My oldest is in third grade and the youngest is starting kindergarten. It sure seems like summers were longer when I was a kid. School gets out later and starts earlier now. We went to Sacramento and stayed with my wife's cousin in Granite Bay. I'm amazed at how much Sacramento has grown. What was the population of the Sacramento back in the early 60s? 250,000? And what is it now if you include all the connected cities like Roseville? Friday we all went to the State Fair. I'm no longer used to Sacramento's scorching summers but the kids enjoyed the rides. It must be about 15-20 degrees cooler in the Bay Area. Saturday we went rafting down the American River between Sunrise and Watt Ave. This was the first time for my boys and we all had a great time. I haven't rafted since the onset of the industrial strength "stream machine" squirt guns. These made the time pass quickly as we drifted slowly downstream having continuous battles with ourselves and other rafters. The highlight was the San Juan rapids. On our third or fourth pass through the rapids in a small raft, everyone fell out except my 5 year old son (I attribute this to overconfidence as we were waving to my wife who was taking a picture). Thank goodness for life jackets. REUNIONS Last weekend was the class of 1989's 10th reunion. See below for details. The next reunions are on September 25, for the classes of 1974 and 1979. If you have siblings or friends who might not know about their class reunions, please pass along this information. The classes which plan to have reunions this year are: 1964 1969 Saturday, August 21, 1999 at Ancil Hoffman Park Alan Dankman (adankman@worldnet.att.net) 1973 Mini-reunion: August 21, 1999 Rett Smart (irsmart@ix.netcom.com) 1974 Saturday, Sept 25, 1999 at Sacramento Red Lion Inn Bob Goosmann (Magusbob@hotmail.com) 1979 Saturday, Sept 25, 1999 at Hilton off Arden Way Laura Graff Allred (pacwest@foothill.net) Great Reunions: info@greatreunions.com 1984 1989 Saturday, August 28, 1999 at Howe Park Center Janice Barnes (jabarnes@dttus.com) 1994 Candy Mleczko (candym229@hotmail.com) CLASS OF 1974 Class webmaster Steve Palmer has put his new spiffy pages on line. The Class of 74 is getting geared up for their reunion this month. Check it out! BIOS Linda Barber 74 wrote: "Hi Harlan. I cannot figure out how to get to where I can read everybody's bio's. I found one page, but it only had about 5 or 6 on it. Is that it? Please help with whatever info you can share. Thanks. Linda Hammock (Barber)" Linda, what can I say about the class of 74? I have 61 folks on the 74 email list, of which 42 have joined the encina1974 mailing list. Yet there are only 13 bios on the 74 homepage... Either these folks are shy (giving them the benefit of the doubt), lead boring lives, or just haven't gotten around to submitting their bios . Come on 74, share your bios with your fellow classmates and tell them what you've been up to the past 25 years! You folks on the reunion committee, get things started. This goes for the class of 79 too, which has only 10 bios! Remember, the class of 73 has over 100 bios on their homepage. CONTACT INFO If you have moved, changed phone numbers, etc, please update your contact info so that we don't lose track of you. CLASS OF 1969 REUNION Michael Brown 69 wrote: "Just want to say that it was really good to see some of the old gang from school. There were some that, did not come that, I would have loved to have seen again. But, enjoyed myself and talking to the ones that did show up. I brought my 2 daughters and they did have some fun and made new friends with other kids that were there at the reunion. It was good to see Chuck and Leslie Dunn, Chuck was his normal crazy self, the only thing that changed about him was a few more winkles and some gray hairs. It was also good to see Howard "The Brain" Teng, again and all of the other people that showed up. I am waiting to see the pictures that Kent took so that I can download them and put them on CD!! It was good to see the ones I knew quite well during our years there at Encina and even the ones I did not know that well. I would like to see our 35th done the same way, but with more advanced planning, hopefully we can attract more of our classmates to show up. I do thank Alan and the others that brought food for the occasion as it was very, very good tasty and there was a good variety of food and munches." CLASS OF 1989 REUNION Janice Barnes 89 wrote: "The reunion went well. I think all that attended had a good time. I did. Everyone looked great and seemed to be doing very well. We had three pregnant ladies; Sophia, Shar, and Alissa. Brian Knoff traveled all the way from Maryland, and Carolyn Jefferson traveled from Omaha, Nebraska where she is a T.V. news reporter. Renee Alstatt Hernandez supplied the wine or as it was called "The Party in a Box." Renee wasn't able to attend, she needed to stay with her children, who are quite lovely I might add. You were missed. I would like to thank Peggy Crans Aldridge, Ann Marie Hovie, Renee Alstatt Hernandez, Patricia Amyot, Joanne Herrera Baumert, The DJ, Patricia and Stephanie Dunn and all the others that offered a hand in the preparation and clean up. I wanted to say a special thanks to Michelle Amyot (There, I spelled your name correctly.) Truly, the reunion could not have happened without you. You were extremely supportive, flexible and diligent in your efforts. Thanks Michelle!!!!!! Way to go Baby!!! See you all in another 5 years. Or sooner. I'll write more later and have the film developed. If anyone would like to send me a copy of their pictures I would more than happy to pay you for them. Take care of yourselves!!" Danni Horn 89 wrote: "Wade Heiman and I went to the reunion together and we had a good time. Most of the people looked the exact same.. Leslie Gier and Charlie Dodd looked so different I would not have known who they were had it not been for there name tags. I didnt get a chance to talk to Robert Tice .. although I saw him and had wanted to talk. I got a kick out of bieng voted most likely to still be living at home in 10 years. I laughed because I know what really happened.. I moved out Oct 10th of 1989, I have been back a few times for visits but never for to long. The turn out was good and the people friendly." Ed Shaffer 89 wrote: "I was very happy to see everyone (no cliques) sharing their lives with everybody else. I am proud to say our class turned out pretty damn good!" Vanessa Richey 89 wrote: "I had a wonderful time at the reunion. It was so good to see everyone. I hope we can all try to stay in touch. If not I hope to see everyone again at the next reunion. I can honestly say that I am so proud to have gone to school with such wonderful people. I would also like to thank Janice Barnes for doing such a wonderful job at putting everything together, because without her we wouldn't have had this reunion. Hope to hear from all of you soon." Peggy Crans 89 wrote: "Hello Ed! Who else is on this list?? I think the reunion was a success also! 10 years sure is a long time -- I think we had a good crowd. To all the Alumni, where will you be 10 years from now?? Interesting thought! Thank you to everyone who helped out with the reunion!" Deb McNevin 89 wrote: "I have to admit I arrived at about 8:30, we were nearly the last to get there and truthfully one of the first to leave about 20 minutes later. It was nice to see all the faces that I did see, and quite a few look the same. There were a few I had to read the names on more than once to believe! But I did not say hello to more than two people there. I am not going to turn this into my personal forum to spew garbage, but I just wanted to say that the reunion mostly made me realize how much I truly regret closing off all my ties to people I liked talking to, and NOT breaking ties with people who apparently were never really my friends. I wish I had stayed to talk to everyone, but Todd and I were getting a little clausterphobic with all of the people. I'm embarrassed to say it, but we don't get out much at all anymore with 3 kids! Anyway I did look at all the pictures and read the list of most likely etc and have a good laugh!" Shannon Bice 89 wrote: "The reunion was a blast, I loved seeing everyone. Everybody looked so good. Janice and Michelle...great job! (it definitely was hard work for you!) Hope that we have a 15 year! It is nice to know that we still have really great people in our class. If anyone is up for a 15 year, please give feedback to the egroups address. Janice what do you think? Shannon Bice-Leigon (I would love to help in any way possible.)" I was told that this came on very quickly and that Sarah is stable and Laura is with her. We were told that when Laura was asked what we could do to help she said to please sign your donor card and give blood in her daughter's name. I thought this might be a good vehicle for delivering the message. I have spent time with Laura and know her to be a devoted mother and can only imagine what she and her family are going through. Some of the class mailing lists are very active and some are dead. You just have to overcome your shyness about sending email to a mailing list. After all, these are not strangers. These are your fellow classmates from Encina. Be brave. Send an email to your group. And in return, when you read an email to your group, respond in kind and share your thoughts. If everyone only reads and lurks (I love that word "lurk"), you'll never get off the ground. Dave Fischer 79, what's happening in the encina1979 group. My sister Laurie Lau 77 was so taken with some of your posts she printed them out to save. ENCINA1962 The class of 62 members have been getting reacquainted. I hope they will not mind my sharing these messages, which show the power of a mailing list. I guess I've been away from ol Sacto so long that it upsets me when I go home and everything is so changed. So it doesn't seem like home any more. After my mother moved it was like home was gone. Landmarks have changed so much. I remember when we were in school Greenback Lane was like really out in the country. Now there isn't anything that resembles it. Boo Hoo! (try that in SF any evening and they'ed find you frozen stiff the next morning) Yes, its going to be a tough job but I'll have help. A lovely blond psychologist. A little younger (49) . Brains, personality and a Bay watch body. I'll try to struggle through. Yes, I guess us poor dumb flatlanders just don't get it. Please ,please tell all your SF friends that its just a dusty little cowtown with nothing to do and bad water.....I like not having to stand in line to see Phantom, Miss Saigon or Midori after a lovely dinner aboard a restored riverboat etc. etc......... Or those mosquitos will get you and Miss Bay watch! *giggle* Did you ever think that 49 would sound young? I am laughing so hard! But I would sure like to join you on that date. But alas I would ruin it for you.. I do like Sacratomato, I just am unfamiliar with it now. I went to the 61 bios page today, since that class was almost like part of our class. I was so sad when I was reading Peggy Barnes Bio. I don't know if any of you remember Lynn Skinner, but she died. I don't know of what or when but she was such a bubbly beautiful girl. I just felt sad all afternoon. I sure hope more of our classmates come on line with us. Speaking of plays, I haven't been to one since before we left SF area. THe last one I saw was Les Miserables. I can't get my husband out of the house in the evenings down here in cowboy land. We get some plays but they are usually up in Phoenix and Phoenix is almost like LA. Absolutely hell to drive through except there are very few freeways and it takes hours to get anywhere and the streets are still narrow and it scares me to death. Arizonans honk at everyone. It would drive you nuts. They think Californians are rude but they haven't looked at themselves. I started feeling like a voyeur, but, I was having so much fun reading all the e-group messages you have been sending, I thought in all fairness I should introduce myself. I know this is one that will stump all of you, but, the name is Linda Weatherford Ballance. Yes, I am from the "Class of 62", and, I did attend Encina all 4 years. I guess I was just more than a little unremarkable during those years. That does not mean that my memories are any less fond (I have great memories like all of you that still want to have a link to our youth). I do remember all of you (Randi sounds as bubbly as I remember her being in school, and, if you are the Sally Long I remember, I think your Mother was one of our Girl Scout Leaders).......;o).....,and, that is going back before our high school days. As for myself, I also live in Sacramento (returned 2 years ago after 32 years of marriage happily ended), in fact I live in the same house I grew up in. I am self employed (ex and I own a company together), and, I have 4 grown sons that all graduated from Encina. I don't know exactly how this e-groups thing works, but, it would be really interesting if we were able to send photos..............I don't know about the rest of you, but, I think it would be great fun to see what everyone looks like today.............I certainly would not know myself on the street if I went by my old year book photographs.........Yuck! My cousin Sheran Weatherford Yeager also attended Encina (Class of 62) as did my dearly departed sister-in-law Norma Drzewiecki Dunham (also Class of 62).........and, in memory of Norma, please, please, ladies and gentlemen...........get those mammograms! I will sign off for now and as I am not certain if this message is going to make it, I would appreciate it if someone, ANYONE, would let me know. By the way Randi..........I have a great many relatives that live in and around the Phoenix area (you are right, it is definately cowboy country) but, it would be my second pick after southern California. Take care all......................and keep the e-mail coming.....I am having the most fun reading all the messages, besides, I think it puts a smile on all our faces! You're right,Randi is just as bubbly as she was in school and I guess she I and started exchanging E mail at nearly the beginning of the Website. Then all of sudden she starts this business and she submerges for a while and now she's back (Thanks Randi) It is fun to get reacquainted and remember all the fun things we did. I'm very glad I grew up when and where I did. No drugs. No guns. Just fast cars and hamburgers at Harvey's on Fulton. Notice I didn't mention girls. That's not where my head was. That's changed somewhat, thankfully. Until 1992 it was still cars. I spent every vacation at the Bonneville Salt Flats driving my car or working on others. Like you, I was married for a very long time, twenty-eight years. I married Nancy Burks. She attended Encina for one year and then graduated from Mira Loma In 1963. We separated in 93 and divorced in 96. I worked for Southern Pacific for twenty years and in that time became involved in the investigation of the 1973 Roseville munitions train explosion and went on to work for a law firm for the last sixteen years doing much the same type of work. I live in the Pocket area and work downtown. Hmmmm seems I've gotten a little too chatty. Need to go to work. Glad you signed on. Its nice to look back and share memories with friends. We were all so gangly and innocent and full of fun. Bye For Now, Greg" Randi Kemper 62 wrote: "Linda, your letter came thorough just fine. I remember you. I don't know why you think you were unremarkable. It is really strange how we all probably perceived ourselves during our teen age years. I always felt that I was falling short of something. Not exactly sure, maybe why I got a B instead of what I considered an A. Or not having the right clothes. Or just not being what I wanted to be. I did put all those thoughts together in later years and started being what I wanted to be but it took a long time. I think that girls in our era were sort of just expected to grow up, get married and if you happened to find a career, it was by pure luck. I have three daughters and I raised them mostly by myself. I really pushed self worth into them and insisted they excel in school. They have all done well and one is married , expecting her second baby but she is 35. The other two 28 and 30 are still single although the 28 yr. old is engaged. No one in my family really thought one way or the other if I went to college or not. I don't think it was as if they didn't care , it just wasn't important to them. I was sad to hear about Norma. I keep a yearbook by my computer since the Encina page started, so I can refer to all the names I see mentioned. I'm surprised to see that I have usually pictured the person before I look them up. How old was Norma when she passed away? Did she have any children? One of the things I have had so far in my life is to have been blessed with good health. I know that could change at any given moment so I make sure I give thanks everyday. Wow four boys. You must have had your hands full. Having had only girls I can't imagine keeping up with boys. I have a grandson who is two and so active, I don't remember any of my girls with that amount of energy. I would love to see pictures of everyone, I will ask Harlan if this list supports picture files. I know some lists I'm on don't. I'm including an URL address that a friend in Kentucky did of me, so you can see who I am now. Greg already saw this. http://members.tripod.com/~faeb/ppals/randi.htm I have lots of pictures that I would love to share and would love to see everyone else's families. I really think this is a good way to get to know each other as we all really have a common bond, and if we are lucky enough in the future to see each other in person it will be more special. Boy am I rambling on and on or what! Hugs, Randi" Anyway, you get the idea. Later, John Whiteline 62 emailed a picture of a rose he grew in his yard and the discussion continued.
