We had about 65 people attend a picnic at Slide Hill Park in Davis, with about 10 from out of state, including Japan. The weather was great for this time of year. REUNIONS The classes which plan to have reunions this year are: 1964 1969 Alan Dankman (adankman@worldnet.att.net) 1973 Mini-reunion: Rett Smart (irsmart@ix.netcom.com) 1974 Bob Goosmann (Magusbob@hotmail.com) 1979 Laura Graff Allred (pacwest@foothill.net) Great Reunions: info@greatreunions.com 1984 1989 Janice Barnes (jabarnes@dttus.com) Ridgely Sheldon 68 wrote: "for the class of 68 one of the most responsive devices we used was the first two mailers, was established from the list from graduation and our last reunion the (20 year provided by John Manikas). We sent out 200 the first mailing and overall received over 400 responses. We requested that alumni not only list their information but any information regarding any friends or relatives. this was very helpful and then we were able to track alot of people." Just a warning for those of you organizing reunions this year. The class of 73 has used Swentowsky for their reunion photos and memory books for the past few reunions. However, this past reunion, we did not receive our memory books until last week. Be forewarned. BIOS For those of you having reunions this year, keep those bios coming! EMAIL FORWARDING If you are receiving the Encina Update but your email address is not listed in the class directory, I would appreciate it if you would write and give me permission to list your email address in the online directory. I'm finding it increasingly time consuming to continue to forward mail to those of you with "care of webmaster" for your email address. Most of those who I've forwarded mail to have allowed me to list their email addresses but many of you have ignored my request. The following alumni from the 1960-69 class directories have "care of webmaster" instead of their email address listed in the class directory: 1961 Wayne Singer 1963 Peter Chase Geoffrey Fischer 1964 William Hesser 1965 George Edge Dan Howard Bill Welch 1966 Gretchen Kern Patricia Lucas Cheryl Smith 1967 Dave Babayco Doreen Blumenfeld Mike Churchill Janet DeBacco Patrice Gaffney Linda Goff Charlene Jenkins Richard Kendrick Debbie Kern Marty Mearns Nina Paladino Marilyn Peterson Edith Schmidt Gloria Schulze Paul Williams 1968 Paula Allen Rita Bonini Linda Burt Joan Cole Jan Flint Jay Gunter Sue Hacken Susan Hamilton Jim Lawson Rick Lee Craig Madsen Jay McGuire Renay Montane Kathy Otterson Sally Rulison Wendy Tellefsen Brent Wilson 1969 Diane Baxter Carol Brereton Jim Helmich Chantelle Lehman Lowell McPherson David Strader If your name is on this list, I would really appreciate it if you would list your email address in the directory so that friends can contact you directly. I prefer not to forward email unless you have a good reason for concealing your email address. Next week, I'll out the 70s. PARENTS If any of you have parents who would like to be on the mailing list please let me know. Parent's are often still in contact with other Encina parents and may be able to help track down missing alumni. CLASS OF 1973 I received my memory book from our 25th reunion last fall on June 15th. Hopefully you should have all received yours by now. I was pleasantly surprised to see the pictures were in color for the first time. I'll scan in the memory book and add it to the 73 homepage for those who did not attend the reunion. CLASS OF 1977 I added the pictures my sister Laurie Lau 77 took at John and Theresa Hyland's 40th birthday party, which was held at the Lawrence Hall of Science on April 24, 1999: CLASS OF 1989 Invitations for the 10 year reunion went out last week. My mother Mary Lau was his first grade teacher at Greer Elementary School and he's been corresponding with her by email. It turns out Bob is now a first grade teacher himself in Elk Grove! When Bob started teaching he went to Greer Elementary hoping to observe my mother teaching, but she had already retired. So instead, she's going to visit Bob's classroom and observe him teaching! MARY LAU My mom was visiting us last weekend for a family gathering and she decided to look through my yearbook collection to see who she recognized from her classes at Greer Elementary School, where she taught first through third grades from 1973-1993. The 1985 Encina graduates were students from her very first class at Greer in 1973-74. Mrs Lau says congratulations and best wishes to these graduates, who were former students of hers at Greer Elementary School: '85 Andy Budlong, Chris Jensen, Jason Kemp, Robert Pasley, Mark Shumway and Angela Vienna '86 Mary Jensen '87 Shawn Farrow, Kim Hood, Jerry Lewis, Samantha Stone and Larry Veteto '88 Heather Bailey and Peter Cassillas '89 Amy King '90 Monica Edwards, Chris Komlodi and Kenyan Epps '92 Damien Small '94 Lynne Komlodi and Olivia Martinez '95 Teri Edwards and Amy Alexander This is not a complete list, just those students of hers who's names jumped out when she scanned the NAMES of the graduates in each yearbook. She hasn't looked at the 97 or 98 yearbooks. A few students were in more than one of her classes since she moved up and down the grades over the years. COLUMBINE Peggy Crans 89 sent me the testimony of Darrel Scott, father of two victims of the Columbine HS shooting, before the House Judiciary committee on May 27, 1999. "Since the dawn of creation there has been both good and evil in the heart of men and of women. We all contain the seeds of kindness or the seeds of violence. The death of my wonderful daughter Rachel Joy Scott, and the deaths of that heroic teacher and the other children who died must not be in vain. Their blood cries out for answers. The first recorded act of violence was when Cain slew his brother Abel out in the field. The villain was not the club he used. Neither was it the NCA, the National Club Association. The true killer was Cain and the reason for the murder could only be found in Cain's heart. In the days that followed the Columbine tragedy, I was amazed at how quickly fingers began to be pointed at groups such as the NRA. I am not a member of the NRA. I am not a hunter. I do not even own a gun. I am not here to represent or defend the NRA - because I don't believe that they are responsible for my daughters death. Therefore I do not believe that they need to be defended. If I believed they had anything to do with Rachel's murder I would be their strongest opponent. I am here today to declare that Columbine was not just a tragedy - it was a spiritual event that should be forcing us to look at where the real blame lies! Much of that blame lies here in this room. Much of that blame lies behind the pointing fingers of the accusers themselves.. I wrote a poem just four nights ago that express my feelings best. This was written way before I knew l would be speaking here today. Your laws ignore our deepest needs Your words are empty air. You've stripped away our heritage. You've outlawed simple prayer. Now gunshots fill our classrooms. And precious children die. You seek for answers everywhere. And ask the question "WHY"? You regulate restrictive laws. Through legislative creed. Add yet you fail to understand. That God is what we need! Men and women are three-part beings. We all consist of body, soul, and spirit. When we refuse to acknowledge a third part of our makeup, we create a void that allows evil, prejudice, and hatred to rush in and wreak havoc. Spiritual influences were present within our educational Systems for most of our nation's history. Many of our major colleges began as theological seminaries. This is an historic fact. What has happened to us as a nation? We have refused to honor God, and in doing so, we open the doors to hatred and violence. And, when something as terrible as Columbine's tragedy occurs - - politicians immediately look for a scapegoat such as the NRA. They immediately seek to pass more restrictive laws that continue to erode away our personal and private liberties. We do not need more restrictive laws. Eric and Dylan would not have been stopped by metal detectors. No amount of gun laws can stop someone who spends months planning this type of massacre. The real villain lies within our OWN hearts. Political posturing and restrictive legislation are not the answers. The young people of our nation hold the key. There is a spiritual awakening taking place that will not be squelched! We do not need more religion. We do not need more gaudy Television evangelists spewing out verbal religious garbage. We do not need more million dollar church buildings built while people with basic needs are being ignored. We do need a change of heart and an humble acknowledgment that this nation was founded on the principle of simple trust in God. As my son, Craig, lay under that table in the school library and saw his two friends murdered before his very eyes, he did not hesitate to pray in school. I defy any law or politician to deny him that right! I challenge every young person in America and around the world to realize that on April 20, 1999 at Columbine High School - - prayer was brought back to our schools. Do not let the many prayers offered by those students be in vain. Dare to move into the new millennium with a sacred disregard for legislation that violates your conscience and denies your God-given right to communicate with Him. To those of you who would point your finger at the NRA, I give to you sincere challenge: dare to examine your own heart before you cast the first stone! My daughter's death will not be in vain. The young people of this country will not allow that to happen." INSIDERS Bill Glaholt 88 wrote: You're invited to come see... The INSIDERS performing at Waterworld U.S.A. CHILDCARE For those of you working parents concerned about the effect of childcare on your kids, I thought this Wall Street Journal article was very interesting. Here's the Bottom Line On Chld Care's Impact June 23, 1999 by Sue Shellenbarger IF YOU'RE confused by the news on child care, you're not alone. A raft of new child-care research has sparked reports that conclude, among other things, that child care is good for school readiness, is bad for mother-child bonding or has no effect at all. In fact, there aren't any simple answers. Researchers are only beginning to understand how dozens of factors combine and interact to shape children's development. Still, these latest studies are delving deeper into the effects of child care than they ever have before, and doing a better job of separating cause and effect. The picture of how the nation's patchwork of child-care services is affecting kids is mixed. After plowing through a three-inch stack of studies, I offer my best attempt at a working parent's brief guide to the risks and rewards of child care: School readiness: The mother of all child-care studies, by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, has been tracking 1,103 children since 1991, recently releasing the third series of reports on its continuing research. It has found no overall difference in the cognitive and language skills of three-year-olds in their mother's care vs. those in full-time child care, after controlling for many family and home factors. Kids in high-quality child-care settings, as gauged by care-giver sensitivity, responsiveness and conversation, did better than all other children, even those in their mother's care, on cognitive and language tests. Kids in child-care centers, as opposed to those with nannies or in family day-care homes or other settings, did best. Children in poor-quality child care did worst. A separate study, a four-university Cost, Quality and Child Outcomes study, tracking 800 children through second grade, also found that children who attended high-quality centers had better language, math and social skills through kindergarten. Bonding: Some studies have suggested that extensive use of child care early in life can damage children's emotional bonds with their mothers. NICHD findings so far have tempered but not erased those concerns. When measured at 15 months old, children's attachment to their mothers wasn't hurt by child care alone, researchers found. But there was some slight damage to bonding when mothers were less sensitive. That is, child care puts kids with insensitive mothers at greater risk. WHEN THOSE same children were three years old, their attachment to their mothers, as measured by whether they seek contact and closeness after a brief separation, wasn't affected. Researchers will continue to track the children. Sensitivity: Here's a twist: Child-care use affects parents. The NICHD study shows that the more hours of child care a child receives from infancy through age three, the less sensitive the child's mother is. Mothers' sensitivity was rated by the supportiveness, warmth and respect they showed their children during videotaped play session. Mothers whose children were in high-quality care tended to be more sensitive, suggesting parents draw support from good care-givers. Aware that mothers who are already insensitive by nature might be choosing to use more child care in the first place, researchers controlled the results for many factors that tend to indicate or cause insensitivity -- including mothers' attitudes toward separation from their children, emotional state, personality, income, education and family support. What do the findings mean? Tuning in to a child is a skill that takes practice, time and effort, a process parents need consciously to safeguard when using lots of child care. Other studies suggest dads are affected by child care, too. Jay Belsky, a child-care researcher at Pennsylvania State University, found in a study of 120 families that using more day care led to slightly less positive interaction by fathers with their children. And Deborah Lowe Vandell at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, another veteran researcher, found in a study of 500 families that heavier use of child care for infants was tied to increased depression and marital worries in fathers, among other things. Parent Power: There's growing evidence that parents have the power to mediate any bad effect of child care. One study found good parenting sharply reduced the bad effect lots of early child care seemed to have on kids' behavior. Also, in the NICHD study, children of working mothers who believed that their employment benefited their children developed better skills in child care. AWARENESS is parents' best tool. In past studies, "kids whose mothers were perceptive about the potential effects were doing really well in child care," says NICHD researcher Margaret Tresch Owen of the University of Texas, Dallas. These mothers were making "an effort to monitor, to moderate" any risks of child care and "encourage the good potential." Quality: High quality is the closest thing to a magic bullet you will find in nonmaternal child care, erasing nearly every risk and yielding benefits in cognitive, language, math and social skills and behavior. Trouble is, the NICHD found only 9% of U.S. child care is excellent and only 30% is rated "good." Three-fifths of child-care settings fail the high-quality test, with 53% rated fair and 8% rated poor. As complicated as all that is, the findings ring true in my experience. And they shed light on our best path as a society: to shore up child-care quality, and to shore up parents as well, expanding the choices they have early in children's lives, and affirming them in the monumental role they play in shaping kids.
