From: "Harlan Lau" Date: Mon Apr 8, 2002 12:10 am Subject: Alumni challenge update (wow) ENCINA ALUMNI, Wow! Pledges this weekend exceeded my expectations...by a lot. Here is a chronology of the recent pledges... March 22: $12.50/alumni point Paul Bonderson '70 makes matching funds offer March 28: $24.50/alumni point + $750 Email blitz of class mailing lists begins. April 1: $28/alumni point + $1000 April 3: $72.75/alumni point + $1425 April 5: $97.25/alumni point + $2165 So Friday noon we were at $97.25 per alumni point with fixed pledges of $2165. Times two. This evening, after lots of pledging on Friday and Saturday, total pledges are: $137.10 per alumni point PLUS $2415 in fixed pledges $ 1 3 7 . 1 0 p e r a l u m n i p o i n t An additional $40 per alumni point!!! Double that with Paul Bonderson's matching funds That is $275 per free throw, $550 per jump shot and $825 for a three pointer. 74 points by the alumni team would raise over $20,000 in point pledges and $4830 in fixed pledges. The mathematicians among you may note that this would require $12415 in matching funds by Paul Bonderson '70 and he had set a maximum of $10,000. Not a problem... Paul saw my note last Friday that at the rate we are going, we had a reasonable chance of hitting his $10,000 maximum pledge depending on the alumni score. Paul wrote "Glad to see the matching funds are helping. Let's raise the bar, I'll go to match up to $15k". $15,000. I'm speechless. Well, not speechless but you get the point. Now it's up to us to make enough pledges to reach Paul's maximum of $15,000 in matching funds. To do this we need the total point pledges plus fixed pledges to reach $30,000. About $5000 to go. GRANDFATHER OF ALL PLEDGES Well I already have the mother of all pledges from Paul Bonderson '70. So what to call the amazingly generous pledge I received from a 61 alumni, 61 being the first graduating class... This class of 61 alumni, who wishes to remain anonymous, has pledged $5 for every $1 pledged by alumni from the class of 61. So if they pledge $25, they will be matched by $125 for a total pledge of $150. Double that with Paul's matching funds and your $25 pledge is multiplied by 12x and becomes a $300 pledge. Where else can you get such a return on your investment? 12X A $1/alumni point pledge effectively becomes a $6/pt and then $12/alumni point pledge. This pledge inspired the class of 61 to open their checkbooks and is the primary reason we shot up to $137.10/alumni point this weekend. Unfortunately, this offer only applies to the class of 61. I hope more 61 alumni will take advantage of the incredibly leverage this generous offer affords. Even a small pledge of $10 is magnified into a $120 pledge. And $100 becomes $1200! Thank you very much to our anonymous pledger from 61 ! PLEDGES FOR OTHERS Several alumni have come up with what I thought were very special pledges for other alumni. Karl Schnaidt 91 wrote: I want to raise my pledge once more in my father's memory Kenneth Schnaidt class of 61. I lost him May of last year. My pledge is now $20 per point. I will see you at the game. Patricia Henley 72 wrote: All right, put me down for $1 per alumni point (although if the score is a runaway I may need Rene's payment plan, since small-town journalism isn't exactly lucrative). But I'd like this recorded as a donation in memory of my brother Tom Henley, class of 1970. Please list it as a memorial in his name, for his class year, rather than giving credit to 1972. Tom died of heart failure in 1999 at age 46 -- no warning, just went back to bed in the morning because he was still tired and out of breath and he didn't wake up again. He was totally peaceful -- no signs of pain or struggle. So for all of you who have lost someone, or remember someone from years gone by, how about pledging to help Encina students, as a sort of memorial? As we age, the number of people "permanently missing" from our ranks grows much too fast. So let's pledge to life and to the future that Encina's students represent, in memory of those we will never see again. Lynn Rose '80 made her $1/alumni point pledge in the name of beloved teacher Jack Carey, who has touched so many lives. Jack is still with us by the way. Don't want to give anyone the wrong impression. Do you have someone you would like to make a pledge for? RUMINATIONS The Alumni Challenge is a pretty amazing event. I'm sure many of you have told your friends, family and coworkers about it. About how YOUR high school has alumni who are fielding an alumni team of old guys against a varsity basketball team who went to the finals for their division. A final which was played in the ARCO ARENA. About how YOUR high school has a website and weekly newsletter. About how YOUR high school has an annual homecoming party where the alumni participate in the homecoming parade and even have their own float. About how YOUR high school has alumni who have pledged over $275 for each point the alumni team scores. And when they ask you which high school and you tell them ENCINA, are you not just a little bit proud of YOUR old alma mater. Do you not get some quiet satisfication for going to a school whose alumni have such fond memories that they will make such an event possible. Are not your friends a little bit envious of you and YOUR school? And when they ask you whether you intend to go, whether you pledged any money, whether YOU are participating, can you say YES? Or do you say mumble mumble and make some excuse about how in spite of how cool the alumni challenge is, you have something better to do. That you are only really interested in your class and your old classmates. That you have just not gotten around to chipping in and supporting YOUR old school. Wouldn't you rather say, oh yeah, I'm in for a $1 a point, I sent in $50, I'm going to the game, I'm playing in the alumni band, I'm going with a group of my old classmates. Think how cool that would be. How cool it will be. This is the second alumni challenge and I and hope there will be a third. But nothing in life is certain. Don't assume there'll always be a next year. Be a participant, not a spectator. Be there when the alumni upsets the varsity team this Friday. We are at $137.10 per alumni point. Who'll put us over the $150.00 per alumni point threshold ? Who'll play in the alumni pep band.? Who'll be at the game to cheer on the alumni team.? If it's not you, who will it be? ALUMNI CHALLENGE BAND One area where we have not been successful is recruiting an alumni band for this year's challenge. Where are all the great musicians that Encina's music program produced over the last 40 years? We need the involvement of just a few folks with the connections to recruit their musical buddies. Times running out. Yon Gomez '81 wrote: We need participants for the pep band @ the Alumni Challenge! If you know musicians from other classes, forward this to them! Where are the "Bell Street House Wreckers"? It's getting late and drums alone will not make a very musical pep band! If you put the word out to all the classes, I will be a contact person, and I'll even try to put this thing together! So, you put out the word and I'll wait to hear from all those great former Encina musicians who want to impress their children. Tell them to break out the brass polish and soak their reeds we have music to play!!!! Yon '81 yonzeno@hotmail.com ALUMNI CHALLENGE PLEDGES *** UPDATE *** Here are the recent pledges. We were at $97.25 per alumni point when I sent out the last update. $97.25 Jason Alexander '92 wrote: I'll pledge $2.75 per alumni point to get us to the $100.00 plateau. $100.00 !!! Ken Lambert '70 wrote: Would you like a job selling computers for me? I just took over a company called NIC Inc. (see www.thinknic.com) and I think you'd be perfect since you are the best sales guy I know ...I swore last year I wouldn't contribute again to the Alumni Challenge since I sent some money in and never got a receipt or acknowledgment. For all I know, the "Alumni Fund" could be a narco-trafficing front for the class of '70, which would be about right... But you have prevailed. Put me down for a $1 per point (and send me a receipt please...). Good luck Alumni. Anyone from class of '70 playing? Collentine, will you and Reddick be cheerleading? Best to all. Heide Mathews Boull't 78 wrote: Although I cannot attend the festivities next week, I would like to pledge a flat $100.00 to the Alumni Challenge. Your efforts have sure been impressive! You Go "old guys!" $101.00 Larry Averitt '95 informed me that his pledge is $1 per point (varsity or alumni) with a minimum of $150. I will treat this as approximately $2/alumni pt. $102.00 Linda Weatherford Ballance 62 wrote: You certainly have a knack for inspiring the Alumni (me included). Please put me down for $1.00 per alumni point. I suppose to make it more interesting I really should attend the game and dinner. Please reserve two (2) tickets (did I manage to get in before the price went up?........smile). I look forward to seeing you at the game. Once again, thank you for all your hard work. Renee Welch Wojnowski 72 wrote: Okay, what ever happened to our class cheer? Who's the best we'll give you a clue it's the class of 72! Tim & Van & I are the ONLY ones investing in this game? Ladies, I'm out here all alone, (granted I'm in great company, but I'm still the only female!) Ladies please if I can give 50 cents a point I know some of you can do a dime a point! Please! In the name of liberation & equality. Heck, where are the rest of the guys? I am looking at the 72 yearbook & the following people are pictured with the basketball team: Tom Wickham, Chuck Watts, Mike Huber, Mark Elmer, Mike Babayco, Dave Jensen, Mike Greene, Mike Paterson, Steve Cook, Larry Fahn, Bob Greer. I think the former varsity team needs to get involved. $103.00 Teresa Gunn Davis 78 wrote: Looking forward to next Friday night's game! Can I make a flat pledge of $50 instead of per point? Do you want some entertainment during half-time? Cook(s)? Kanner? Columbero? Friedlander? Lee? to list just a few.... I cannot make it to the game, but GO APACHES!! Hope all have a great time! $108.00 Dave Robinson '79 wrote: So that's how it is going to be, a pissing battle over the internet? I seem to remember something about a dry land encore performance of the Encina synchronized swimming team. Oh, and a Lynn Rose re-enactment of "Summer Lovin' - cheerleading outfit - right! You are going to have to do better than that, nothing in this life comes for free, so put up or shut up. Maybe for a couple of C notes and a revival of your Mangione "Feels So Good" swim! And while we are on the subject, throwing down the JC bone was a nice touch, however the "Out of town" crack was way out of line. Put me down for 1 dollar and a dime per point, just so I can beat Lynn Rose. Unlike Ms. "high and mighty" President GMarie group I am merely a humble public school music teacher who spends his days like all the rest of the outstanding educators, disarming students and writing referrals. I am still waiting to hear from some of my other cheap @#% classmates. DAVE (P.S. I'm out. $108.10 Georgianna Wooley Marie '80 wrote back: If you're going to engage in a pissing contest, internet or not, at least get your facts straight: I never did a Chuck Mangione routine - that was Carolyn Armstrong. Maybe you can harass her to take the spotlight off the fact that you are weaseling out of an opportunity to earn an additional $50 for your alma mater, simply by wearing a little cheerleading outfit. And, let's talk about challenge etiquette. When presented a challenge (i.e., wear a cheerleading outfit) the proper response is to either accept or reject the challenge, not meet it with another. We can talk about how much money you are willing to donate if I (fill in the blank) AFTER you agree to earn that $50 with the cheerleading-outfit-appearance. Until then, I will not respond to any of your lame attempts to deflect the attention you so deserve. As for the "high and mighty" comment, well...what can I say? I was voted "Most Likely to be the First Woman President." I had to fulfill that in some way... So...whaddya say to that cheerleading outfit challenge? Accept it, then issue your own...or not. GMarie Lynn Rose '80 wrote: Hey - I'll add an additional $25 to George's pledge to have David Robinson in a cheerleading outfit - anyone else out there want to chip in? (Just gotta make sure Harlan posts a pic from the event on the website, right?) We could raise some serious cash if we can convince Mr Robinson to honor his alma mater in this way. C'mon classmates - lets go! Tom had been to see a doctor just the week before -- but the real problem was overlooked. Rene -- hang in their with the battle against depression, knowing none of us is alone in our problems, although when things are dark we always think we are. So let's pledge to life and to the future that Encina's students represent, in memory of those we will never see again. $109.10 Gregg Magaziner 74 wrote: OK. I've decided to RSVP, since last year was so great.....and I save $5 by doing so. I've also decided to pledge $1/alumni point, because the alumni need the extra motivation to score. But ya know, we shouldn't let the current students just sit back and soak up the money. They should earn some, too. So to motivate them to score, I will also pledge $0.50/varsity point. I think this is a first; actual financial backing of the varsity team. I know it's only half what I pledged for the alumni, but the students are only half the age, except in Goosman's case, where the students are only a third the age (wait, I'm older than he is - never mind.) Anyway, I'm sure the alumni aren't savvy enough to allow the varsity guys to score more points just to increase the donation. I know I would never think of it. Last year we received pledges totaling $250.00 per point scored by the alumni team (total points scored was 74). Please consider sponsoring this year's team with a per-point pledge. Also funds raised will be used to support very worthwhile Encina projects and programs. POST-GAME PARTY, 9 p.m.-11 p.m. Coffee and socializing in the cafeteria with background music from the 60s, 70s and 80s. COST Before April 5, $20 per person ($10 for children under 10) April 5 and later, $25 per person ($12.50 children under 10) For more information or to volunteer to help, please contact Steve Palmer '74 at 530-676-2775 or spalmer@innotek.com, or Bob Goosmann '74 at magusbob@hotmail.com.
