Several alumni have confirmed receiving the Encina Update at a hotmail address. So if you gave me a non-hotmail address and want to switch back, let me know. CLASS OF 74 REUNION Regarding the need for someone to take chare of the 74 reunion, Bob Goosmann wrote: "Being local in Sacramento and having been on the 15-year reunion committee, I am willing to take this on. I think the first step is to issue a call for volunteers to help; Anyone interested in helping can contact me at magusbob@hotmail.com or call me at (916) 649-9141. We also need a date--in order to plan this properly, I'm thinking sometime in August. Regarding Mike Lamb's offer of his restaurant (at Tahoe), I think it's extremely generous but I also believe we'd have a tough time getting a lot of people up to Tahoe. But I'm open to any and all suggestions. I'll be in London April 6-12 and won't be able to respond to e-mail during that time. Hopefully when I get back there will be some offers of help?! I am in touch with a couple of fellow alumni who would probably be interested. Please let me know what your thoughts are." AARON FORD 88 Aaron Ford sent me the names of his FIVE sisters who were Encina grads, none of whom were in the alumni database: Connie Ford 76 Sharon Ford 77 Michelle Ford 78 Denise Ford 80 Coleen Ford 81 Aaron wrote: "Yep, I'm the only boy and the youngest. I still can't believe my parents had so many kids, but I'm not complaining :-)" Can anyone top six siblings who graduated from Encina? Even if you can't, I'd like to hear from you about your Encina siblings. SECOND GENERATION Mark Ballance 91 wrote: I just wanted to remark that I am one of four second generation students. My mother Linda Ballance Weatherford graduated in 62 (62 was the first graduating class that spent all four years at Encina). My brothers: Lance Ballance (85), Bryan Ballance (87), Chris Ballance (94), and myself Mark Ballance (91). We may have the most second generation graduates to our fame." I'm going to add the Ballance family to the Encina Hall of Fame too. That makes three second generation families. Any more? CLASS OF 62 Randi Muller 62 complained that only she and Barbara Rea 62 have submitted bios for the 62 homepage. She would like to hear from more classmates. Randi sent me three of her 1958 Encina newspapers this week and I'll try and scan them in soon. One article talks about how they voted on a mascot and Apaches was defeated! GINNY PRIVATEER CORSI Ginny was a teacher at Encina from 1966-67. Ginny sent in her bio: Occupation: Management Consultant Bio: When I left Encina, I left teaching. Went on to marry, have two daughters and became a newspaper reporter. Went on through political activism to become Chief of Staff to New York State's first woman Lieutenant Governor. From there to the Aspen Institute's Executive Seminar Program, to the US State Department, then to Wall Street where I worked for 20 years running Institutes, seminars and eventually heading up sales and marketing for investment management firms. Trivia: I'm a trustee of Outward Bound, the Hurricane Island (Maine) School and have gone on too many courses and climbed too many ropes. Hobbies: Still an avid golfer, tennis player and biker...all very possible all the time in Boulder. (Yes, it's all fake...)" STREET LIFE In his Wednesday Street Life column, Andrew Serwer wrote: "AOL.... With AOL stock on a mega (kaiser) roll, the number of millionaires at the company is now in the thousands! But some top execs are much wealthier, try tens or hundreds of millions!!!! So how is Steve Case going to keep them on the farm? (This is known in the biz as the Microsoft problem.) Apparently Bob Pittman has a solution. He's been getting the senior guys into some serious consumption. The strategy is, show 'em how great it is to own your own airplane (or wine cellar, or third home), then they go out and buy one and then they have to keep working to pay for it!!!!" Jeff Bezos, amazon.com founder, was quoted recently as saying something to the effect that early on, amazon.com was profitable for a quarter. But he followed up by saying, we made a mistake, it won't happen again (for a long time). The Internet tulip bubble will burst someday. You know things are bad when even your 7 year old son wants to buy amazon.com stock. Please don't be one of the people who loses their shirt... REPORT CARD Heddy Crowder sent me the most current Encina Accountability Report card. I'll scan it in and publish it on the website. Thanks Heddy! HALL OF FAME For the many newcomers to the Encina Update list, you may not realize the website has a Hall of Fame which lists Encina alumni who have achieved some measure of celebrity: http://www.encinahighschool.com/halloffame.htm For instance: Timothy B Schmidt 65: bass guitar for the Eagles Richard Montoya 77: author, playwright, actor Tim Heintz 79: jazz artist, song writer Lou DeCosta 66: tv writer, director Vicky Liviakis 72: tv news personality Harry Stockman 68: tv weatherman Tom Dunhain 68: tv personality Tim Bond 76: artistic director at Oregon Shakespeare Festival at Ashland ... Feel free to nominate your classmates and fellow alumni. EXPERTS There is also an Experts page for Encina alumni who are willing to offer expert advice on their specialty: NETMIND At the bottom of most pages there is a Netmind "Mind-it" box. If you enter your email address and click on the button, you'll receive email notification whenever the page changes. This is an efficient way to keep apprised of changes to your class directory or class homepage. You can even have Netmind email the whole page to you. DECEASED Chris Kojima wrote that Paul Dimick 70 passed away last year. HOW COMMON IS YOUR NAME? "How common is your name in the US? You might be interested in finding out, but what really tickled us were the extensive links to American stats - everything from Abbreviations to Zip Codes. Anyway, back to the names.... Besides last names, there are 4,275 female first names and 1,219 male first names which you can research based on frequency or rank. Go crazy." http://www.census.gov/genealogy/www/namesearch.html This is cool. Check it out. DR SEUSS Dr. Seuss Week, Day 1: While scholars of all ages search for the symbolic meaning of "Green Eggs And Ham," the truth behind the story is that Theodore Seuss Geisel wrote the work on a dare from his editor, Bennett Cerf, that he couldn't produce a book using a vocabulary of less than 50 words.
