Graduation list

Chantelle Lehman writes:
Occupation: RETIRED AND LOVING IT!!!
Bio: After graduation, I went on to American River College to earn an AA degree in Business Administration.  After college, I worked for a year
in Honolulu as a legal secretary and had a wonderful time enjoying the island life.  Then I came back to Sacramento and began working for the
Employment Development Department as a stenographer (gosh, do we even have those anymore?).  I worked there for a long time working my way up to Data Processing Manager, then got recruited by one of the State data centers and worked there for a long time, got recruited by the
Department of General Services, worked my way up to Assistant Chief of the Telecommunications Division, and finally retired in 2004 after 30+
years of service (YES!!!).
I now travel the world with my best friend and husband, Tom.  So far we have been to Mexico many times, Venezuela, Thailand, Panama, India
(during the tsunami!), the Netherlands, Belgium, France (ahhh, Paris!), the United Kingdom, Costa Rica, and Italy.  When we travel, we usually
go for several months in order to really experience a country.  I also squeeze in trips to Kauai with my sister when she's available.  I'm really into photography and take lots of pictures during my travels to capture the memories.
Hobbies: Photography, photography, photography.  I just can't get enough of it and spend lots of enjoyable time in my digital photo lab.
Kids: I chose not to have children and devoted myself to my work career.

Occupation: Self employed salesman. Currently involved with representing various furniture manufacturers to local retailers. Past careers include 7 years as a swimming pool builder/general manager and 15 years as the Califorinia pioneer for Aveda Beauty Products.
Bio: Went from married and struggling to beach bum in San Diego to the careers listed above. Moved to SD in 1970 and got divorced within a year. Enjoyed the life there until business opportunities convinced me to move to Orange County, where I've been since 1986.
Currently living in Huntington Beach and single. Most interesting hobby was a few years of mountain climbing.
Trivia: I've had 3 marriages, 3 divorces with no negative repurcussions from any.
My interests and hobbies have been varied and numerous. To overcome a fear of public speaking I joined and won awards in Toastmasters, Intl.
An interest in running got me to raise funds for a marathon to benefit the Leukemia Society. I seem to have become an expert at starting over and making it work.
Friends: My closest friends were John Achermann and Steve Dietrich. Lost track of both. Many others were fairly close.
Hobbies: Reading, tennis when not injured (too many of those, dammit). I'm an avid jazz and blues buff, passionate about politics and current events.

Favorite_memory: Being a 3 sport letterman (in minor sports), my first love and mind expansion.

SLAYTON Jr., Paul Rodger
Paul drowned on May 3rd at Koki Beach in Hana, Maui due to the effects of a tsunami surge from a 7.9 magnitude earthquake south of Tonga, one
day after celebrating their 25th anniversary, with his beloved wife Tram Slayton. He recently won the battle of superficial bladder cancer after 5 mos. of surgeries and chemos. A 54 year old native of Sacramento, born September 2, 1951, Paul was a graduate of Encina HS, Class of '69 and worked for the State of California for 34 years with plans to retire after recently finishing building his dream home in Nahiku, Maui with his devoted wife.
Paul was a loving husband and treasured father of Shenell and Shalia Slayton and Lisa Johnson. Son of Patsy Slayton; and sisters Carol Wilke,
Kathy Turnipseed, and Laura Garcia. He was also adored by many caring sisters-in-law, friends in Sacramento and Nahiku. He will be deeply missed by all those who had the pleasure to know him and forever held close to our hearts. Preceded in death by father Marlen Davis, and survived by mother, Fern Davis; sister Linda Requa and numerous brothers and sisters in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Larry is perhaps best known by his glass work. Larry founded Artisan Glass Works, an architectural glass manufacturing and design studio in 1972. I am sure that you and others saw the obituary for Larry Davis (69) in the paper today. It hurts to read about his passing. I did not know he was ill. For the past many years our paths crossed periodically as our boys were in the same age group and we live in the same area. It was always a pleasure to see him and visit with him about his son and family and Artisan Glass business. He repaired an antique mirror for a friend of mine at one point. I'm so sorry and wish to send condolences to all who knew him. Jane Larson Smith 69

Driver died on road she worried about
GIRDWOOD: Residents try to limit trips on highway they say "is so dangerous."

By MEGAN HOLLAND
Anchorage Daily News

Published: June 14th, 2005
Last Modified: June 14th, 2005 at 04:06 AM

After traveling thousands of miles from a weeklong holiday with her aging parents in Sacramento, 53-year-old Diane Petrotta Bahnson died about 10 miles from home on a highway she often worried about -- like so many other Girdwood residents.

Girdwood, population 1,800, 35 miles southeast of downtown Anchorage, is a tight-knit community that too often loses people to the only stretch of road that links them to the city, residents say.

That stretch of road -- with its majestic views of Turnagain Arm, whales surfacing in the waters on one side and Dall sheep often holding steady on craggy cliff faces on the other -- can be as scary as it is beautiful. It is one of the most heavily trafficked roads in the state -- and troopers say impatient drivers seem to be speeding on it more and more often.

Bahnson was driving home in her 2001 Subaru Forester about 9:15 p.m. Saturday when she rounded a blind curve and found an oncoming 1984 Chevy Blazer in her lane. She tried to swerve but couldn't evade the Blazer, and the vehicles collided, troopers said.

Timothy Wood, 30, of Anchorage was driving the Blazer. He was recovering at Providence Alaska Medical Center on Monday. He answered the phone near his hospital bed but could barely talk and declined to be interviewed.

Troopers said other drivers told them Wood had been driving erratically for several miles before the accident. Troopers spokesman Greg Wilkinson said Wood's driving pattern right before the accident was consistent with someone who was falling asleep at the wheel. Troopers said he was not drunk and are awaiting results from other tests to determine whether he was otherwise impaired.

Bahnson had lived in Girdwood for more than 20 years, working various jobs at Alyeska Resort. Friends said she was well-liked and known for her sense of humor.

Her husband, Reid Bahnson, an avalanche expert, said his wife drove the Seward Highway about once a week.

"We tried to limit our trips to Anchorage," he said in a telephone interview from his home Monday. "You have to be careful because there are so many crazies out there."

The mood in Girdwood since the accident has been somber, said Vicki Brooks, a manager at Chair 5 restaurant.

"That road is so dangerous," she said. "It's really sad. We are really tired of losing people on that highway."

Brooks said she thinks troopers should watch the road more closely.

"They need more patrols on the highway instead of getting their easy DWIs in this little town," she said. "Quit focusing on us. We know how to get home two blocks."

Girdwood troopers Sgt. William Welch said only two troopers work the roughly 60 miles from McHugh Creek to Hope at any time. There are no troopers assigned to patrolling the highway -- troopers are busy answering calls for Girdwood, or helping out with calls to anywhere along the long stretch of the area they cover, he said.

Welch said troopers try to respond to calls coming in from drivers about worrisome vehicles, but if a car is speeding, the chances of troopers catching up with it are slim.

Welch said people seem to be speeding more since he started working the area more than five years ago. It's not that there are more cars on the road, he said, but that "people seem to be driving worse," and at higher speeds.

Welch said he is concerned about the highway, too: He's a husband, father and grandfather who lives in Girdwood.

"I worry about the highway all the time. My wife travels it," he said. If his family isn't on time coming home to Girdwood, he worries. He makes his loved ones call him when they get off the highway, he said.

Welch said drivers can help make the road safer by just being patient and slowing down. "I want people to arrive alive," Welch said.

Reid Bahnson said he wants to see more money injected into the system to allow the troopers to patrol the highway.

Otherwise, he said, "all it comes down to is a needless waste of human life that's hurt a lot of people."

CRASH ON SPANISH PEAK KILLS SACRAMENTO MAIL PLANE PILOT
A Sacramento express-mail pilot was killed Wednesday when his Cessna 208B hit 6,161-foot Spanish Peak 10 miles north of Reno/Tahoe International Airport. Authorities withheld his name pending notification of relatives. He was the only person on board. "This was his regular run. He was one of the company instructor-pilots. He was very experienced," said a spokeswoman for the Union Flights. "It was express mail: parcels. He was following two of our other aircraft. They landed safely. She and Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Spencer Buxton in Reno said the plane was on an instrument approach to Reno. The company spokeswoman said nothing pointed to mechanical trouble or icing as a cause. She said she suspected it might have happened because the airport's radio glide slope, which provides proper descent angle for instrument landings, was out of service. Buxton said the glide slope has not been working for a week and half, but had nothing to do with the crash. He said the instrument approach in use -- a localizer approach -- is a normal one that specifies minimum descent altitudes. A snowstorm Wednesday cut visibility and hampered rescuers. "It's miserable," Washoe County Sheriff's Department spokesman, Sgt. Geof Wise, said at a search command post on Eagle Canyon Road, four miles west of Pyramid Highway. An estimated 50 deputies, search and rescue and Hasty Team members responded to that area, where a crash-activated emergency locator transmitter signal was heard. The body of the pilot was removed Wednesday afternoon. The FAA reported the plane left Sacramento at about 7:30 AM and was cleared for a Reno landing approach at 8:10 AM. However, the plane disappeared from radar. Searchers with ELT receivers located the wreckage about 1:30 PM.

Reno Gazette-Journal, Friday, March 24, 1995
PILOT IN PLANE CRASH IDENTIFIED
The Washoe County coroner's office has identified the pilot killed Wednesday in a crash north of Sun Valley as Lynn Stover, 43, of Sacramento.
Representatives of the National Transportation Safety Board, Federal Aviation Administration, and manufacturers of the Cessna 208B and its
turbine engine inspected the wreckage Thursday on 6,161-foot Spanish Peak. Because of heavy snow, they had to use a snowcat to get there, an FAA spokesman said. No evidence was released as to the crash cause. The plane operated by Union Flights of Sacramento was carrying express
mail from Sacramento to Reno/Tahoe International Airport. Stover was alone as the single-engine plane approached at about 8:30 AM to land at the Reno airport during a snow storm. He took off from Sacramento at 7:35 AM and at 8:10 AM was cleared to land in Reno.

Mary Gwendolyn (Gwen or Gwennee) Levings Robbins , age 49, of Boise, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, June 30, 2001. She was a wife, mother, sister, daughter and a grandmother. Memorial services will be held at Foothills Christian Church, 9655 W. State St, Boise, at 3 p.m. Come and join us in celebrating Gwen's life and memories. Arrangements are under the direction of Riverside Funeral Service & Crematory, Boise. Gwen was born in Cottage Grove, Ore., on August 6, 1951. She was born to Frank and Mary Levings. She loved the Oregon coast, walking along the beach and flying kites. She spent a lot of time camping with her husband and enjoyed the outdoors tremendously. Gwen also enjoyed reading mysteries, cross-stitching and collecting frogs and cats. But, what gave her the most pleasure and joy in life was spending time with her family. Her face would light up at the sight of her grandchildren. She would spend hours playing with them- pushing them on the swing, jumping on the trampoline, playing cars and legos or simply laughing with them. She was the best Grandma a child could have. She was always generous with her time and energy! Gwen was part of a group at church, where she had close friends and looked forward to their time together weekly. She also adored her little dog, Chester. Gwen is survived by her loving and adoring family. Her husband, Oscar; her daughter and son-in-law,Julie and Art Tibbetts; her son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Stephanie McLaughlin; her brothers, Frank Levings, George Levings; and her father, Frank Levings; her grandchildren, Christian Tibbetts, Aidan Tibbetts, Jordan McLaughlin, and Broden Tibbetts. Dear Gwen, How we will miss your love and your smile. Your beautiful eyes and your boisterous chuckle and how you ran and laughed and played like a child. You have meant the world to your family and will never be forgotten. You always made your Grandchildren feel so extra special and they always missed you when you were gone. You have touched all of our lives and we will have a hole in our hearts where you belong. We know you are with the Lord now, so we are not worried, but we are sad for us. Give your mom a hug for us. Save us a spot and smile for us in Heaven- God will like that. Your will be dearly missed. We love you and are comforted in the knowledge of knowing that you are with our loving God. All our love, Your Family.

Shutgun Ambush Kills Sacramento Man, 24
A 24-year-old man with a history of minor drug violations was shot to death yesterday afternoon in a Sacramento apartment complex by a man who allegedly laid in wait for him with a shotgun.
Police said David B. Hamilton was slain shortly after he walked into the Westbridge student housing complex, 1025 University Ave., with his girlfriend and her brother. Detective Donald Steed said a single blast from a .410 gauge shotgun "blew him (Hamilton) over a chair, and everyone else just took off."
Witnesses said William Lambert, 30, who reportedly held a grudge against the victim because of Hamilton's reported white supremacist views, had arrived at the complex earlier with the shotgun hidden in a sleeping bag. According to witnesses, Lambert waited in a nearby room until Hamilton arrived about 2:15 PM in Building No. 5 of the complex near California State
University, Sacramento.
He died almost instantly of a chest wound.
Then, witnesses said, Lambert put the shotgun back into the sleeping bag, walked out of the complex, climbed onto his motorcycle and drove away as police were being called.
The police, informed that Lambert lived in an apartment complex at 545 Santiago Ave. in North Sacramento, dispatched several patrol cars to that address.   As Lambert arrived home, he was met by probationary patrol officer Diane Ramsey, the first police officer on the scene. Her service revolver drawn, she disarmed the suspect and had arrested him by the time assisting
officers arrived.
Neither Lambert nor Hamilton, an unemployed man who detectives said had lived "off and on" in the Westbridge complex, were students at the university.

Occupation: Retired/ now homemaker
Bio: For any of you who might remember me, I was the girl with the wet hair and blood-shot chlorinated eyes from all my hundreds of hours looking at the bottom of the swimming pool, while a member of the Arden Hills swim team.
After competing in the Los Angeles Olympic Trials in swimming in 1968 (and not
making the team), I went on to compete in the World Student Games, held in Torino, Italy in 1969, and I won a gold medal in the 400M freestyle for the U.S.
After that, I earned my Secondary Teaching credential at Sac State and substituted in the San Juan and Elk Grove school districts for about four years.
I married and then divorced during that time. Finding that teaching was not exactly a promising career for me, I struck out in finding something different.
After a number of part time jobs, I wound up with a job at Sutter General Hospital (the old building) in the admissions department and worked my way up to manager of Business Services (with an interim period of Director of Business Services in 1998).
OK,everyone.  I have to say, I married a "computer nerd" in 1982. We have no children and live in Granite Bay, close to Folsom Lake.  Life is wonderful.
I retired last January after 20 years of service with that organization and now am really enjoying life.
Hey, guys, I'm RETIRED! How, many of you can say that?
Hobbies: I love jogging and biking around Folsom Lake.  My husband and I have an extensive collection of fine red wines, that we have gathered over the years.  We have two wine cellars.  Between the two, we can store over 2,000 bottles of wine!   Now, that's alot of wine....the fun part is drinking it!
Kids: We love not having any.

He gained our respect and we worked hard for our grades in his class of physiology.  He was one of the reasons I went in to teaching. He showed compassion for his subject and passed it on to his students.  He took the time to consol me when my mother died. He will remain in my memory forever.
Elise Wolz:  She was the greatest German teacher anyone could have.  She loved her students so much and it was quite evident.  I remember her bringing special Kleenex's (extra large) to class for Mr. Jenkins, because whenever he would sneeze, the volume would blow the classroom away!  She made German fun and everyone loved her.

Occupation: self employed artist, organic farmer
Bio: I graduated from UC Irvine with a double BA (art and Psychology) in 1973.  It was here I met my husband, in the UC ceramic lab. I spent one year working on a double masters(also art/psychology), but halfway into it decided I could not handle one more day of school nor one more day of southern California.  I spent the next 8 months traveling through the Rockies with the goal of skiing every ski mountain in Colorado, Wyoming and Idaho. Having done this, I applied to the Peace Corps, but was not accepted for lack of any practical skills to offer.  Then I applied to work (volunteer) for Greenpeace in Seattle, hoping for a place on one of the boats.  At that time they did not allow women on the boats.  So I moved to Davis and aquired a degree in Veterinary nursing, and became a mother.  My son's father remained in So. Cal to finish his graduate degree, so I raised my son as a single parent his first 5 years.
I moved to Santa Cruz in 1978 to live and study Midwifery at a femine arts school here. Soon afterI began apprenticing, I became the mother of my second child, Kona, in 1980. Bing, the father of all 6 of my children and my husband of 20 years, moved to Santa Cruz before her birth. We bought our first home and set up our own art studio.  We have been making our living at painting, sculpture, and ceramics ever sense.  We bought a 75 acre ranch in the Santa Cruz mountains in 1984.  My son and I have just completed planting 500 new apple trees to replenish the orchards already existing. I also have about 100 specialty trees to supply local organic markets.  I spent some time in the 80's raising Arabian horses and my daughter is still an avid horsewoman. At the age of 12 she trained her own Arabian, and used this horse in endurance rides as well as horse shows. I was a cub scout den leader in the early 80's, a 4-h dairy goat project leader for 7 years, an art teacher at the local elementary school, on the school board and a soccer mom for many years.
Trivia:   I think I covered a lot of trivia in previous statement.  Some of our famous clients are, Jesse Jackson, Bill Walsh, Merve Griffon, Sen. Frank Cooper, and the Queen of Arabia.
Friends:  My best friends were Faye Wales (who moved down to Irvine with me in 1971,but we soon parted ways and I have lost contact with her except for what I learned at the 20 year reunion), also Linda Shepherd, who last I heard was a teacher in Susanville (10 years ago), Sheri Wolters, who ten years ago was single and living in Santa Monica, Judy Wicks who worked as an airline attendent and was living in Chico, Christy Cole who was teaching in Eugene, Oregon.  I have not kept in contact with my high school friends after graduating from college.
Hobbies:   My whole family and I are into water sports and skiing, travel and mountain biking.  We spend one month every December in southern or central Mexico surfing and skin diving and canoeing. We have canoed the everglades extensively, and camped and traveled to every state several times. Horses and gardening and building houses. Replanting the forest (my husband and I have planted 9,000 redwood trees on our property) My six kids and one grandchild keep me so busy with their hobbies, I have little time for my own.  But I have fun with them.
Kids: Caleb born in 1975, attended UCSC on a full academic scholarship,is now a writer and organic farmer with one son, Jimi.  Kona, born 1980, is now a sophmore at UC Berkely, also on an academic scholorship, and made High Honors her first year. She leaves for Ghana, Africa this summer for a full years study abroad at the University of Ghana.   She hopes to become a photo journalist, she is currently a religious studies/English major with a focus on how religions have, and do, affect womens position and treatment in their cultures. She is the girl who grew up on the back of a horse, who would ride bareback through the mountains, sometimes up to 50 miles in a day, bareback, chasing wild boar, coyote, fox and even cougars.  She was and still is a wild woman. Kyla was born in 1982, is graduating from high school this year(2000) and has at this date not decided between the Academy of Art in San Francisco, Otis Art institute or Cal State Long Beach Art Dept. She is beautiful and talented and the complete opposite of her wild sister. Forrest, born 1985, is an athlete. He plays high school water polo, High school soccer, high school swim team, surfs almost every day, and was chosen for the olympic developement team for northern california(soccer). He plays class one soccer for Santa Cruz County and thinks he might like to pursue a career as a forester. Jade, born 1989, is currently being homeschooled by me and we love it.  I will keep her in home school at least until junior high. Rousseau, born 1994 is close friends with his nephew, my grandson,Jimi, who was born in 1997. The last 5 children were born at home.
Grade_school: I attended Coloma school in downtown Sacto.
Junior_high:  Jonas Salk
Junior_ high_friends: Kathy Miller  and Gail Bogovich.  I think I heard Kathy is a nurse.  No word on Gail.
Memorable_teachers: Joe Pattituci was a positive and encouraging art teacher, Gary Pruner and Mr. Foster were independent characters who were memorable, but not for being good teachers. Mr. Coke was everybodies pal, I adored him. Mr. Tracey and his teaching partner Mr. Lee? were great! I still use them as examples of great team teaching in our district. Mr. Huber was the worst teacher of my entire school career and is the inspiration for all the work I have put on hiring committees and school boards here to protect our kids from this kind of person.
Favorite_memory: Many great memories from Encina: first love, Tom Morrissey, second love Jerry Glazebrook. Wonderful freindships and adventures . On 9 Febuary 1998, while I was on my way to work, there was an accident on south bound 99, in which a large deleivery truck struck a Chevy Blazer and both vehicles were engulfed in flames. When I had stop to help, there were two men carrying a woman over the middle divider. I went to help them, and one man told me a baby was still inside the Blazer. I had to jump over the divider and I had to go all the way into the Blazer, and the 7 month old baby was in the back on the passenger side. I had problems getting the back of the seat to sit upright, as it had come down on the baby. Once I got the car seatbelt undone, I handed the baby out of a broken window, to the man that helped the husband pull out the wife.  Within a matter of a few seconds after I got out and back over the divider, flames had completely engulfed the rear of the Blazer, where myself and the baby had been. I have since been recognized by the Calif. State Assembly, received the Hero on the Month award from KRAK radio, received an award from the Sacramento Mayor and the City Council membera, received a  Certificate of Valor from the Sacramento Fire Department, been recognized by the Sutterville and Sacramento Optimus Clubs, received the Army Commander's Award for Humanitarian Service (from the Army Corps of Engineers), and am presently waiting to hear from the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission in Pittsburgh, PA. I recently e-mail them to find out when I could expect to hear from them in awarding me their award, as I have had friends and family members asking me if I have heard from them yet, and this is the answer I received back from them, "While you are to be commended for giving of yourself at a time when your help was needed, the Commission has elected not to proceed with an award in your case inasmuch as it did not meet the requirements of the fund". I have read about many of the past and present awardees in their web site http://trfn.clpgh.org/carnegiehero/(and what they did and none them were any different from what I did and I am very disappointed in their answer. I was also interviewed by the CHP for a possible award from them about six months ago, they can't seem to find all the witnesses, and the ones they did talk to don't remember much as a year has already past by, if they had done this right after the accident more people would have remembered all of the details!! For me, I will never forget that day, as long as I live!! I can still remember the sounds and smell of the two burning vehicles, the intensed heat from the fire!! I still have nightmares about that day!! The story was in the Feburary 10th issue, and can be found at the Sacramento Bee web site http://www.sacbee.com/news/beetoday/newsroom/local/021098/local10.html.

I have also served in the US Air Force Reserves from July 1981 and will retire on 12 October 1998, after a total combined years of active duty and Reserves of about 26 years of military service and will retire at the rank of Master Sergent. I also presetly work part-time at CompUSA (formly Computer City) on Alta Arden Expressway.
