The family is heading off to Disneyland and Legoland tomorrow for a few days before school starts again. REUNIONS Reunion season begins... The 69 reunion and the 73 mini-reunion are this weekend! If you have siblings or friends who might not know about their class reunions, please pass along this information. The classes which plan to have reunions this year are: 1964 1969 Saturday, August 21, 1999 at Ancil Hoffman Park Alan Dankman (adankman@worldnet.att.net) 1973 Mini-reunion: August 21, 1999 Rett Smart (irsmart@ix.netcom.com) 1974 Saturday, Sept 25, 1999 at Sacramento Red Lion Inn Bob Goosmann (Magusbob@hotmail.com) 1979 Saturday, Sept 25, 1999 at Hilton off Arden Way Laura Graff Allred (pacwest@foothill.net) Great Reunions: info@greatreunions.com 1984 1989 Saturday, August 28, 1999 at Howe Park Center Janice Barnes (jabarnes@dttus.com) 1994 Candy Mleczko (candym229@hotmail.com) GROUPS You can only send mail to the class mailing lists if you are a member. egroups identifies members by comparing the email address you send from to the list of subscribers. Therefore, if you send your email from a DIFFERENT email address, egroups forwards your mail to me to see if it's legitimate. I could remove this restriction, but the purpose is to prevent spammers from junkmailing the class mailing lists. Dan Tuning 79 tried to set up a class of 79 chat on Sunday evening, only to find egroups was down. This is why: "On Sunday, you may have noticed that we took the eGroups site down for a few hours. This scheduled downtime allowed our engineers, working furiously on their "day off," to reorganize our database system. Our four beefy new database machines make the site faster, more robust and should help to prevent "unscheduled downtimes" in the future. Thanks for your patience!" Sorry Dan! Congratulations to Patricia Allen Wilder 74: "Just wanted to update and let you know that my husband and I are now the proud grandparents of Keegan Issac Wilder. Our youngest son Daniel and his wife Raina gave birth on Saturday the 14 at 4:30pm and their son weights 5 lbs 15 oz and is 18 an 1/2 inches long. This is our first grandchild." Congratulations to Renee Welch 72: "Our oldest son Matthew called last night & he is ENGAGED ! We are so excited & happy for him. Wedding will be in December in Canada! Renee" ENCINA1979 Well, I'm happy to say that there's a lot more activity on the mailing lists for some classes. Just a reminder to sign your messages. Here are a couple of the more interesting posts from the last week. Dave Fischer 79: "The wildest thing I ever did was to come to Encina High in the first place, after having left the relative peace and civility of Jesuit High School. The Princely aeseticism I had known among the Catholic Contemplatives was in stark contrast to the drug-crazed and orgiastic culture of the Encina "Apaches" [sic]. Within my first week, I encountered many writhing hard-bodied young temptresses, and, so far estranged from the ideal of sex-within-the-confines-of-marriage-only were these young vixens, that, for a time, I felt rather like Jane Goodall must have (among the chimpanzees, baboons and such). And then it happened. As fate, chance, fortune, or blind chaos would have it, I was seated next to L Rose in Algebra II. Her eyes, blue as the Scottish sky, took me to a new level of divine madness. Yet, I resented her for this. What a curious bind: mystical-magical-astonishing attraction, combined with the resistance of a trapped fur-bearing wild animal. Hmm. So, having strayed from the civilized and noble realm of academic rigor, to the wild Sodom and Gomorah of scholastic evil, I decided to take the rest of the plunge into hell...you know, "when in Rome" and so forth. Pot, cocaine, demerol, alcohol, crystal meth, benzedrine, psylocibin, lsd, and anything else that would take me clear of conventional thinking. Going to class then became amusing. Spanish class stoned, PE drunk, Detention tripping, cutting class sober, ....."What's Not to Dig?" Luckily, the U.C. Davis Philosophy department put me back in touch with my academic bliss (epistomology-logic-ethics-aesthetics -metaphysics). Having gotten over the hormonal terrorism and love at first sight experience with Ms. Rose, I met a lovely (and very patient) friend in my wife. I am a lucky man, but no matter how wild the experiences were, I wouldn't be here without them." Then someone complained that they wanted to be removed from the encina1979 mailing list because they didn't have time to read all the messages Dave Fischer 79: "Hear the cry of your fellow human, Encina Alumni? Yet another victim of our produce and consume lifestyle, weeping as she walks the treadmill of social conditioning. "I have no TIME for this nonesense...I have to get busy doing the serious business of life ...those things that concern ME..." Never pausing to reflect about the nature of this ME as a reality referant. Hmm. Someone needs to hug this child of the universe and compassionately explain the use of the Delete Key. Imagine the sadistic pleasure our hateful fellow alumni might miss if they didn't click the mouse key like the trigger of a gun, each time they were confronted with another inane chattersome e-mail, from a vaguely connected adademic lineage. Hmm, indeed. xoxo***, Dave Fischer P.S. The "*"'s are pinches to the left buttock." Lisa Rodland 79: "Dave, did you learn to write like that from Encina????? Where the heck was I? How long does it take you to compose such heartfelt writing?" Dave Fischer 79: "Please pardon the "adademic" and other misspellings, my attitude about spelling errors is somewhat cavalier. Priggish and pedantic grammarians need people like me to keep them feeling important. And so I bow, in humble homage to them." Jackie Ferguson 79: "Over the course of a few e-mails, I find I have developed a deep and profound respect and admiration. What skill, what daring, what cynicism. These few pseudo-anonymous cyber correspondence may be enough to propel me to complete my questionnaire and actually BUY a ticket to the reunion and possibly have the honor of re-acquainting myself with your personage. I find I am more interested in what my classmates have become than slogging through time- and ego-distorted histories, and your current state of brain cell activity delights me. Your spouse probably either deserves a Nobel prize for peace, or a full day at the spa of her choice." Dan Tuning 79: "I do have to say that I agree with you about the Dave Fischer piece. His Gunning-Fog index runs right off the chart! He makes me feel like my writings are petroglyphical scriblings. It must be that educational foundation established at his private, "pre-Encinian" experience. His writings remind me of Scott Osler, formerly of the National, former sports columnist for the SF Chronicle and now editorial writer for the Chronicle and writing in place of the late Lowell Cohn. Scott's column are an absolute riot.....check em out sometime." Robert Watson 79: "wildest event that you ever witnessed???..........humm...... The day it snowed at Encina Marty Knight's fist fight with Mr. Sanders Evan Dick getting thrown into the pool after stepping on senior lawn The blood trail that Todd Bouches (SP?) fingers left after he cut them off in woodshop (I had the class right after his) Plus everything that Dave eluded to..." Kirt Shearer 80: "Dave, I think you are way off the mark. I am in total agreement with Chris and Carol. This nonstop barrage of trivial e-mail has taken it's toll on me. The emotional distress of having to scroll through your juvenile musings regarding your deviant adolescence is more than anyone should have to bear. Since I am now an important Sacramento businessman, my time is far too valuable to be taken up with this tripe. As a result, I'll attach an excel spreadsheet itemizing the amount of my time taken up with processing these e-mails, and am billing you for that amount. Please use my attourny's contact information on the excel file for remittance, for a person of my stature should not have to be bothered any longer with a phone. I'm even charging you for the time it's taking me to type this response and, unfortunately for you, I type slowly. I think it is a crime against society -no -, against mankind that you maliciously and publicly ridicule such fine examples of humanity such as Chris and Carol. With people like this in our community; people that obviously have a very firm grasp on what is truly important, we will excel as a people .......able to break free from the bondage of mirth, satire, or abstract thought. I shame thee... Now if you'll excuse me, I must go and continue laminating my Rolodex cards.... Regards, "THE" Kirt Shearer" Dave Fischer 79: "Dear "THE" Kirt: Much as a spank to the buttocks of a newborn babe is painful, but necessary to begin life/breathing, so too your words hurt and wound me, but bring me back from the delirium of e-mail madness and the odius missuse of other person's time. I have not a penny to my name, but I will work -from this day forward- to pay back all my debts, both financial and karmic. It is clear that I have a profound case of arrested development, but surely I am to be pitied - and NOT scorned. My alienation from the "Glory Days" of all the other Encina Alumni is most natural if you simply look at the facts. Back then, I was little better than a rediculous horny midget. I had not the option of dating, going to the prom, playing football, chewing tobacco, having a "babe" or "woman", driving a muscle car {except riding a telephone book booster seat}, beating my fists into a locker, fighting with Mr. Sander.... nevermind outstanding scholarship. Nowadays, I am just an overweight (5'11" 327lbs) horny endomorph. With all of the societal ideals, propogated -I would add- by popular music which you help disseminate, it is no wonder I have this bitterness I need to work through. Thanks for helping me to grow, I owe a lot I know, to all the friends I have loved before. I will now go about the business of turning over a new leaf. Kirt, you are my brother, and my inspiration. You alone got close to all those gorgeous madrigals, as such, you are my hero. Humbly Yours, The New and Improved Dave Fischer" Dan Tuning 79: "Hey Kirt, Thanks for the value added billing technique......"slow typing" I'll attempt that approach of an "important Sacramento Business Person (I won't use the term "Man")" with the next "important Bay Area Client" and see just where it lands me!!! And Dave......just keep em rollin buddy......there's a place for you right next to ole Scott Osler. In a world of IPO's, M & A Activity, Downsizing, Just-in-time Inventory, IR Code, Regs, Rulings and Tax Court Memoranda, R & D, Transfer Pricing, FSC's, DSC's, SRLY's, CRCO's, Consolidated filings, Multi-state apportionment, 10K's and 10Q's......(the list just goes on and on and on).....a mental deviation is often well deserved. We live in such a complex, convaluded societal structure with so many pressures.......I find a break from all of that by reading a piece ascribed by a Fisher or Osler liked to a breath of fresh air ........a break.......allowing for some rethought and even the possibility of some personal synergistic synaptic thought processes (if such a thing is possible). And to paraphrase Mr. Fischer.....for those not desiring to read such material.....there is always the old delete key. Sounds like perhaps you've "shocked the monkey" Mr. Fischer. All the best! Dan Tuning" Dave Fischer 79: "Dan, I am your humble servant, always, and thanks for the prod... "gunshy?" As for Mr. Shearer, his gift of humor and astute observations of human folly have been buoying me up since my earliest days of teenage angst. -Dave" Just imagine how much more interesting the Encina Update would be if Dave Fischer were the editor... ENCINA1972 Jon Scott 72: "I am going to throw my 2 cents worth in again. I think my favorite year was fifth grade with Mrs. Sanford. Alot of kids didn't like her but I did. I had her for 3rd grade and again in 5th. She had one of her older sons (not Steve) who had a band come in and I remember them singing Peter, Paul and Mary songs that I really enjoyed. I especially remember the song "Puff the Magic Dragon". (I am not sure if that was a PP&M song but I enjoyed it)." Michael Babayco 72: "I couldn't stand her because I was always getting in trouble from her! What did she do that you liked??? A strange twist to my story with her was that as a senior in high school, I worked as a Noon Duty Aide back at the elementary school I (and you!) grew up in - Greer School - and Mrs. Sanford was still working there. One day a new kid came out to the playground and basically went off - kicking, screaming, hitting everyone he could. All I could think of was to grab the kid and hold on. He kept hitting and trying to bite me. As a crowd gathered around us, some kid said "Here comes Mrs. Sanford!" and everyone backed quietly away. Mrs. Sanford came confidently up to me and the kid, spoke his name sternly, and told him to follow her to the principal's office. He immediately went limp in my arms. As I let go of him, he obediently followed her. Wow! She definitely had the gift! I was impressed!" Merri Sue Goff 72: "I also remember having an green enamel mustache painted on my face in the hallway before Spanish class by Mr. Bohn. I had to go to the shop and get turpentine to remove it. Some fun. It took a lot of convincing by me to keep my parents from complaining to the school. Let's see, in today's litigious society, would that be assault with a paint brush?? How about it Larry? Merri Sue" Larry Fahn 72: "Mer-Sue--Not only would someone be likely to bring an assualt action, (attorneys will sue for anything), but the act of painting on your person (that mustache applied to your upper lip) was probably actionable under Proposition 65, the toxics warning initiative, for failing to provide you with a warning that the materials you were being exposed to contained chemicals known to the State of California as likely to cause cancer and/or birth defects. Back then almost all paint products contained lead, toluene and other toxic compounds. Now most have been removed from paint, although many paint removers stll contain heavy duty solvents such as toluene and benzene (check the warnings on the can). Also, check your nail polish and other nail care products. When you breath that stuff over many years, you could be doing yourself in without a clue. --Larry Fahn (a reformed, former lawyer)" ENCINA1962 Greg Vitaich 62: "Hello John I'm Greg Vitaich AKA Phelps. I remember you and think this E-groups thing is very cool. Don't know how it works because I haven't been paying attention to what Harlan ( AKA spellcheck Hairline ) has been doing but he sure is creative and seems to have breathed new life into the Website. I can't imagine how much time he puts into this. THANKS HAIRLINE Ah HARLAN..." Barbara Rea 62: "Hi everyone, It sounds like a lot of us left the nest, but I am amazed how many stayed and how many returned to Sacto. By the time the next reunion comes around it would be great if we could really get a lot of people involved with our website. Anyone out there want to take charge of the web page. I'm afraid I just haven't had time. I'd be glad to turn it over to someone more knowledgeable and with more time. Barbara Rea Fuller" Greg Vitaich 62: Hi Barbie Jo I'm not smart enough to do the website and I don't have a computer at home. Sorta decided that if I did I would never have time for other projects. I'm one that stayed. I traveled a lot for work and the military but always came home to Sacratomato. I laugh at the people who say its an unsophisticated Cowtown. Especially the Bay Area folks who went upsidedown on their real estate in the last ten years. Those same ten years have brought Hi-tech companies out of silicon valley and SF to Sacramento and lots of good jobs and cosmopolitan thinking into the arts and philanthropic communities. Soon Wille Brown and his cronies will gobble up the Presidio and turn it into a commercial center and the only place you will be able to find a tree with be Golden Gate Park This is a great city and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else !!!!! The e-groups thing is great . Harlan is a genius. Bye for now , Greg Vitaich AKA Greg Phelps" Thanks for the plugs Greg... LABOR DAY Michelle Kirkman 84 writes: If you don't have any plans for Labor Day this year, think about going to the Nicolaus 8th Annual Labor Day Parade. This parade benefits the 4 schools in the South Sutter area of Nicolaus, East Nicolaus, Rio Oso, and Pleasant Grove. All proceeds go to the schools. School faculty, parents and children participate in all the booths and events taking place. If you like small town community events you will love this parade. There is something for everyone: great food and drink, raffles, dunk tank, fabulous children's area, live music, ENTERTAINMENT GALORE.... Pancake breakfast begins at 7a.m. and parade at 10a.m. You will want to arrive well before 10a.m. to get a good parking spot and seat along the parade route. Just 25 miles north of Sacramento, the town of Nicolaus is off Highways 99/70 North. STORE Karin Hibma 69 sells a cool line of "Walking Man" clothes at the Walking Man website (www.walkingman.com).
