Subject:Encina Update (vacation/booster club theft/reunions/free checking/teachers/basketball/broken email/missing/what's new) Date:Fri, 26 Feb 1999 11:28:55 -0800 ENCINA ALUMNI, VACATION I'm back from skiing at Whistler for a week. It's taken me a while to wade through several hundred email messages which accumulated along with backlog at work. Thanks for the notes from those of you who wished me well. We had a good trip, the weather was reasonable, the snow was great, the mountains huge. I had one bad fall when we only allowed ourselves 15 minutes to get 5000 feet down the mountain to retrieve our kids from ski lessons. But the cuts on my face have already healed. Whistler claims to be the largest ski resort in North America. Sunday the 14th was their biggest day ever and the lines reminded me of California. Whistler village is huge, with 97 restaurants and enumerable shops. BOOSTER CLUB THEFT Terri Jurich 74, Lorna Cline 73, Diane Kelly 73 and Pepai Falck 73 wrote about the Encina Booster Club being robbed by an off duty sheriff moonlighting as a security officer for their bingo games. I found this article on the Sacramento Bee website. "Sheriff's official quits in theft case: Suspected of stealing school's bingo funds By Ted Bell Bee Staff Writer (Published Feb. 23, 1999) A recently promoted Sacramento County sheriff's lieutenant abruptly resigned Monday after he was arrested on suspicion of stealing a large amount of money from a high school boosters club's bingo receipts. Larry Booher, 37, was booked on grand theft charges and released on his own recognizance Monday. The Sheriff's Department refused to provide details of the alleged theft other than to note that Booher moonlighted as a security officer for the bingo games benefiting Encina High School. Three sources said the amount that was reportedly stolen was at least $15,000, but none could say how the theft was uncovered or for how long it might have gone on. "The Sheriff's Department recently received information that cash shortages were noted at the Encina High School Booster Club bingo operation," sheriff's spokesman Lt. Jim Cooper said in a short statement. "An investigation was undertaken immediately targeting Booher, who had worked in an off-duty capacity during the thefts," the statement read. "Booher was released on his own recognizance and has resigned from the department." Booher, a 15-year veteran of the force, could not be reached for comment. Cooper refused to add any further details, and calls to Sheriff Lou Blanas were not returned. Booher rose from the ranks rapidly and recently was appointed assistant to Undersheriff Carol Daly as the new Blanas administration took office. Prior to that posting, Booher had been a lieutenant in charge of the department's community service center in Rancho Cordova. "I'm just shocked," said Encina Principal Tom Gemma Monday night. "He (Booher) is the nicest fellow you'd want to meet." Gemma said Encina, on Bell Street south of Arden Way, has struggled to raise extra funds. Many of the school's students come from lower-income homes, with more than one in every three coming from families receiving welfare. Gemma said the booster club takes in only about $40,000 per year, and about 65 percent of that goes to cover expenses. Many of the area's charity bingo games hire off-duty deputies for security. Gemma said Booher had been working as a paid security officer for the Encina booster club "for at least five years." "They (the boosters) were planning on changing security at the bingo games because of the cost," Gemma said. "The idea was to switch from (off-duty) sheriffs to a more economical private company." Grand theft charges can be felonies or misdemeanors. A maximum penalty could draw as much as three years in prison." If you would like to contribute to the Encina Booster's Club your donation would be greatly appreciated. REUNIONS The CLASS OF 1989 gets the award for being the first to finalize their reunion date. Janice Barnes wrote: "Finally, we have reserved a place to hold the reunion and secured a date. The date is August 28, 1999. It has been difficult to reserve a place due to the popularity of summer weddings. Several of our classmates live outside of the state and have children so the summer months are good for traveling." Let this be a warning to the other classes... The one thing you need to do early is reserve a place to hold your reunion. Today I heard from Great Reunions, who will be organizing the CLASS of 1979 reunion this year. The chairperson is Laura Graff Allred 79 but inquiries should be directed to info@greatreunions.com  . Great Reunions will be setting up a homepage at their website www.greatreunions.com  for the Class of 1979's 20 year reunion in a month or so. At this time there is no date or location. I'll also keep the Encina 79 homepage up to date with details. FREE CHECKING I received commission checks from eToys and amazon.com so I went to Bank of America to open a new checking account for the website money. They don't have any accounts without a service charge for small accounts. To avoid a monthly fee you either have to have direct deposit or maintain a minimum balance of $1 or 2k. Does anyone know of a bank or savings and loan which has free checking accounts with no minimum balance and no monthly fee. The balance is going to be too small to meet any minimum balance requirements. No interest is fine. I've heard some credit unions offer such accounts...
