Date: Fri Aug 31, 2001 12:54 pm Subject: Encina Update (forms/float/art show/parade/homecoming/rsvps/70/mailing lists/reunions/siblings/cameron/obituaries/whats new) ENCINA ALUMNI, There is no sponsor for this week's update. FORMS The forms work for some folks but not for others. Consistently. Last night I updated the formmail.pl script which processes the forms. This version fixes numerous problems, including some which may explain the problems certain alumni have been having. "Versions 1.7-1.9 were issues for security fixes, and also fixed a problem causing selected servers to end the FormMail process before the e-mail was sent." If you have had problems in the past with forms, please try again and tell me you have submitted a form. That way I can tell whether things have improved. ALUMNI FLOAT "Harlan, I would like to pledge $50 if you ride the float in this years Homecoming, and an additional $50 if Christine Kojima will ride too. C'mon alum's, let's all pitch in for a good cause. Thanks, Tom Dugally 78" You're on Tom! Paul Stewart 76 sent me a sketch of his proposed alumni float for this year which I have attached to this update. It's safe to open. HOMECOMING ART SHOW Former PE teacher Judy Wilson sent me this... "HOMECOMING: THE ALUMNI SHOW October 1 - November 2, 2001 Opening Reception: Thursday October 4 from 3:00 to 6:00 pm Featuring artists who have graduated from Encina High School including John Landgraf 61, Richard Feese 66, Cathy Landgraf, Phil Amrhein 67, Jay Musler 67, Nina Paladino 67, Joe Amrhein, Mike Solomon 66, David Stone, and others. Suzanne Adan who is the Encina gallery curator does not know all of the artists out there who graduated from Encina. She went through the yearbooks and found the ones she knew how to get in touch with. Anyone interested in participating in the show should contact Mike Stevens at 971-5881 Mon-Fri. between 8:00 - 2:00 pm." What a great idea to have an homecoming alumni show at the Encina art gallery! And the show overlaps with the homecoming party. So if you are an alumni artist and would like to participate, contact Mike Stevens. Unfortunately, neither Mike or Suzanne have email. Note that Suzanne Adan is the sister of former Encina art teacher Jim Adan. And if you can't participate, try and stop by and see the alumni art on display. You can see pictures of the art gallery taken during the homecoming 99 rally here: http://www.encinahighschool.com/homecoming/homecoming99/rally.htm Note that there will be a homecoming rally Friday morning, October 5th, before the game. We have had a good crowd of alumni at the rally the past two years. If you are interested in visiting the art gallery before or after the rally at Encina, let me know and we'll see if Encina can accomodate us. HOMECOMING PARADE So far we only have one alumni driver for the homecoming parade. If you would like to show off your convertible in the homecoming parade please write. We need as many cars as possible as Encina sometimes has trouble rounding up enough cars for the royalty and we try and help out each year. Jerry Burks 71 wrote: "I have a convertible Mustang (and a BEAUTIFUL HARLEY!) (hehe) available for the parade... I'm not giving up on ya about the bike Harlan... Picture this, my Harley Davidson (all American) leading the Alumni portion of the parade with my pasenger waving either a large (classroom size) American flag or an Alumni Flag! Just the thought of it brings tears to my eyes... :)" You can see pictures of last year's homecoming parade here: http://www.encinahighschool.com/homecoming/homecoming2000/game.htm HOMECOMING 2001 Lots of alumni rsvps this week! We have received OFFICIAL permission to hold the Homecoming 2001 party at El Camino HS again this year. The pregame party will start at 5pm same as last year and the postgame party will end at 1130pm. If you are interested in helping on the homecoming committee let me know. Last year we had a great group of volunteers! For information about last year's homecoming party: http://www.encinahighschool.com/homecoming/homecoming2000.htm If you missed the description of the last homecoming party see: http://www.encinahighschool.com/archives/email/001027.txt HOMECOMING RSVPS As I mentioned, lots of rsvps this week. The 70s and 80s are well represented but we need more support from the 60s and 90s. Kindra Billerbeck 76 wrote: "I will try to come to the homecoming party. I talked to Paul Stewart at our reunion about being on the float.......... I'll do it if I'm not traveling for work. I travel a lot, and it's always last minute, so I can't commit just yet. But, I confess, I still have a cheer outfit I can squeeze into" Paul Whatley 70 wrote: "Last year's party was my first opportunity to see so many of my former classmates and I had a great time. Go Apaches/Bulldogs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Does anyone have and interest in an alumni golf tournament for the booster club fund raising effort? Food for thought." I'm now caught up with the class databases the reunion committees have sent me. I would like to hear from the classes which have had reunions this year! MAILING LISTS I thought I would include a little primer about the class mailing lists for those alumni new to the website. The class mailing lists provide a "chat" like environment where alumni can chitchat on a "partyline" while their classmates listen in. Replies to posts to the class mailing lists go to everyone on the list, as some have discovered to their chagrin. Some find the amount of email this chat generates too much. If this is the case, please write and I will remove you from your class list. But for others, it is great fun to chitchat with old classmates. If you are not on your class list and would like to try it, let me know. If your class mailing list is idle, just sent a note to encina1973@egroups.com (changing 1973 to your class year) and see what happens... As those belonging to the class lists know, I send out announcements to the appropriate list when new alumni are found, along with any bios which are submitted. Some classes have the nice custom of greeting new arrivals, which often gets a new conversation thread started. I encourage this practice of making newcomers welcome. Many of you may not realize that the membership of each class mailing list is accessible (but only to the subscribers and only if you register for free with yahoogroups.com), and that past messages are archived. For example, the 73 member list is here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/encina1973/members And the messages are archived here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/encina1973/messages Obviously you must edit these URLs depending on your class year. Here is a little encouragement for those of you lurkers out there who monitor the class mailing lists but do not participate. Gary Hastings 62 wrote: "I believe, like Rick said, that there are some voyeurs out there that are watching these conversations but for one reason or another don’t join in. I understand how it may be hard for some to just jump into the conversation. And I know that some folks just don’t want to take the time. There are some people that only respond when they are directly addressed. Some just don’t like to make small talk. Others may not want to kindle old relationships for fear someone may try to take advantage of them in some way. But everyone should understand that this is just for FUN! Seeing you jump in Dave brought back the P.E. Days to me. It is really (pardon the 60’s jargon) a head rush. Join in or not that’s up to you. But really, it would be more fun for everyone if more people would just kind of stick their head in and say ‘hello’. This is much different than your internet chat room. I wonder if there is any way we can get idea of who all has joined in here. I know I haven’t kept all these emails. We have known each other in another world; another time. We are all time travelers together." Randi Muller Kemper 62 wrote: "It's nice to see you guys writing. Since I discovered the computer I have had a ball. It is so great to find old friends and have a hard time understanding why more don't jump in. I personally like to hear what everyone has to say. Being the motor mouth that I am, it is hard sometimes for me to just shut up.*gggg*. I like Garys statement about us being time travelers together. My husband grew up with a father that was always on the move. He never started a year in one school and finished in the same school, and so he never experienced what we all have. Being with the same faces together for so many years is a real neat thing. We all didn't know everyone that well but we at least knew almost everyones names. It is fun for me to learn what everyone has done and become in their lives. I really am interested and do care. I'm getting ready for my big trip. We leave next week and will be gone for about a month. We will be in Washington DC and New York City. Invited by many new friends off the internet! We have had some stay with us too! Every time it has been a good experience! This has happened over a 4 year time span so we did give oursevles time to actually know each other. hugs, Randi" Rick Larson 62 wrote: "Shaun, It's good to hear your voice. As I read these I can hear the voices in my head, as if we're standing somewhere on the Encina campus anywhere between 1959 and 1962. Say what you want about senior moments, this wiring us all together again is having a stimulating effect on my memory and causing all kinds of vivid pictures to pop out complete with sound, light and the enthusiasm underneath. I haven't missed a reunion yet and I'm always so thankful I went. I've lost friends along the way that I got to see one last time. Everyone had a wonderful time. The reunion video I had made was one of the highlights of the night. I was so happy to see everyone, although there were some people that did'nt show. We took a bunch of pictures and the photographers did a great job. I will get some pictures to you to post on the website. I'm really looking forward to seeing the memory book. They said it should be coming out in a couple of months. I was very happy to see Mike and Caroline Pearson there. It was alot of hard work, but it was worth it. I have received many calls and e-mails from people saying that they had a great time. All I know is we had a wonderful time and saw a lot of good friends from High School. I'm glad that I did it and plan on doing our 15 year as well. It won't be as hard the next time since I found almost our entire class. As long as everyone stays updated on the website it should be a breeze. I have also updated the database for you and will send that to you soon. There were a lot of people you did not have on there. Ron passed away August 6, 2001. "Ronald Hauge, 87, loved animals By Steve Gibson Bee Staff Writer (Published Aug. 9, 2001) Ronald Hauge, a veterinarian who operated Auburn Boulevard Veterinary Hospital for more than four decades, died Tuesday of complications from Parkinson's disease. He was 87. Mr. Hauge was former president of the Sacramento Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the Arden Arcade Rotary Club. He was a founding member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, where he once did a stint as Sunday school superintendent. The youngest of nine children of Johanna Husby and Sten John Hauge, he was born in Minneapolis and reared in Sacramento. As a teenager, he worked as a Sacramento Bee carrier and graduated from Sacramento High School in 1932. From the time he was a youngster, he had an affinity for animals and "was good at calming them down," said one of his sons, Anders Hauge. "His mother used to raise chickens, and he gave them names," his son said. "They used to follow him around." After attending Sacramento Junior College, he enrolled at the Washington State College School of Veterinary Medicine, graduating in 1939. He then opened a veterinary practice, serving farm animals and family pets, in North Sacramento, an endeavor that was interrupted by World War II. After service as an Army Air Forces veterinarian, he returned to Sacramento and in 1946 opened his Auburn Boulevard Veterinary Hospital. At one time, he also tended animals from the Sacramento Zoo. After he sold the hospital in 1988 and retired, the county Board of Supervisors passed a resolution honoring his service to the community and declared April 10, 1988, as "Ronald T. Hauge Day" in Sacramento County. Survivors include his wife, Anna Lund Hauge of Sacramento; sons, Anders Hauge of Carmichael and Erick Hauge of Napa; daughters, Karen Lincoln of Sacramento and Joann Farren of Rocklin; a sister, Pearl Blix of Tacoma, Wash.; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. A memorial service is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Friday in Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 1615 Morse Ave." You can write Karen Hauge 62 at MisnLinc6@aol.com WHAT'S NEW 8/30/01: Marilyn Gerken 77 8/29/01: Susan Epperson 62 update, Barbara Brennan 66, Rodney Sievers 62, Ke ith McKee 62, Jerry Huelle 62, Tom Weller 62, Steven Memering 62, Mark Jahnsen 77 update 8/28/01: Shelly Palmer 82, Scott Chapman 70, Bill Chapman 71, Paul Chapman 72 8/27/01: Steve Giguere 73, Aaron Dimitras 77, Kenneth Mall 88, Carol Taylor 61, Dennis Keer 63, Winnifred Erickson 61, Winfield Erickson 63, Joe Jerke 63, Kevin Reider 64, Bob Reider 65, Mike Long 63, Tony Long 63, Ben Benson 63 classmates.com: Elizabeth Wirsing 65, Barbara Brennan 66, Paul Hood 67, Carol Jensen 67, Peter Garcia 71, Marcia Kingman 71, Patrick Cauley 77, Janielle Culpepper 77, David Viers 81, Dave Watson 77, William McPhail 78, Guillermo Martinez-Torres 79, Veronica Wegener 80, Tresea Porter 81, Janine Clark 82, Lisa Kroll 82, Shelly Palmer 82, Karen Smith 83, Sandra Stewart 86, Shannon Hearnesberger 88, Dawn Bearup 91, Deonna Gatlin 93, Sergey Studentsov 94, Rick Falcon 95, Bonnie Kunkel 96, Yatoma Robertson 96, Jang Yoo 96, Cam Truong 97, Stephen Bisby 01, Judy Garcia 01, Matoya Johnson 01 Class of 70: updated from class mailing list, lots of new listings Don't forget to submit your contact information or bio: contact: www.encinahighschool.com/directory/submit_contact.htm bio: www.encinahighschool.com/submit_bio.htm Harlan Lau '73 Encina webmaster www.encinahighschool.com harlan@rambus.com
