Actually, I had a very enjoyable, challenging, and successful carreer. After retiring in 1992, I went to college (Old Dominion University) and received my B.S. and intended on being a high school Earth Science teacher. Student teaching my final semester made me think of other aspects of my life, so I returned to school, learned computer sciences, and am now teaching at the community college campus five minutes from home. I was married for the first time in the late sixty's, got the opportunity to give it another chance (she neede to be near Mommy), and have been married to the same wonderful woman for 28 years. Friends: Friends from the past: Mike Alberti - we ran into each other at a Bob Hope Show in Viet Nam in '68; RB Hanshaw - we've known each other since the fifth grade, I lost contact with him after joining the navy, his folks said he'd joined, he moved, they moved, and now I see he is listed and will renew acquaintances; Rick Thomas - I've looked for Rick but can't locate him; Judy Yates - Judy was one of the most recent contacts, but I would still like to hear from her; and Heidi Hess - a 'wild and crazy' woman who always made me feel special. Hobbies: "Honey-Does", baseball - spectator and booster club (love those road trips)! Kids: Jennifer - living at home for the third time, working full time and going to college full time (she neede some "real life" experience before appreciating the need for college). Single - never been married, close several times, but opened her eyes. Grade_school: Cottage School Grade_school_friends: Mike Alberti; RB Hanshaw; Rick Thomas;Jack Goodman (class of 66) Junior_high: In the initial class at Jonas Salk Junior High School Junior_high_friends: Jim Eakons, & the guys listed above Memorable_teachers: Mr. Farmer (Music) he got me started on clarinet at Cottage School, recruited me for Baritone Sax at "the new school," and followed me to Encina. Mrs. Newman - another teacher that I had at two schools, Mr. Psias - French, made you want to learn and enjoy, wjith a good sense of humor; Mr. Figenshu - Biology, even though botany made me repeat a semester, I really enjoyed his style of teaching, and class seating arrangements. Mr. Bassett - I can't think of any classmates that had a bad experience with Mr. B, he was always open, fair, and very easy going. He had a look that would make you think twice before crossing him. His leadership style helped me alot in my naval carreer. AMANDA HARVEY 91 Occupation: house wife and mother Bio: I left Encina in December of 1990 for Washington state. Where I got my GED and started collage. From ther I went home to England for a few years where I had my first of 3 boys. I left there to come back to the SUN and have a second boy. I ran an apartment complex for sometime where I met the love of my life. We married and had our 3rd and FINAL boy.And not I take care of my family from home. Friends: My best friends were Terri Wilson (still is) Micheal James Hughes(gone to heaven) Tracy Taylor Tolbert(email) Tammy Myers and Michelle Harvey Andersent( speaking again) Lost is Gina Hunter and Jeff Garenger is the only one I can think of off the top of my head. Favorite_memory: Gooffing off with campus life. Getting the chance to met and love Mike Hughes(angel) and Terri Wilson who tought me how to love other s and myself and gave me the grace to care for my wonderfull family. Story: everyday was an interesting story at Encina. Just remember the good with the bad and let them make you stronger. One bit of advice I have...is tell those you love that you love them all the time. Forgive those you have a problem with tomarrow may never come. Peace to you all! Alumni_in_contact: Terri Wilsom and Tammy Myers PATRICK GLASS 95 Occupation: Floor Manager for a document conversion company. Bio: Up until recently, not much worth mentioning. Then again, more than I'd care to mention would be more adequate. By way of recent history, I've been working, going to school, and dealing with the typical life of a good ol' disabled ex-hockey player. Such is life. Trivia: "Interesting" trivia? Well... How about this. I'll just have to skip this one for now, and when I CAN think of something which would be described as "interesting", I'll type it in here at that time. (Being that I won't be submitting a SECOND bio... Guess that answers THIS one!) Friends: Larry A., Jeremy M., Bonnie B., Mike E., Rhett T., Eddey C., as well as a few others. And, to list those that I have lost contact with... "Larry A., Jeremy M., Bonnie B., Mike E., Rhett T. Eddey C., as well as a few others". *shrugs* Hobbies: I've lost the ability to participate in any of the hobbies that would be worth listing. Though, I have started playing the guitar since my accident, which does allow me some room to call it a form of recreation, also. Kids: Kids? HA! I could not even IMAGINE having any little circus clowns running around that would be even REMOTELY like me! So, uh... Nothing I can really say about my kids. Grade_school: D. W. Babcock Elementary School. Grade_school_friends: Richard S., Jeanne G., Eddey C., Rhett T, David B... I think that was about all o' those that attended both elementary school and high school with me. Then again, my memory has failed me countless times in the past, so don't put too much weight into the completion of that answer. Junior_high: Martin Luther King Jr. Jr. High School. Junior_high_friends: *scratches temple* Ummm... Some o' the same folks, and some different. Can't for the life of me think o' those that I went to MLK with, that also went to EHS. Memorable_teachers: Mr. McElroy, simply because he rocked. I can't think of a better teacher, past OR present, that could possibly improve in the aspects of teaching that he had already perfected. Also, Mr. Kirrene, for being one of the best people to fill the role of a teacher that I've ever had the pleasure of studying under. Favorite_memory: Quite a few to list, though I sure didn't seem to be much of the sort to make "favourite memories" while attending EHS. Too bad it took the completion of high school and a few years afterwards for me to bust outta my shell. This list could have been interesting, had I done so beforehand. Story: *shakes his head* I've lost contact with all of those that I knew in high school, whether they be students or teachers. So, the answer to this particular question is rather simple. "No." Sibling_info: Kristofer Glass. Heard_about_website_from: Surfed on in. Grade_school_friends: Not many of my friends from grade school attentended Encina but I knew Shawne Staples in grade school and two people who currently attend Encina from my grade school include Abigail Baggs and Trang Tan Junior_high: Jonas Salk and Starr King Memorable_teachers: Most memorable teachers would have to be Mrs. Begg and Mr. Boyd. Sacramento Bee, February 3, 1971 Cancer Kills Woman Who Aided Invalids Pauline M. de Gooyer who, despite knowing she had terminal cancer waged a campaign on behalf of other invalids, died last night in her home. She was 52. Cancer plagued her for three and a half years but it was not until last March that she was forced to give up teaching at Encina High School and was hospitalized for the last time. She came home in April her husband, Marvin said, because she wanted to be in familiar surroundings when she died. Mrs. de Gooyer continued from her home the drive she had started shortly after her last hospitalization -- collecting coupons to obtain a kidney machine. Her efforts accounted for more than 200,000 of the 600,000 coupons needed for the complicated apparatus. Her 11 years of teaching English and public speaking at Encina earned her a life membership in the California Congress of Parents and Teachers. Encina students, impressed with her as a teacher and an individual, have dedicated their 1971 school year book in her honor. The family came to Sacramento 14 years ago from Houston, Tex., where, although she did not teach, Mrs. de Gooyer also earned a life membership in the state parent-teacher organization. The recognition was accorded her for organizing PTA paper drives which completely equipped two elementary school libraries. Several weeks ago, she wrote her own memorial service for the rites which will be held at 7:30 PM tomorrow in St. Mark's United Methodist Church, 2391 St. Mark's Way. A graduate of Simpson College in Iowa, she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and had been working for her master of arts degree in English at Sacramento State College until she became too ill to continue. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children, Jon Eric of Germany; Kalen Saxton on Alaska; parents, the Rev. and Mrs. Floyd Shepherd of Des Moines, Iowa; and brother Norman F. Shepherd of New York. She also leaves four grandchildren. HUMOR (NOT PC) American Women at War Take all American women who are within five years of menopause - train us for a few weeks, outfit us with automatic weapons, grenades, gas masks, moisturizer with SPF15, Prozac, hormones, chocolate, and canned tuna - drop us (parachuted, preferably) across the landscape of Afghanistan, and let us do what comes naturally. Think about it. Our anger quotient alone, even when doing standard stuff like grocery shopping and paying bills, is formidable enough to make even armed men in turbans tremble. We've had our children, we would gladly suffer or die to protect them and their future. We'd like to get away from our husbands, if they haven't left already. And for those of us who are single, the prospect of finding a good man with whom to share life is about as likely as being struck by lightning. We have nothing to lose. We've survived the water diet, the protein diet, the carbohydrate diet, and the grapefruit diet in gyms and saunas across America and never lost a pound. We can easily survive months in the hostile terrain of Afghanistan with no food at all! We've spent years tracking down our husbands or lovers in bars, hardware stores, or sporting events...finding bin Laden in some cave will be no problem. Uniting all the warring tribes of Afghanistan in a new government? Oh, please ... we've planned the seating arrangements for in-laws and extended families at Thanksgiving dinners for years ... we understand tribal warfare. Between us, we've divorced enough husbands to know every trick there is for how they hide, launder, or cover up bank accounts and money sources. We know how to find that money and we know how to seize it ... with or without the government's help! Let us go and fight. The Taliban hates women. Imagine their terror as we crawl like ants with hot-flashes over their godforsaken terrain.
