ENCINA ALUMNI, Tom Dugally 78 is the sponsor for this week's update! I will be at a company offsite Thursday and Friday so this week's update is a few days earlier than normal. A few folks have taken me to task for including too much "political" material in the update, especially in the aftermath of the attack. In my defense, I try not to censor material which is submitted and to let each side express their opinion. This is a slippery slope to navigate. If you submit overtly political material, don't be surprised if it does not appear in the update. HOMECOMING 2001 The fourth annual Encina homecoming party has come and gone... We would like to thank Encina for sponsoring this year's party. Principal Myrtle Berry obtained permission from El Camino and made this an official Encina event so that we didn't have to get event insurance or submit facilities usage forms to the district. Encina also provided security, custodians and sold food and drinks. Many thanks to teacher Becky Hurley, who in her role as activities director, helped coordinate the party and made arrangements for the food. We didn't have as many RSVPs this year (about 250) as last year (about 400) but this was offset by a large influx of alumni who dropped in without RSVPing. Larry Murray '65, who spent most of the pregame party manning the checkin table, warned me that we almost ran out of guest nametags. I arrived at Encina pretty early and after checking in at the main office, went by the finance office and bought a 2001 yearbook for my yearbook collection. There is a shelf in the finance office vault with a single row of the yearbooks which are still available. The oldest yearbook available is a 1979 for those of you who are interested. Then I went over to the gym where the students were preparing for the homecoming rally. Teacher Irene Leafe was one of the first to arrive and was asked to be one of the rally judges. We had quite a few recent alumni in attendance who I didn't recognize from previous years and the alumni were well represented. The senior class won the rally this year. After the rally, some of the alumni walked over to the Encina Art Gallery. Several wondered what happened to the old auto shop and woodshop. We asked art teacher Mike Stevens and he said the last year woodshop was offered was 1994. There was so little interest it was cancelled and he took over the space for his art class and the art gallery. When we got to the art gallery, several teachers were having lunch in an office off the art gallery, including art teacher Mike Stevens, art gallery curator Suzanne Adan, ceramics teacher Eric Dahlin, teacher Stuart Freedman and a new drama teacher whose name escapes me. Former teachers Irene Leafe, Vince Marelich and Lou Huber spent some time reminiscing with their old colleagues. I took pictures of all the alumni art on display. On the bulletin board outside the art gallery were the senior pictures of the alumni artists. Lou Huber and I bought Encina Bulldog tshirts from Suzanne Adan. I learned that teacher Stuart Freedman is supervising the students who are doing the yearbook scanning so we can publish the yearbooks on the website. About 1230 we rendezvoused for lunch at the nearby Applebee's, which has a display of Encina memorabilia. We had a small group consisting of teachers Irene Leafe, Vince Marelich and Lou Huber, plus alumni Steve Palmer 74, Dave Morgan 61, Leslie Cameron Silva 65, Lorna Cline Gragg 72/73, Janine Louther 70 and La Vonne Foster Facino 78. In a repeat of last year's lunch at Applebee's, we ran into an Encina alumni who asked about our Encina clothing. This time it was Larry Gannon 66, who joined us for lunch. I mentioned to Larry that I grew up on Gannon Drive and he said it was no coincidence. Larry's father developed the Gannon neighborhood and Gannon is named for their family and Heskett is named for Larry's grandmother! We got to hear stories about how the area used to be covered with olive trees and herds of sheep back in Encina's early years. After lunch Dave Morgan 61 showed off his Rolls Royce. Unfortunately we were not able to take advantage of Dave's offer to drive in the homecoming parade as it's not a convertible. I offered to make it into a convertible but Dave declined. After lunch I drove to El Camino to start setting up. Fortunately, this year they hadn't started play rehearsals yet (next week) so we had the entire cafeteria to work with. Cavernous is the word which comes to mind. Chris Moser Taylor 78 was the first to arrive with the decorations. Chris has headed our decorating efforts the past two years. This year Chris made the two large, beautiful Encina Alumni Homecoming banners you saw. Chris also made the lighted Encina sign last year. We're planning for the future and will be able to reuse many of the decorations next year. Thank you Chris and decorating crew. The letter "a" in Chris' lighted Encina sign was out but La Vonne Foster 78 and Lisa Ott 81 were able to repair it. I would like to thank Larry Murray 65, Nancy Cooper Manly 71, Lisa Ott Williams 81, Janine Louther 70 and Steve Palmer 74 for staffing the check-in room and making sure folks got their nametags and signed the guest book. At Kate Grebitus 75's suggestion, I discarded the little Apache and Bulldog and maximized font size for those of us with old alumni eyes. Many thanks to Pam Maples Weber 77 and her husband Ed for setting up their karaoke systema and providing a soundtrack for the evening. Ed had a little collision with a post in the parking lot on the way in, but he was singing karaoke for us by the end of the evening. Also thanks to Steve Manly (Nancy Cooper 71's husband), who made some music CDs for Pam and Ed to play. About 5, a truck full of Encina's dinner and dessert food appeared and soon there was a mound of boxes in the cafeteria. Unfortunately, there was a mixup and the BBQ trailer was left near the stadium. Fortunately, La Vonne Foster Facino 78 had her pickup truck and was able to move the BBQ trailer to just outside the cafeteria so they wouldn't have to transport the hotdogs and burgers. La Vonne also rescued the freshman class, who were without a float vehicle and decorated her truck for the parade. About 530, folks started pouring in. We had a lot of new faces this year, including a number of alumni who hadn't rsvped but had heard about the homecoming party second hand. We collected a lot of new email addresses and contact information on the signin pads. I was glad to see lots of siblings in attendance: Harlan Lau 73, Laurie Lau 77, Bert Lau 81 Carolyn Teel 73, Patti Teel 75, Peggy Teel 76 Nancy Cooper 71, Don Cooper 73 Charlene DeVere 73, Becky DeVere 81 Jack Bettencourt 70, Ron Bettencourt 77, Kim Bettencourt 81 Diane Carrie Maples 73, Pam Maples 77 Mary Robichaud 69, Peggy Robichaud 71, Joe Robichaud 72, Terri Robichaud 75 Tim Will 71, Dan Will 78 Linda Weatherford 62, Sheran Weatherford 62 Betty Johnson 65, Care Johnson 71 Jon Dahlberg 71, Dave Dahlberg 77, Chris Dahlberg 80 Sue Kehoe 72, Tami Kehoe 77 Debbie Martinez 72 and son David Martinez 87 Sande Byerley 74, Marla Byerley 76 Lou Huber and daughter Michele Huber 77 Gail Miller 73, Lissa Miller 78 Christina Plessas 75, Pete Plessas 78 Jocelyn King 78, Paula King 82 Laura Gray 79, Tracy Gray 81 Deanna Poulsen 79, Kim Poulsen 80 Ed Ragle 77, Kathy Ragle 79 Daniel Bui 85, Mary Bui 88, Laura Bui 93 Jinne Webb 90, Penny Web 92 Vickie Durham 72, Terri Durham 79 And these were just the ones I know about... The eight tables for each set of five years seemed to work out pretty well. This system made it easy for alumni from the same era to find each other. Most folks who attended seemed to sign in on the sign in sheets and we got a lot of new contact information. We had several faculty attend who hadn't rsvped, including Ben LaMontague and Tom Wilde. I don't know how Ben LaMontague heard about the party. If you know how to contact him please write. Thanks to Jack Bassett for donating his Encina cap and to Kim Tierney 78 for offering some Kings tickets to raffle. Unfortunately, things were so hectic we never got around to making the scheduled announcements before folks starting drifting off to the football game. I'm sorry we didn't get to introduce to faculty and acknowledge the work of the reunion committee volunteers. About 830 I headed for the parking lot where they stage the parade. Things were chaotic as usual, with folks milling around in the dark until Vice Principal Paul Oropallo came down and assigned people to their cars. Once again, we had a lot of folks crash the parade but everyone had fun. Paul Stewart 76 headed the alumni float efforts again this year. Once again, Lisa Lowe Rodland 79 loaned us her father's flatbed trailer and Jim Bain 78 let the construction take place in his yard. With the assistance of his float crew, working in unseasonal heat, Paul surmounted wind, trees and other obstables to create a beautiful patriotic theme float with a waving Uncle Sam. The alumni float was pulled by Scott Moser, Chris Moser 78's husband. The float was crowded with official and "unofficial" riders and we were lucky to squeeze everybody on. On the way from the field to the stadium, Don Brodnansky received a call on his walkie talkie and had to leave the float. I believe he was assigned to Yon Gomez 81's car. The beach balls we threw into the crowd from the alumni float were a big hit with the crowd. It was great fun to ride with teachers Jack Carey, Tom Wise, Vince Marelich, Larry Stallings, the alumni challenge organizers/team, and the float crew. Thanks to Tom Dugally 78 for sponsoring my ride on the float! We missed teacher Christine Kojima but hope to have her ride next year. Many thanks to the alumni drivers who volunteered to drive the Encina royalty. We're sorry Kermit Pahl 61 had mechanical problems with the trailer he was using to transport his 1932 Ford Roadster. Fortunately, we had Dan Tuning 79's Mustang convertible in reserve. I think we broke new ground with Jerry Burks 71 on his Harley and girlfriend Diana Lile carrying the Stars and Stripes and leading the homecoming parade. I hope it made you proud to be an Encina alumni and an American! After the parade, I walked around the stands visiting and taking pictures. I think the alumni pretty much filled up two or three sections and the home stands were packed this year. Steve Palmer 74 donated light sticks again this year for the crowd to wave. The halftime score against Lindhurst HS was 30 to 3 in our favor. The final score was 44 to 3! One alumni commented to me that in her entire time at Encina, the football team won just one game. They are 4-0-1 and undefeated this year! Football coach and athletic director Russ Hibbard stopped by the postgame party. He was a happy camper! He was able to let everyone on the squad play because of the lopsided score. Rollin Coxe 64 helped document the party again this year. I just picked up the pictures today on CDs and will be adding them to the website. Teachers Becky Hurley and Kandi Kost Herbert 69 were selling coffee and dessert for Encina at the postgame party. After a while, many folks headed off for local drinking spots, including my sister Laurie Lau 77, who was out with her friends until 2am. At the end of the evening, thanks to Chris Moser Taylor 78 and Pam Maples Weber 77 for staying to help cleanup the cafeteria. Jim the custodian was impressed by our cleanup efforts and said he would be glad to have us back again next year. I have about 200 pictures from the day, plus the 50 that Rollin took. I'll be adding these to the website, hopefully by next week. If you have any good group shots you would like to share, email them my way. You can see the current RSVP list for the homecoming party here: http://www.encinahighschool.com/homecoming/homecoming2001.htm The Homecoming committee: Rollin Coxe 64 Larry Murray 65 Janine Louther 70 Nancy Cooper Manly 71 Harlan Lau 73 Sande Byerley Jaeke 74 Marla Byerley Windham 76 Paul Stewart 76 Pam Maples Weber 77 Jim Bain 78 Sharon Bordisso Patten 78 La Vonne Foster Facino 78 Tammy Johnson Baker 78 Gary Kennedy 78 Chris Moser Taylor 78 Lisa Lowe Rodland 79 Lisa Ott Williams 81 HOMECOMING ART SHOW If you haven't already done so, stop by the Encina Art Gallery and see the Alumni Show before it ends November 2nd. For each of the "ground-zero" victims, there are literally hundreds, if not thousands, of other individuals either directly or indirectly affected. The "media" (I use the word collectively) has certainly exposed virtually all of civilization to the specific acts of calculated horror on September 11, 2001, and now even brings to light many more related events to which America as a whole heretofore has been either benignly unaware or simply not informed. I wept and trembled, as did many of you, as I watched and listened to the tragedy unfold. I was in a state of shock. I suppose I'm still in a state of shock. I can't comprehend, especially with respect to the growing global atmosphere of "world civility," how anyone could commit the unprovoked, cold-blooded murder of seven thousand unsuspecting and innocent human beings. Oh, I know what the terrorists say they believe, and can even understand their motivation and basis for their disgust with us, but for the sake of humanity cannot agree with the overt, aggressive, sadistic, and disgustingly inhumane behavior exhibited by this cadre of select malcontents. Since Sept. 11, I have written to my Federal and State representatives, the FBI, and the US Dept. of Transportation, relating issues and events that I as a citizen-at-large believe either warrant cognizance or further investigation. My wife and I proudly display both the Flag on our home and patriotic buttons on our clothes; nevertheless, I still feel helpless. I know, however, deep within my psyche the feeling of helplessness triggers a keener sense of awareness of what can be done when something comes into focus. I pray this "awareness" remains extant in my being, as well as blossoming in an ethereal sense in all beings. Drawing from my past military experience, I know how difficult and complex the protracted action our Armed Forces will be. My "angered self" wants retribution, but my "knowing self" wants and end to this worldwide carnage. I've heard from and read the writings of those who disagree with me in my support of using force in trying to bring terrorism to its knees. I DO NOT support the use of force for demonstrative purposes. I DO support the use of force to aid in suppressing conduct or behavior that is disgusting, at least, to the majority of the world inhabitants. These terrorists have been universally condemned, and need to be, - and will be - universally prosecuted. In my opinion, all actions which have been undertaken by our government, including the multi-national action in Afghanistan just announced five minutes ago by the Secretary of Defense (10/7/01 - 2:12PM) are justified. Last week I read a letter from a former classmate and alumnus from Encina High School, Judy Jerszyk Bruce, who wrote to the Encina Class of 1964 "ListServ" (Email List Server) asking where former classmates were, and what could be done to keep in touch like the other former classes? Her letter was prefaced by the Webmaster from Encina H.S., Harlan Lau, couched in cajolic phraseology intended to bring us elusive recluses out of hiding. What occurred to me at that time, because of experiencing the "power in numbers" through my use of other ListServ processors, is that each of us has something valuable to contribute. Whether it's the genesis of an idea, a new perspective on an old idea, words of consolation, or information about something specific that can be done (for whatever cause) to help. Each message to the ListServ goes to all recipients, so whether you're planning for a class reunion or trying to rally people for a common cause - a little of each who contribute can make a difference. It's like "verbal TV." I know you can overdose on TV, God knows I've certainly done that since the "eleventh," so, I pondered how best to either start some new relief action, or help perpetuate on-going efforts? I decided to write this letter and send it to everyone I know, hoping that maybe I could stir just one more person into action. I'd like to hear everyone's point-of-view regarding the current terrorist situation. If you're not inclined to write and be "read by all," I've provided a Link on our Web Site, that takes you to a variety of other Web Sites relating to on-going efforts to either collect donations or organize long-term solutions to the current crisis. One of them in particular, the CEO of "Coffee Cup Software" has an incredible source of information, including pictures, and a daily "log of events" regarding the response he's received from his customers. His company has donated over $1,000,000.00 worth of Software to those companies who have placed the donation banner on their Web Site. So far, "Coffee Cup Software" has had upwards of 55,000 downloads of their "donate" link. I downloaded the graphic and link for our site through them, although I had already purchased their software. At very least, if I receive enough requests, I'll stop inundating you with all of my verbal postulations. You may copy the graphic from the top of our web site at http://www.ForKeepsSake.com/, follow the link to the other sites, or better yet, both! If any of you either own your own web sites, or exert influence over what appears in your companies web content, I urge you to take advantage of the resources offered and get involved with, in some small way, assisting with the "helping those in need" effort. Likewise, I'll entertain other links on our web site that share our point-of-view. We will take the train to NYC and she is having us picked up in a stretch limo and escorted around all weekend. Prevention Magazine is writing an article about her taking us to do the marathon and will have their film crew up there following us around and then throwing us a party the night of the marathon. I think that we may be on the Today Show the next morning. We get to stay at the Plaza Hotel for 2 nights. We are running in support of "Fred's Team" with Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. (Fred Lebow was the founder of the NYC Marathon and a big supporter of Memorial Sloan Kettering). I am attempting to raise a minimum of $3000. I will have to remember all of the perks while I am running those 26 miles. We do 24 miles this Sat. and I figure that if I can make it that far, I could walk another 2 miles if I had to." If you would like to support Cindy in the fight against cancer... "That would be great to get donations if people want to give. They would make out a check to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and send it to me at my address. Or if someone wants to do a credit card (they take VISA, MC and AMEX-$50 min.) they can email me, I will email a form to fill out and they can mail it to me.
