Date: Fri May 25, 2001 1:03 pm Subject: Encina Update (website/kojima/challenge/johnson/reunions/siblings/scandalis/pledges/compact flash/homecoming/whats new) ENCINA ALUMNI, This week's update is sponsored by Mark Kielty 68. WEBSITE Thanks to two generous Encina alumni, it looks like the Encina website will have a new home! First, I received a note from Paul Bonderson 70, whose name you may recognize as the alumni who pledged $100 for each alumni point scored in the Alumni Challenge. Paul volunteered to fund the purchase of a webserver dedicated to the Encina website, whereever it happened to be located. Thanks Paul! Second, I received a note from Ron Mintle 65. Ron owns an international software company called Yellowmagic in Temecula, CA. Ron has volunteered to host the Encina webserver for free, installing our webserver in their computer room, letting us use their internet connection and even backing up the website. Thanks Ron! Ron's servers are all running Windows so I am investigating windows webservers, which will make it easier for Ron's IT folks to maintain the Encina webserver. In order to make it easier for me to help administer the server, I'm looking for a server which is easy to maintain remotely. If you are knowlegeable about windows webservers please write. I'm currently looking at a Dell PowerApp.web 120 webserver appliance. It runs Windows 2000 and has Dell's browser-based setup and maintenance utilities. Ease of maintenance is a key consideration as I have little system administration experience. Again, many thanks to Paul Bonderson 70 and Ron Mintle 65 for stepping into the breach! I would also like to thank those of you who wrote offering financial support. Aaron Ford 88 sent me a check for $115 to cover next month's bill. Hans-Ruedi Hertig 70 offered to sponsor the website for one month each year! Tom Dugally 78 came up with the idea of selling ad banners on the website and said he would sponsor a month's bill in this way. Martha Dwyer 70 offered to sponsor the website on an annual basis. Lots of you wrote with suggestions and offering to contribute and your support is greatly appreciated. Sorry if I left you out. If things work out as we hope, we should have a new server up and running in the near future. Keep your fingers crossed! KOJIMA Janet Russel 79 wrote: Hi, I'm trying to get a handle on how many people will be attending the retirement party for Christine Kojima. Becky opened Paul's pledge envelope last week to find Paul had sent in a check for $10,000, substantially more than his already generous pledge of $7400 or $100 for each alumni point. Thank you Paul! We would appreciate it if everyone who pledged would send in their check. The list of pledges is towards the end of the update. Thanks! Check out the revised Alumni Challenge page here: http://www.encinahighschool.com/homecoming/challenge01.htm I've updated some of the captions but there are still a lot of unidentified folks. If you can help identify anyone please write. STEVE JOHNSON Former Encina adapted PE teacher Steve Johnson is retiring. Steve wrote: "Harlan, You have done a wonderful job as webmaster for the Encina grads. I have enjoyed reading your publications over the past couple of years. However, I am retiring in a few days and will be spending most of my time at Tahoe - no computers. Thanks for sharing all of the bits-and-pieces regarding staff and students from Encina. You can now officially remove me from your vast list of mail recipients. Steve Johnson, Adapted Physical Education Teacher."
