Date: Fri Nov 2, 2001 4:52 pm Subject: Encina Update (virus/football/homecoming/62/80/vietnam/philbin/twitty/siblings/rea/bios/obituaries/whats new) ENCINA ALUMNI, There is no sponsor for this weeks update. VIRUS This week I've received what appear to be virus email from about ten different alumni. This particular virus mails a random file to the folks in your address book. I strongly recommend that those alumni whom I warned, install an antivirus program and disinfect their PC right away. They should also disconnect their PC from the internet until their PC is disinfected. Not only are you mailing personal files to friends, but you may infect their PC too. In general, don't open email attachments without scanning them with an antivirus program. If you receive a strange message from a friend, let them know. You won't realize your PC has this particular virus (unless you have a virus checker) if someone doesn't tell you. FOOTBALL For those of you interested in how Encina's football team is doing, they are now 4-2-1, with a tough game against conference leader Colfax tonight. Date Team Results Opponent's record September 7: Mira Loma W 54-20 (0-8-0) September 14: Oroville T 22-22 September 28: Highlands W 42-18 (4-4-0) October 5: Lindhurst W 44-3 (1-7-0) conference October 12: Mesa Verde L 0-27 (3-6-0) conference October 19: San Juan W 28-20 (2-6-0) conference October 26: Golden Sierra L 14-20 (4-4-0) conference November 2: Colfax (7-1-0) conference November 9: Union Mine (4-3-1) conference Unfortunately, Mesa Verde and Golden Sierra were Golden Empire League conference games so the Bulldogs are 2-2-0 in their conference with two conference games to go. They are third behind Colfax and Golden Sierra. My college team is doing better. Stanford was #6 in the BCS poll this week after defeating top 5 teams Oregon and UCLA back to back. Stanford faces another top 20 team Washington in Seattle in an untelevised game on Saturday. I actually had free tickets to the Stanford/UCLA game last weekend but couldn't go due to kids' sports. Sigh... With apologies to those of you Washington residents and alumni, Go Stanford! HOMECOMING 2001 If you pledged for the homecoming game, I would appreciate it if you would send in your pledge. Thanks! We still need help identifying the alumni in photo 522: http://www.encinahighschool.com/homecoming/homecoming2001/game.htm Information and pictures for Homecoming 2001 are here: http://www.encinahighschool.com/homecoming/homecoming2001.htm CLASS OF 62 Alice Braio Bogert 62 wrote: the reunion committee meeting has been RE-SCHEDULED from Thurs. I can give you a little more info on Richard Philbin. He was a ward of my parents, from the age of seven, and will be forever our brother. (Yes they actually did those kind of things back then.) He also was a member of the Screaming Eagles of the 101st Airborne. The 101st were the first large group of soldiers sent to Viet Nam. He was killed near Tuy Hoa while on routine patrol. He was killed by three shots from a thirteen year old sniper. He did not suffer. He had been previously wounded some months earlier when someone near him stepped on a land mine and he was hit in the bum by the shrapnel. He spent a few weeks laying on his stomach in the hospital. He was the closest in age to me, Dennis Bright '63 was one year older and our other two brothers Ronald Bright (El Camino class of '58?) and Laurie Bright (El Camino class of '60?), were already in college when I grew up. If some of his friends want to know more, they may contact me anytime" DAN TWITTY 67 Bill Boswell 67 wrote: " Two weeks ago my wife and I visited Washington D.C. and the Vietnam Wall for the first time. Upon arriving at the wall, I went over to the register book and looked up Dan Twitty, who was a classmate of mine (1967). His name is listed on block 48E, line 36 of this beautiful, black granite memorial. I found his name and just starred at it, shaking my head, asking the age old question of why this had to happen. I then gently touched his name, letter by letter, and said a prayer for him all the other fallen young men who are listed on the wall. The following story will explain why Dan Twitty was such a special human being to me. One night in February of 1965, I was physically assaulted while on my way to basketball practice in front of Jonas Salk school. The following day I went back to Encina with a bandage over my broken nose. A couple of days later, Dan Twitty came up to me and asked who beat me up and I told him it was a group of kids from Rio Americano High School. The next day Dan came up to me again and said he confronted those who assualted me and he told them to leave kids alone who go to Encina. I didn't know Dan Twitty very well, but the fact that he stood up for me and the rest of his classmates against a group of punks showed what a special young man he was. I am also a Vietnam Veteran (1969 -1970 Tan Son Nhut Air Base) so Dan Twitty and all the other young servicemen who gave their lives for their country have a special place in my heart. For those of you planning to visit Washington D.C. please take time and visit the Vietnam Memorial. Copy the list of Encina boys killed in action that Kathie Kloss recently compiled. Find their names on the wall and touch their letters. It will change you forever. Bill Boswell" Steve Erickson 67 wrote: "Hi Harlan and Hi Bill. I just read the tribute to Dan Twitty, class of 67. I just wanted to tell you that I too found Dan's name on the wall a few years ago. It's a heart wrenching expirence to visit this wall. I find it incredible how so many people file past and how humbly silent and reverent they are as they realize the enormity of fifty thousand lives sacrificed. My dad was Dan's parents mail carrier. He told me that Dan was killed on the last day of the seige of Khe Sanh. The marines had held out for months. The army was sent to rescue them. By the time they linked up, most of the Viet Cong and NVA troops were gone. One mortar shell landed that day. Unfortunately for Dan and all who knew him, this lone mortar shell took his life. Look on page 76 and there is a one page article about our group with our picture. Luckily, that was many pounds ago. It was taken at the beginning of June.
