Date: Thu Jan 17, 2002 1:29 pm Subject: Encina Update (patitucci/challenge/baseball/huber/reunions/gallery/meredith/siblings/kost/bios/obituaries/website/humor/whats new) ENCINA ALUMNI, There is no sponsor for this week's update 8^( JOE PATITUCCI I received this sad news about former Encina teacher Joe Patitucci from classmate Dawn James '73: It is with great sorrow that I let you know that Joe Patitucci died this morning (Sunday, January 13, 2002) at around 9:30 a.m. The family is planning on having the service at the St. Francis (where Joe actually went to school and met Lucille at a school function) with some type of gathering following the service. I will let you know further details as they become available. Dawn James '73 Followup... The service will be at the St. Francis downtown. Joe went to school there and believe it or not went to the seminary school there to possibly enter priesthood. He also met Lucille there at a school function so it has lots of memories. There will be some type of gathering or reception following at some other location. Joe made the decision to be cremated so the family has decided to take their time to decide location and when. They really want to honor Joe and make a very special occasion. Finding a hall to have the reception has been difficult with timing it around a wake. At this time it looks like it will be towards the end of February. It will not be on a Saturday or Sunday as the St. Francis will not permit it. So to answer your question, at this time I do not yet know the actual date and time. I will let you know soon. Dawn ALUMNI CHALLENGE Encina Alumni Challenge 2002 Friday, April 12, 2002 4:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. Remember last year's Alumni Challenge? Our alumni basketball team almost beat the Encina Varsity team in a close and exciting game. We raised over $20,000 for Encina programs, had a great dinner, enjoyed a wonderful Alumni Band and saw old friends and the campus. If you missed it, you really missed out! The Second Annual Alumni Challenge will be even bigger and better with a rematch of the Alumni and Varsity teams, great prizes, an even better meal, and more fun! More details will follow soon, but clear your calendar for April 12 and come join us. Our goal is to raise more money and have more fun than we did at last year's event. For more information or to volunteer to help, please contact Steve Palmer '74 at 530-676-2775 or spalmer@innotek.com, or Bob Goosmann '74 at magusbob@hotmail.com. For details about the Alumni Challenge 2002: http://www.encinahighschool.com/homecoming/challenge02.htm Last year pledges totalled $250 for each point the alumni team scored. I'll start things off with a pledge of $1 per alumni point! BASEBALL FIELD Encina could use some help leveling the baseball field. If you have access to heavy equipment please help! Hi Steve, Thanks for coming over the other night! Thanks also for the alumni challenge notice going out. Also, Coach Kargl (baseball) asked if there were any alum who could/would help with the field. He has new dirt that needs to level the field, and he needs someone(s) who might have equipment to help do so. Otherwise, they are going to have to use wheelbarrows and make many trips. I don't know how they will level it though. Could you put word out to alumn? His number is the same as Coach Hibbard's - 971-7557 - or his voice mail is 971-5360, ext. 4807. Thanks Steve! Becky Hurley LOU HUBER Sent: Tuesday, January 15, 2002 7:25 PM Subject: 1/15/02 - WE DID IT!!!!! Great news everyone! Today we got dressed for OT and changed rooms. We are in room #575 - where the nurses will approach Dad from his left (forcing more recognition and use of his left side) and allows for a "right transfer" onto the commode (Dad can help the nurses at night more). They were going to put him near the main duty station - however that would also be closer to a kid with a head injury and an attitude (intermittent screaming and tantrums). So before I nixed the room change - we found one farther away, quieter, yet with left approach and right transfer! I am hoping this room is more conducive to sleeping. If you haven't already inferred that Dad is staying in the Providence Hospital on the rehabilitaion floor then I will tell you - DAD IS STAYING - WE MADE IT!!! Dr. Denny says that the therapists want him for 4 weeks (I do not know if this includes the week we just finished or not). The keeper was his sitting balance progress from 0 to 1 minute. Assuming continued progress he will be at Providence Hospital awhile longer. I believe this will take him through the 1st or 2nd week of February. This also means that Michele, Mike, Jack, and I need to have a confab - sooner rather than later - to discuss the next transition. So many variables and what ifs involved?! Morning rehab went well - the therapists want to start making him sitting up in his wheelchair after therapy - gradually increasing his up time. I made him drag his a-- from the gym to his new room the long way through the dining room, etc...Dr. Denny ran into us and was impressed with our fortitude... Don't tell Dad - I made several phone calls and am planning a surprise 76th birthday party for Dad in the rehab dining room at 7pm this Thursday 1/17. You guys are all invited - no rsvp necessary. I currently have Gary and his family (5), Exercise specialist from YMCA who resusciated Dad and her husband (2), McDonald's buddies (2), Jack, and I. That makes 11 attendees with the church sending out a mass invite, the YMCA posting a flyer, and the people working with Dad currently still to respond... More good news - I have given Dad the best possible opportunity for recovery - it is now in his and God's hands - I have given my all and must return home!!! I miss Judy, Katie, Kelly, Lady, Midnight, and the fish terribly!! and I know that they miss me. My flight leaves Sunday 1/20 and I arrive home around 4pm 1/21. I will continue to update you until I depart - after that Jack will taking over to keep us all up to date... I met Kandace at last year's homecoming party. ENCINA STAFF PROFILES: Kandace-Kost Herbert Kandace's mother, Mary Lu is also a native Californian. Her great grandfather arrived in January 1850; he missed being called a 49er by a few days. His son was a graduate of Berkeley and was there during the "Great fire." Mary Lu's great grandmother was a free- wheeling woman who received free passes on the Wells Fargo train and coach and would travel all over the U.S. One story was when Mary was 26 she was going to marry the rich English landowner's 2nd son who, at the time was living with modest means. (The 1st son is the only one who could inherit the property.) The first son died and they were on their way to England by way of New York and at the port as they were to embark, he said that she would have to mend her wild ways and act like a lady of gentry. She took off, got on a Wells Fargo coach using her free pass and went back to San Francisco. About 2 1/2 years later, he came looking for her and she would not talk to him. Mary Lu was a 1st grade teacher at Vineland and Dry Creek Schools in Rio Linda. She was a pioneer teacher for dyslexia in children. She was President of the Association for Neurologically Handicapped Children. Mary published a book on dyslexia. Lady Bird Johnson was one of her guest speakers for her organization. Kandace thinks of her mother as being highly organized and very, very, very dedicated to working with children with learning disabilities. Mary Lu was also runner up California teacher of the year in 1978. Both of Kandace's parents are retired and having a great life. Kandace has one sister Mary Ann who lives near Eureka and works taking care of the elderly. Mary Ann was in the 1st graduating class of Mira Loma. She is an incredible strong- willed person. Kandace went to Vineland and Dyer Kelly Elementary Schools. Her favorite teacher was Mr. Crutcher at Howe School. He taught math and would read the stories by Edgar Allan Poe to the class. "The Telltale Heart" was one of her favorites. Kandace went to Encina High School during the hippie years. She remembers that girls were not allowed to wear pants, and only dresses and skirts. Girls could not participate in industrial classes. Fighting for one's rights was in vogue at this time; the girls united and sought change. They petitioned and protested this discrimination and won the right to wear pants (they had to be long) and a special class for girls' auto shop. The school board approved both classes. In fact the Auto Shop, teacher Orin Schuler, said the girls were much better than the boys because most boys took the class to impress the girls and the girls took the class for content. Kandace was a normal student, not really involved in too much, going to games and dances. She dated a lot. There were a lot of good-looking guys. Kandace remembers cruising "K" street with her best friend, Karen, and they met two boys who talked them into going to the levy to drink some red mountain hooch. They had one glass, got scared, and left. Later, they found out that the boys had gotten into an auto accident. One of the boys was in the hospital for a week. Everything turned out OK; however, she learned a very valuable lesson Kandace went to America River College for 2 1/2 years and took general studies. Her favorite teacher was Bruce Swineheart who taught biology courses. He had a hobby of collecting animal skulls and furs. He would give extra credit if you brought carcasses of dead animals in and he used domesticated beetles to eat off the flesh of the animals. He made biology glow because he would test you on what you knew. She met this HUNK Mel Nicolai and married him at age 21. It was a fun marriage for a while, but he had a hard time keeping a job. They both mutually agreed that marriage was not in their best interest. It lasted for 5 years. After American River, she went to UCD as Zoology major, specializing in cold-blooded vertebrates (fish, frogs, snakes, lizards). Dr. Jameson was her favorite teacher because he would use the Socratic method of teaching (never giving you the answer you would have to figure it out). She took four classes from him and learned to say Gecko, when no one knew the answer. One interesting job she had was researching skunks. Employed by Imperial County, she worked with two Yakima Indian animal wardens, Su and his uncle. They were so skilled at trapping skunks that they changed the skunks' denning habits. While working at a tuna cannery as a Quality Assurance technician, she met her present husband Jim Herbert. It was an interesting courtship because a lengthy secret investigation about him took place. Finally, her good friend had had enough and went up to him and asked him all the questions she wanted: "Are you married?" "Do you have a girlfriend?" "Are you looking?" Of course he was flabbergasted and she should have been embarrassed, but she was not. Dating was difficult because they both worked different shifts. "He called once and he hasn't been able to get rid of me since." 23 years of bliss. They have one son Aidan "Greatest". He was an avid Karate student and he achieved a black belt at the age 14. He is 22 and a graduate from Woodcreek High School, a Sergeant in the Army and was 2nd in his sergeant graduating class in the army. He fought in Bosnia and was also stationed in Germany. He is currently attending Sierra College. Kandace has many hobbies, which include 5 horses, two dogs and a cat. They love to ride along trails, camping, and gardening. Her garden focus is native plants. Kandace worked for many food processors as a supervisor for quality control: Chicken of the Sea, Chef Boyardee, Sun Sweet, and Hunts, for 18 years before interviewing with Myrtle Berry and Don Brodnansky for the science job at Encina. Kandace really likes Encina and the students. It is a very demanding job and she would like it no other way. Kandace's advice to students is, "Your high school years are more important than you think. Put energy into everything you do and you will be rewarded." Stephen Gatewood Vice Principal. Encina BIOS KRISTINE MONDAY 87 Occupation: Esthetician/Home Mom Bio: I worked for several places, but settled in for about 6 years at Kaiser as an outside service copying medical records. I hated it and have been at home since my son turned one in 1999. I am now getting back into my first love which is doing facials and waxing and make-up at a small salon. Hobbies: I still play a lot of softball and indoor soccer. Kids: Jerry and I just had our 2nd child a girl named Jocelyn Jaiden in August of 2001. Our son Joel was born in February of 1998. Can't believe we have a four year old. We have big kids. Our daughter was 9.4 lbs. at birth and is now 21 lbs. at 4 1/2 months. Joel was just a little under that at four months, but you see what I mean about having big kids. They are a lot of work, but very worth it. Story: Jerry Dragoo and I are still happily married and live in the same house on Barrington Rd. We own our own Pool business and it is doing very well. This April we will have been together 16 years that is half of our lives together. We just had our 11th anniversary last October. Jerry is still one of the greatest people I know and I am so glad that he is in my life. WEBSITE For those of you who have your own websites, bigtracker.com will provide free web statistics. Normally you need expensive software to analyze the website log files to provide this statistical information. If you register with bigtracker, they provide some html that you add to your webpages which allows them to gather statistics. You can view these statistics at the bigtracker website. I've added bigtracker to most of the Encina pages and the statistics it provides are fascinating. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the website averages about 100 unique visitors a day! Other interesting statistics: about 90% of the visitors are using Internet Explorer almost half use a screen size of 800x600 (SVGA) about 25% use a screen size of 1024x768 (XGA) only about 3-4% use Macs about 95% have Java enabled Highly recommended. No matter how legitimate my illness, I always sense my boss thinks I am lying. On one occasion, I had a valid reason, but lied anyway because the truth was too humiliating. I simply mentioned that I had sustained a head injury and I hoped I would feel up to coming in the next day. By then, I could think up a doozy to explain the bandage on my crown. The accident occurred mainly because I conceded to my wife's wishes to adopt a cute little kitty. Initially, the new acquisition was no problem, but one morning, I was taking my shower after breakfast, when I heard my wife, Deb, call out to me from the kitchen. "Ed! The garbage disposal is dead. Come reset it." "You know where the button is," I protested through the shower(pitter-patter). "Reset it yourself!" "I am scared!" she pleaded. "What if it starts going and sucks me in?" (Pause) "C'mon, it'll only take a second." So out I came, dripping wet and buck naked, hoping to make a statement about how her cowardly behavior was not without consequence. I crouched down and stuck my head under the sink to find the button. It is the last action I remember performing. It struck without warning, without respect to my circumstances. Nay, it wasn't a hexed disposal drawing me into its gnashing metal teeth. It was our new kitty, clawing playfully at the dangling objects she spied between my legs. She had been poised around the corner and stalked me as I took the bait under the sink. At precisely the second I was most vulnerable, she leapt at the toys I unwittingly offered and snagged them with her needle-like claws. I lost all rational thought to control orderly bodily movements, while rising upwardly at a violent rate of speed, with the full weight of a kitten hanging from my masculine region. Wild animals are sometimes faced with a "fight or flight" syndrome. Men, in this predicament, choose only the "flight" option. Fleeing straight up, the sink and cabinet bluntly impeded my ascent; the impact knocked me out cold. When I awoke, my wife and the paramedics stood over me. Having been fully briefed by my wife, the paramedics snorted as they tried to conduct their work while suppressing hysterical laughter. At the office, colleagues tried to coax an explanation out of me. I kept silent, claiming it was too painful to talk about. "What's the matter, cat got your tongue?" If they had only known. Hotel For Women Only A group of girlfriends went on vacation and saw a five-story hotel with a sign that read FOR WOMEN ONLY. Since they were there without their boyfriends, they decided to go in. The doorman, a very attractive man, explained to them how it worked: "We have 5 floors. Go up floor by floor, and once you find what you are looking for, you can stay there. It's easy to decide, since each floor has signs telling you what's inside. The only rule is, once you leave a floor, you can't return to it." The women talk it over and decide to go for it... They start going up, and on the First floor the sign reads: ALL THE MEN HERE ARE HORRIBLE LOVERS, BUT THEY ARE SENSITIVE AND KIND. The friends laugh and without hesitation move on to the next floor... The sign on the Second floor reads: ALL THE MEN HERE ARE WONDERFUL LOVERS, BUT THEY GENERALLY TREAT WOMEN BADLY. This wasn't going to do, so again they head for the stairs. The friends move up to the Third floor where the sign reads: ALL THE MEN HERE ARE GREAT LOVERS AND SENSITIVE TO THE NEEDS OF WOMEN. This was good but there were still two more floors... On the Fourth floor, the sign was perfect: ALL THE MEN HERE HAVE PERFECT BUILDS; ARE SENSITIVE AND ATTENTIVE TO WOMEN; ARE PERFECT LOVERS; THEY ARE ALSO SINGLE, RICH, AND STRAIGHT. The women seemed pleased but they decided that they would rather see what the Fifth floor has to offer. When they reach the Fifth floor, there is only a sign that reads: THERE ARE NO MEN HERE!
