Thursday, November 18, 1999 10:14 AM Encina Update (homecoming vide/clothing/2000/93/sponsors/siblings/search/carsdirect.com/privacy/store/whats new/stanford) ENCINA ALUMNI, This week's update is sponsored by Steve Palmer 74, the first alumni to make a monetary contribution towards the expenses incurred by the Encina website. HOMECOMING VIDEO Terri Jurich 74 wrote that she'll share her pictures with everyone. I received the EBS homecoming video from teacher Stephanie Woo. I'll be adding video clips from Stephanie Woo and Kerry Shearer 72's video when I have time. Stephanie's students got some good alumni interviews that I think you will enjoy. HOMECOMING CLOTHING Lorna reports that she hasn't received payment from some of you for your orders. Please send Lorna your check ASAP. If you have questions please contact Lorna at lgragg@ciwmb.ca.gov . Send checks to: Lorna Gragg 117 Breckenwood Way Sacramento, CA 95864 I appreciate those of you who took the time and trouble to send additional checks to cover the shipping costs we forgot about in pricing the alumni clothing. If you've been intending to do this and haven't gotten around to it, send your check for 10% of the original check to: Harlan Lau 2764 Doverton Square Mountain View, CA 94040 If you're sending a check to Lorna, just include the 10% shipping cost. No need to send a separate check to me. HOMECOMING 2000 I asked Principal Myrtle Berry whether she knew when the next homecoming game would be. They do not have a date yet and it won't be decided until next Spring. I thought that those of you planning reunions next year would like to know this. CLASS OF 93 Class president Laura Bui has volunteered to organize the 10 year reunion in 2003. Please contact Laura (htbui@ucdavis.edu) if you are interested in the 10 year reunion. SPONSORS I would like to thank Jeff Copley 72 and Steve Palmer 74 for their monetary contributions to the Encina website. I have added a Sponsors page to the website where I list those who have contributed. Each week I'll dedicate the Update to a sponsor. Other sponsors include the Class of 73 reunion committee and of course, Will Leaver 73/74, whose ISP ConnectCorp hosts the Encina website. And of course, I appreciate those of you who take the time to link to the Encina store when buying from amazon.com, eToys, etc. SIBLINGS Lequita Taylor 69 wrote: Shirley Taylor 65 Barbara Taylor 66 James Taylor 68 Lequita Taylor 69 David Taylor 74 William Taylor 78 Kelly Murphy 79 (half sister) Another Hall of Fame family with seven siblings! CARSDIRECT.COM A while back I asked whether anyone had any experience using the internet to buy a car. I appreciate the recommendations a few of you sent me. There are quite a few services like Autobytel.com, which basically refer you to a dealer, who then contacts you with a price quote. I found this frustrating, because you cannot determine the price online and you still have to deal with a car salesperson. However, there is at least one service, carsdirect.com, which shows you the price quote online. You configure the car you want with the options you want. carsdirect shows you the MSRP and your cost in real time. If you decide to buy the car, you put down a $250 deposit and they will deliver the car to your door. This is the way cars should be sold! Try it out. Highly recommended. For those of you who follow college football, Stanford will go to the Rose Bowl for the first time in many many years if they can just squeeze by Cal, who has the chance to play the spoiler and ruin Stanford's season. Stanford hasn't been to the Rose Bowl since Jan 1, 1972, when the team was still known as the Indians. Kind of funny, going from the Apaches to the Indians and having both schools change their names. At least Encina has the Bulldogs now, all Stanford has is a color, Cardinal. This game has been made even more controversial as the athletic department has decreed that the fun-loving Stanford band cannot make fun of Cal in any way. All because of a few "incidents" in the past. Anyone else going to the game??? We'll be in the end zone. Hope it doesn't rain... Go Stanford!
