Sent: Friday, May 24, 2002 1:44 PM Subject: [Encina Update] Encina Update (challenge, pledges, reunions, siblings, foulk, bios, humor, hoax, whats new, homecoming) ENCINA ALUMNI, My home systems are back online and I'm unable to update the Encina website again. If you submitted a change or bio, you might want to check and make sure it didn't get lost while I was down. I'm continuing to receive the klez virus from alumni. Please install antivirus software on your PC as you may be infecting other classmates and friends. ALUMNI CHALLENGE Steve Palmer 74 sent me his rough first pass video to review. Steve had to incorporate video from three or four different tapes in order to reconstruct the entire game from different cameras. Now he understands why they have an Academy award for best editting . Steve told me the video consumes about 50GB+ and fills up his entire disk, so it's stretching the limits of Final Cut on his Mac. I've editted little videoclips which were a few minutes long. The rough cut is about 90 minutes. I watched the first three quarters last night and Steve's done a really nice job and I think the result will have been worth waiting for. Stephanie Woo has purchased the tapes. As soon as Steve is done with the final version of the tape, Encina will dupe the tapes and mail them out to everyone who pledged or paid for dinner. So get those checks in. No money, no tape . ALUMNI CHALLENGE PLEDGES The Encina High School Booster Club is a nonprofit organization and pledges to the Booster Club are TAX DEDUCTIBLE. The Booster Club will include their tax ID number in their letter acknowledging your pledge or donation. I've calculated the total pledge for each donor on the pledge/rsvp page: http://www.encinahighschool.com/homecoming/challenge02/rsvps.htm Please check this page to see how much you owe. Make your checks payable to the Encina High School Booster Club and send them to: Encina High School Attention: Heddy Crowder 1400 Bell Street Sacramento,CA 95825 Thank you for supporting Encina! Brad is the loving husband of wife, Isa (Haggerty) Foulk of San Rafael; loving son of Jay and Viola Foulk of Sacto. and beloved brother to sisters, Sandra Wright of Sacto. and Marla Moore of Sparks, NV. A graduate of Encina High School and an avid motorcycle enthusiast, he will be remembered and treasured by family members and friends. With sparkling blue eyes and dazzling smile, he always lifted your spirits. During his lengthy and courageous battle with M.S., Brad was an inspiration to all who met him. A zest for life and an abundance of love in his heart kept his indomitable spirit alive and vibrant. He was a teacher to us all. Celebration services will be held at a later date. Sandi Foulk Wright 61 wrote: A Celebration of Life memorial will be held in San Rafael on June 30. As Brad was a motorcycle enthusiast, his wife Isa, some friends and me will be going on a "last ride" with Brad and return for the memorial. I will forward exact location and time as soon as it has been decided. A contribution to M.S. in Brad's name would be appropriate. Then several years in a "real job." In 1982 I married, continued working until our children came along. I have chosen to stay at home with my children. I worked in the school my children attended teaching classroom music for the last 5 years. I have been directing the choir at our church for the past 12 years. Friends: My closest friends were involved in music at Encina: Jerri Fox, Sue Alexander, Paula Vanderford, Scott Brownell, Dan Sugimoto, Bill Bain, Ginger & Eve Tulley, et al! Hobbies: Still music! I also love reading, scrapbooking, geneology research, travelling and spending time with friends! Kids: Kendra is 16, and just finishing her Junior year at Del Oro in Loomis. She is a very intelligent and hardworking student. She is an excellent pianist, Yay! She is thinking toward college and has very high goals for herself. Monica is 13, and finishing her 7th grade year at Newcastle Elementary School. She loves sports, especially soccer and volleyball. She is also an intelligent young woman. They are both wonderful people inside and out! Grade_school: Wyda Way Elementary and Howe Ave. Grade_school_friends: Jerri Fox, Scott & Mark Roberts, Junior_high: Howe Ave. Junior_high_friends: Sue Alexander, Paula Vanderford Memorable_teachers: Jack Carey and Leslie Saladen. Mr Carey gave his students so much love. He was truly interested in his "kids." He also gave us a love for different styles of music, and the joy of working through a difficult piece until you mastered it. It was a joy to be in his class. Mrs. Saladen also gave of her time and energy to make our musicals the best they could be, and help us to do our very best. She wasn't always easy on us, but the results were worth it! Favorite_memory: Madrigals and Musicals. Musicals were the highlight of the year! I loved that three month period of time. They were the best! Madrigals was a tremendous experience. I have used the principles and methods Mr. Carey taught us with my own choir. Madrigals was something I looked forward to every morning at 7:15am! I worked for the Sac County Sheriffs Department for a short time, and then briefly for a phone company. I am now a stay at home parent and do piecework for a small business internet company that is locally owned and operated. Trivia: I have done a lot of growing up. I have discovered that I look better (more mature) with a full beard and have let it grow out. It comes as some surprise top me, that as I got older my hair deepened from blond to red. Kids: Nathan is a great kid (He payed me to say that...) Really I am very proud of him. He started off this school year hating to read and only able to read 5 words in a minute. If anyone from Encina went to Joyce I would love to talk to them... Junior_high: I went to JH in Germany for one year, and Alabama the next. I dont think anybody from Encina was in either school... Memorable_teachers: I remember Mr. John Tracy as one of the best teachers I ever had. He mad an interesting subject even more interesting by showing us how it related to the everyday world around us. I also remember a student teacher by the name of John Desmond for the same reason, if anyone knows where he is, or how to get in touch with him, I would love to hear from him again. With all due apologies to anyone who ever tried to teach me math, despite the fact that I now work with computers, I STILL have yet to find ANY application for algebra in my day to day life.... Favorite_memory: I miss some of the people who graduated ahead of me... Keith Davis, Pat Mulhern etc... I think being the last of the Apaches was a good memory, and I think that Apache pride will still shine forever. MADRIGALS / JACK CAREY I have created a mailing list for former Encina Madrigals, many of whom were students of Jack Carey. You can join the Madrigals mailing list by sending a blank message to: encinamadrigals-subscribe@yahoogroups.com Kathy Cooper 66 wrote: I see Jack Carey, long-time choral music teacher from Encina, every Sunday at our church. He recently lost his address book - and corresponding information about the many, many students with whom he has stayed in touch during all these years. He is asking that folks let him know their current address and phone number so he can reconstruct his address book. Jack does not have a PC or email. If you are interested in being in Jack's address book, please write me at harlan@rambus.com and I will collect the information and get it to Jack Carey. HUMOR >From Slashdot... CORUSCANT -- Presiding over a memorial service commemorating the victims of the attack on the Death Star, the Emperor declared that while recent victories over the Rebel Alliance were "encouraging, the War on Terror is not over yet." "We will continue to fight these terrorists, and the rogue governments who harbor them, until the universe is safe, once and for all, and the security of the Neo-New Cosmik Order ensured." It was one year ago today that the Death Star, perhaps the greatest symbol of the Empire's might, was destroyed in an attack by fanatic Rebels, who used small, single-person crafts to infiltrate seemingly impenetrable defenses. Thousands of mourners were on hand to remember and pay tribute to the victims and their families. "We lost our innocence that day," reflected one mourner. "I guess we thought we were immune from the kind of violence that happens in other galaxies. We were wrong." "I lost hundreds of buddies that day," said one teary-eyed Stormtrooper. "Guys whose only crime was trying make the Universe a safer place." Although the day was colored by sadness, the mourners found some relief in the news of a decisive victory over the Rebels. In an attack led by Darth Vader, Empire forces were able to rout hundreds of Rebels from a network of caves underneath the surface of the planet Hoth. "We're not sure we got them all," says a Vader spokesman. "There are a lot of places to hide in those caves. But we've delivered powerful blow to the terrorist's infrastructure, that's for sure. Today, the Empire has struck back." Initial reports are unclear as to the fate of Luke Skywalker, a hero among the Rebels, who is rumored to have delivered the fatal blow to the Death Star. Skywalker, a former desert-dweller from the planet Tattooine, became a part of the Rebellion after family members were killed. Skywalker was trained by a militant wing of the Rebels, known as "Jedi Knights." Fanatical in their religious beliefs, the Jedi Knights claim to derive their power from the mystical "Force." It's believed that Skywalker was specifically trained by infamous terrorist O bin Wankanobi. Wankanobi, occasionally called "Ben" and easily recognized by his bearded visage and long, flowing robes, achieved near-martyr status among the Rebels after his death last year during a spy mission. His more fervent followers believe that Wankanobi lives on within them today, some even claiming to hear his voice during times of duress. The attack on the Death Star came shortly after the Empire's destruction of Alderstaan, a planet whose government was known to harbor terrorists. Responding to criticism over the total annihilation of the planet, Vader stated, "There is no middle ground in the War on Terror. Those who harbor terrorists are terrorists themselves. Alderaan was issued ample warning. The fight for continuing Freedom is often burdened by terrible cost." The cost of this war can still be seen today in the continuing efforts to build a coalition government on Tattooine. Longstanding animosities among the planets various ethnic groups, including the Jawas, Tusken Raiders and scattered human settlers, have been an impediment to the peace process. The Empire continues to maintain a small peace keeping force until a provisional government is finally in place. Much of the difficulty in fighting the Rebel forces stems from their lack of a central organizing structure. "They don't play by the traditional rules of war," complained one spokesman. "They come in all shapes and sizes, united only by their single-minded desire to destroy the Empire before it destroys them." The Emperor closed his comments today by stating that "the cowardly attack on the Death Star left a deep scar on the Empire. However, we will not stop fighting until every last evildoer has been brought to justice." He paused for several moments, wiping away a tear and then added with determination, "We will never forget." "I wish we could all just get along," said one of the mourners. "But it's hard to offer an olive branch to a cult of religious fanatics whose main tool is violence and who insist on calling us the Dark Side."
