If you plan to go, I hope you are as excited as I am... We have over 150 RSVPs now, not including spouses and family! With Myrtle Berry's invitation to participate in the half-time activities, this promises to be a memorable homecoming game! Call up those maybes and classmates and tell them to BE THERE! Note, I'm taking Friday off so don't send email to harlan@rambus.com . Please use encina@encinahighschool.com tonight and the remainder of the weekend. CLASS OF 74 Class webmaster Steve Palmer has published some of the pictures taken at the 25 year reunion, including a Quicktime VR panorama of everyone. Checkout the 74 homepage! The initial collection is just those digital pictures Steve and I took and does not include any "real" pictures. Steve requests that anyone who took pictures to please send him copies if they would like to share them with other 74 alumni. HOMECOMING RALLY Event: Homecoming rally Date: October 22, 1999 Time: 11:00am Where: Encina We have been invited to the student's homecoming rally at Friday at 11am at Encina. Stafford Boyd has invited attending alumni to be guest judges! Hopefully we will encourage more students to attend the homecoming game. Stafford Boyd 88 wrote: "We would love for you all to be judges at the rally...just so you can have good seats and really check out what it is to be a Bulldog. I will have escorts for all those attending at the front office from 10:30-10:50. The office is loctaed just to the right of the flag pole.....just walk past the pole and into the doors on the right. Wow, what a weekend it's going to be!!!!" Please RSVP for the rally if you intend to go so your pass will be ready in advance. After the rally I thought it might be nostalgic to have lunch in the cafeteria with the students! RSVPs for the rally so far: Harlan Lau 73 Rett Smart 73 Steve Palmer 74 Kelly Horine 88 John Nunez 74 Nancy Cooper Manly (maybe) Kathleen Ketcherside Arceo 73 (maybe) Terri Ferreira Scoggins 79 (maybe) In addition, Steve Palmer 74 and I have made arrangements with principal Myrtle Berry and teacher Stephanie Woo to work with her EBS students and take a number of Quicktime VR (virtual reality) panomramas of the Encina campus, the homecoming rally and some of the classrooms for the website. We will be staying after the rally to work with Stephanie's students, introducing them to the world of virtual reality. If you come for the rally, feel free to hang around with us and meet the students. PREGAME HOMECOMING PARTY Event: Homecoming 99 Alumni Party Date: October 22, 1999 Time: 5:00 - 7:00 pm Where: Candlerock Lounge and Sportsbar 2600 Watt Ave Sacramento, CA 95821 916-483-4188 Look for the big Encina Alumni sign and get your nametags there. Details: The Candlerock has graciously agreed to letting us hold our tailgate and post parties in the Lounge. BRING YOUR LETTER SWEATER, LETTER JACKET OR EVEN YOUR GYM SHIRT to the "ROCK" prior to the game. HOMECOMING TAILGATE PARTY - The food will be pot luck. Please be sure to bring something to munch on such as a pizza, kfc wings, potstickers, chips and salsa, those little cocktail weenies or whatever else you feel like bringing. There is a snack bar on site but we want to make sure that we eat something before the game. The Candlerock has agreed to the pot luck as long as we don't bring in beverages. I expect to have quite a crowd. But Lorna says the Candlerock bar can accomodate 100 and we can overflow into the bowling alley. Some of you may be bringing your children to the pregame party and I don't see any problem. Lorna wrote that the Candlerock has glow in the dark bowling from 330 to 530. They also have Laser tag. Lorna Cline 72/73 will be distributing Encina alumni clothing at the pregame party. Kate Grebitus 75 will be set up to do facepaint/bodypaint those who are so inclined, with appropriate Encina decorations: "I was just thinking about Friday nite...and a bit of creativity jumped out of the old art school brain cells...I have been doing face painting (kids in the hospital) also known as tatoos on the high school grad nites for the past ten years... Do you think anyone would want a bit of Apache war paint...as in... Block "E" or feathers, Encina Alumni...painted on a cheek, arm or other parts? It will be done with theatrical water based make-up that is hypo-allergenic...it takes just a few seconds to do..." Thanks for volunteering Kate! Jeff Frei 75 will lead us in practicing the Apache Fight Song: "Encina High Fight Song Apache Braves fight for Encina High, We have the will to win, it's do or die! For we are all behind you, lead the way, So come on boys let's win that game today! (Rah,Rah) We'll sweep the other team right off their feet, Show them the Apache spirit can't be beat! As gold and cardinal banners proudly fly, Cheer for Encina High!" Janice Barnes 89 will have copies of the fight song for everyone. Steve Palmer 74 and I will head over to the Candlerock after finishing up at Encina and will probably be there pretty early. Maybe even 3 or 4. Come by and say hello before things get frantic. I would like to meet the faces behind all this email I get. Thank you to all who volunteered to help with nametags, clothing, taking pictures, video and such. We will filter out to the game about 6:30 and return to the Candlerock after the game for the postgame party. That's only an hour and a half for the pregame party, not much time at all. HOMECOMING GAME Event: Encina homecoming game Opponent: Golden Sierra Time: JV 5:30pm Varsity 7:00pm Where: El Camino HS Cost: $5-7 per adult (not sure) As 7:00 approaches, we will move our party from the Candlerock to the El Camino stadium for the clash between Encina and Golden Sierra. Stafford Boyd says we will have our own Encina Alumni section so look for it. We want to have a sea of cardinal and gold in the stands. For those who do not attend the pregame party, Lorna Cline will "drag" the undistributed alumni clothing to the game. Please try and pick up your order at the pregame party if you can. For those who wrote that they are not into football and will only be attending the pregame party, I encourage you to attend the homecoming game, if only to see the alumni in the homecoming parade. Besides, I think the entire game will end up being one long party anyway. You may not even notice there's a football game going on, except when we do our cheers and the fight song and Encina scores! I will share a little secret with you. To the best of my recollection, I attended one football game, homecoming my senior year! I was quite the nerd in high school. So it's quite exciting for me to help Rett organize an event like this. I never worked on a float either and I'm looking forward to doing so next year! HOMECOMING PARADE I contacted Encina principal Myrtle Berry and she has invited Encina alumni to participate in the half-time activities. We will have five vehicles in the homecoming parade at half-time! This past weekend, Kelly Horine 88 along with alumni Amy Francis 88, Paul Stewart 76 and crew, decorated Kelly's VW convertible: "There were seven people at the car decorating....We all put our handprint on the back with our graduation year. We also got it on film, the car looks great." While we didn't have enough time to field a float this year, we have several volunteers to work on the float next year for Homecoming 2000. Artist Paul Stewart 76 has volunteered to lead the float effort next year. I have made large cardoor-sized banners for the doors of the Encina alumni vehicles which we can attach before the parade. The current plan (subject to change) for the alumni cars is: 60s car: driver Linda Weatherford Ballance 62 with passengers representing Encina's first class: John Russell 61 - wrestling, track, football team, reunion committee. John was voted Mr Apache on the first Encina Apache day. Carol Mills Russell 61 - reunion committee Joan Seitz Barrett 61 - Junior prom queen, reunion committee, reporter for the Encina Tomahawk newspaper David Haynes 61 - reunion committee 70s car: driver Kim Culver 76 - son attends Golden Sierra! Kerry Shearer 72 - webmaster for the FIRST Encina website for the class of 72 reunion two years ago. His efforts inspired the current Encina website. Bob Goosmann 74 - chaired the 74 reunion this year Steve Palmer 74 - 74 reunion committee, 74 webmaster 80s car: driver Kelly Horine 88 - chaired 88's reunion last year Amy Francis 88 - cheerleader, decorated car Sue Thurman Solia 88 - her boyfriend fixed Kelly's car! Janice Barnes 89 - chaired 89 reunion this year Michelle Amyot 89 - 89 reunion this year Class of 73 car: driver Chester Gragg Lorna Cline Gragg 72/73 - alumni clothing organizer Rett Smart 73 - originator of the homecoming party idea! Harlan Lau 73 - homecoming co-organizer, Encina webmaster Class of 75 car: driver Greg Grant 75 Jeff Frei 75 - will lead Apache Fight Song Jack Dieterle 75 - all the way from San Diego Val Robichaud 75 We are working with Stafford Boyd 88, alumni and teacher and activities supervisor. Stafford wrote: "The alum procession will be at the beginning of the parade. Each car will stop in front of the stands--alumni will have own section--and I (announcer) will announce meaning of car and have representative alumni stand. When all cars are finally stopped in front of the alumni section, alumni will proceed to sing Fight Song when prompted by me (announcer). Floats and royalty will follow. As you can see, I will be announcing the halftime activities, so anything you'd like to include, let me know....I've already have great ideas." Jeff Frei 75 will be leading the Apache Fight Song. Janice Barnes 89 has volunteered to print up 150 copies for distribution at the pregame party and the game for those who haven't memorized the words. I'm sorry there's no 90s car, but we didn't have any alumni from the 90s who volunteered a car this year. And the classes with the most RSVPs were 73 and 75. In case you're wondering about the passenger selection, I take responsibility. I asked those I thought would be good representatives of the Encina alumni. The Encina students were short on convertibles for the parade. Debbie Skalisky 73 and Lad Wentzel 76 have volunteered to drive Encina royalty in the homecoming parade and since the alumni are first in the parade, we may be able to help out the students by taking a second pass around the track if needed. Debbie has a red 82 BMW cabriolet and Lad has a red 65 Mustang convertible! Rett, calm down, you can ride in Lad's Mustang next year... POSTGAME PARTY Event: Postgame party Where: Candlerock Lounge After the Homecoming game, those who are interested will return to the Candlerock for more socializing. Lorna Cline 72/73 wrote: "You might want to send a heads up to all the alumni that are planning to return to the Candlerock after the game. At 9:30 p.m. if you walk through any of the 3 doors into the bowling alley you will have to pay a cover charge. That cover charge will be applied to a bowling game or whatever. BUT, if we just go back to talk, (or drink) then go in through the Candlerock door. That is the only door where we won't be charged. (Side of building by Tower Books)." So don't forget to use the Candlerock door by Tower Books! HOMECOMING RSVPS Any last minute RSVPs? Send them today. I will be printing up nametags tonight. Please email me at encina@encinahighschool.com . 1. Homecoming rally Friday morning (name, year): 2. Encina alumni lunch (tentative. maybe at Applebee's if they have the Encina decorations up): 2. They are in dire need of funds for items such as varsity and JV letters, sport insignias, ribbons, trophies, etc. I have been supported in the effort by Harlan and so far we have raised $200. Any excess donations can be used due to funding cuts to sports from a district level. GIVE A LITTLE BACK TO THE KIDS I will collect CHECKS at the Candlerock that will be tallied and presented to the Athletic Dept. at the Game. Checks should be made to: Encina High School Memo: Athletic Department Donation" HOMECOMING MAIL Lance Ballance 85 wrote: "I'm going to try VERY hard to make it. It depends on my being able to catch an afternoon flight out of LA. I am on the air until 2:00pm at KBIG, and from there, am only 20 minutes from Burbank Airport. If I can find a flight in time, I will try to make it. " Lance Ballance 85 is one of Linda Weatherford Ballance 62's four sons who will be attending the party! I would like to extend my appreciation to those spirited folks who spread the word about the homecoming party. For example, Kate Grebitus 75 wrote: "Hi Harlan Sue Stegenga 75 has been calling around and those people have been calling me because I have the computer and they don't (?)...anyway... Please have any interested volunteers contact me at (916) 363-5600." HOMECOMING PHOTOS I'm going to try and get each class to stand still for a group picture sometime during the evening. If someone from each class could bring their yearbook to hold up in the group picture that would be great. Plus it'll be fun to look at the yearbook pictures with classmates. I will try and circulate as much as I can as I would like to put some faces on all the email I have exchanged with you all. Please make a point of coming by and introducing yourself at the party or game! I will be taking as many group pictures as I can for the website. HOMECOMING NAMETAGS I'm going to print up nametags for those who RSVP. They'll have the same Encina Alumni emblem as the homecoming clothes along with Homecoming 99 or something to that effect. This will be cool keepsakes to remember the evening. To show that you were at the Encina Homecoming 99 party! Spouses/significant others will have to make do with handwritten nametags. Those who DO NOT RSVP will also have to make do with plain, handwritten nametags. Cool or uncool, it's up to you... HOMECOMING CLOTHES Thanks to all of you who ordered Encina Alumni clothing. The deadline for ordering was noon Monday, October 18th. Lorna wrote that alumni purchased about $840 worth of clothing! And special thanks to Lorna Cline 72/73, for handling the paperwork and David Knepprath 74, for printing up the shirts and giving his fellow alumni a good deal. Clothing will be distributed on Friday at the pregame party or game unless you have made other arrangements with Lorna. HOMECOMING FLOAT Jinne Webb Horger 90 wrote: "Next year i can help construct a float for the parade or decorate the alumni section at the rally. I loved doing those things in high school." Paul Stewart 76 wrote: "If possible I'd like to be in charge of next year's alumni float. I've talked to some friends from my era who love the idea of helping me build something special." Let me know if you would be interesting in working on the Homecoming 2000 float next year. Hey, if there's enough interest we could do a 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s float! HOMECOMING VISITORS Kelly Horine 88 wrote: "I would also like to extend the invitaion to pick up people from the airport or for anyone who needs a place to stay we have two e xtra beds this weekend :)" BUSINESS CARDS Lorna Cline 72/73 has made up business cards with the website address. She's be handing them out to alumni to give to other alumni who don't know about the Encina website. ENCINA ALUMNI ASSOCIATION Stafford Boyd 88 has proposed the formation of a non-profit Encina Alumni Organization. I know we discussed this a while back and several people pointed out some of the problems with setting up a non-profit (government paperwork, costs, board). Please write if you have the knowledge and time to help set up an Encina Alumni Organization. With the number of alumni we are in contact now, we may have the critical mass to fund and staff such an effort.
