Date: Sun Apr 29, 2001 9:48 pm Subject: Alumni Challenge Update ENCINA ALUMNI, This is another alumni challenge update. Just a reminder that the early bird deadline is Tuesday, May 1st. The cost is $20 per adult up to and including May 1st. The cost increases to $25 after May 1st. Don't procastinate any longer! You may receive this twice, I've sent it to both the Encina Update mailing list and the individual class mailing lists. Keith DeLuca Paulsen 81 has pledged $1 for every RSVP to the alumni challenge by Wednesday, May 2nd, plus $2 for every RSVP from the class of 81. This is in addition to all his other pledges for blocked shots and cheerleaders. We have about 105-110 rsvps as of Sunday night Keith... Bob Goosmann 74 wote: "Had an excellent practice with the team today-- the kids better come ready to play..." Nuff said. CHALLENGE TO ALL CLASSES Keith DeLuca Paulsen 81 wrote: "This is great. "Class of 81" is finally beating the "Class of 80" at something and all of the other classes in the 80's. That's right, I'm calling you out class of 80. Step up to the challenge. I challenge all alumni in any of the classes to join in and I will donate $1.00 for every alumni that jumps on board and RSVP's to this event and $2.00 for every fellow classmate in class of 81 who RSVP's and joins the fun. RSVP's must be made by Wednesday for my donation and you get a price break if you RSVP by the 1st. Come on class of 81 don't let our class down and let's see if we can have the most classmates at this event. It's only $20. and all the funds go to the school. Where's the alumni from classes 82-90???? The challenge is right here $1.00 for every RSVP before Wednesday.... does anyone want to match this challenge???? CLASS OF 81 RULES THE CLASSES OF THE 80'S!!!! Come on George Champayne, Brian Bender, Bob & Kim Bjorkland, Dave & Kim Smith, Kevin Anderson, where are you guys? Keith (DeLuca) Paulsen" PER POINT PLEDGES The total per alumni point pledge stands at $241.56, with only another $8.44 to reach our goal of $250 per alumni point. $100 : Paul Bonderson 70 50 : Ronald Morgan 70 1.71 : Scott Plotkin 71 1 : Harlan Lau 73 1 : Linda Barber-Zollinger Hammock 74 1 : Steve Palmer 74 1 : Denni Schwartz Mador 74 1 : Steve Walter 74/75 75 : Gerry Coppock 78 1 : Tom Dugally 78 1 : Carol Markell Keller 78 1: Dan Mayes 78 (first to make this pledge) 1 : Marvin Gee 79 1 : Joe Niederberger 79 1 : Christy Cooper 80 1 : Kevin Boehl 81 1.85 : Lance Ballance 85 1 : James Bui 90 --------- $241.56 Is your class represented on this list? Shouldn't they be? Hmmm, 70s, 80s, 90s, what happened to the 60s? Kevin Boehl 81 wrote: I will pledge a buck for every alumni point and also an additional three dollars for every point Henry Meier makes provided he e-mails me and remembers who I am. I am to far to attend so I need you to explain how I pay you i.e. check, credit card #,or what ever , also any chance of there being highlights shown over the internet via webcam? Carol Markell Keller 78 wrote: "Okay, Harlan ! Instead of $1 per point for Kim Tierney who might not even be playing, (Go Kings !!) I'll increase my pledge to $1 for each Alumni point. I have another question which a lot of people might be wondering about....what if you can't make it to the dinner portion of the evening ?? Is it possible to just attend the game ?? Also--Do Mascots count as cheerleaders ?? I'll donate $5 for each Mascot that shows up in "Apachewear"..... Thanks ! Carol Markell Keller EHS '78" Scott Plotkin 71 wrote: "Harlan, we aren't able to attend the May 11 event for Encina, but please put me down for $1.71 per point scored by the Encina Alumni! Go Apaches!" CLASS PLEDGES Chuck Armstrong 77's classmates Bill Farley, Tricia Ford, Mike Martis, Kevin Meechan, Herb Niederberger and Jeff Slater have pledged $30 for each point that Chuck scores during the game. This means each point Chuck scores is actually worth $271.56 ! Give that man the ball ! RSVPS Kim Bettencourt Bjorklund 81 wrote: "My family will be attending the Alumni Challenge. Bob Bjorklund, class of '80 Kim (Bettencourt) Bjorklund, class of '81 Krista Bjorklund, 12 years old, class of 2006 Lindey Bjorklund, 10 years old, class of 2007 You now have a spectator from the class of '80! We've had a lot of fun reading the different pledges that keep coming in. Our daughters have been as excited as we have at the amount of support that Encina is receiving. They both love basketball and can hardly wait for the game. May the number of pledges and the number of RSVPs keep growing, Kim " Jeff Lillman 91 wrote: "Its Jeff Lillman from the class of 1991. My wife and I will attend the dinner and game. could you please send me info on where i can send the check. We think it will be fun to see the classrooms (but ill miss thows darn lockers :o)).Could you please hit up some more people from our class like Billy Laun or Mark Balance and Scott Bennett. " Billy Laun 91 and Rochelle Karrick Laun 92 wrote: "OK OK OK - I think that I have heard enough and we will attend. Add Billy Laun '91 and Rochelle Laun (Karrick) '92 and two kids to the RSVP list. Please let me know how much it will cost and I will send the money. Also, I will contact Chris '91 and Leslie Cheng '88??? about playing on the Alumni team. Can females play on the team also? Laura Bui '93 is attending and Shayla Juarez '91 can play hoop, too. Let me know. Rochelle Laun '92 Billy Laun '91" ALUMNI BASKETBALL TEAM The alumni basketball team roster is: Bob Goosman 74 Chuck Armstrong 77 Kim Tierney 78 Chris Dahlberg 80 Henry Meier 80 Scott Simon 80 Geoff Shumway 89 Jason Talanian 90 I hope that alumni will come out and support their classmates at the game. ALUMNI BAND The following are signed up for the alumni band: Kurt Pearsall 74 on trumpet (in charge) Emmett O'Sullivan 69 on ? Mike Pittsley 71 on trombone Ralph Davies 76 on trombone Bill Bua 81 on saxophone Yon Gomez 81 on drums John Knurr on tuba or trombone David Robinson 79 on ? If you are interested in participating or would like Kurt to consider/contact another alumni you think should be in the band, please contact Kurt Pearsall 74 at bixstix@aol.com and copy me at harlan@rambus.com We're trying to make arrangements to meet at Encina before the game so the alumni band can practice and get organized. CHEERLEADERS Kelly Horine Hoffman 88 wrote: "I still have my cheer outfit, I was about a size 5 when I wore it. It can be borrowed." David Robinson 79 wrote: "Okay Joe, and the class of 79' I'm there! I will contact Joe Abreu and see if we can't put a barbershop quartet together. And, how about a game of alumni slaughter ball just for old times sake? Bill Overstreet would be up for that. I see Danny Schwartz everyday at El Camino and I will ask him about attending. The whole thing sounds like a blast and I am in for $10 per 79' cheerleader/song leader who wears their outfit and leads us in a cheer. Go Apaches! David Robinson (P.S. count me in on the band)" Gerry Coppock 78 wrote: "I pledge $100.00 additional dollars (not per point), if Terri (Durham - 79) Fuentes wears her cheerleading uniform to the game -- (even though I won't be there to enjoy it!)... If her husband, Max, puts her uniform on at the half and runs one lap around the court, I pledge another $50.00... (Sorry Max ! ) Also, I think there should be a half-time, all-comers, center-court, elimination shoot out... Say, $10.00 a throw; the winner to get some sort of a donated prize! Audience participation recommended !! Kids - say, under 12 years of age, $2.00 a throw... I'm just thinking... Whatever seems appropriate... That's the best I have idea-wise for now! " Gerry Coppock 78 also wrote: " Us old guys don't need to practice our free-throws -- we need to practice our "Jumping-Defensive- (Foul) -Checks"... (The ol' land on your back and hold your head trick)... THAT's how we will get free-throws... Ha! Ha! Just a little humor for the Alumi Squad... (Break no bones, men!!) " I asked Kim Bettencourt Bjorlund 81 and Bob Bjorklund 80 whether their daughters might be interested in dressing as mascots and leading some cheers: "We talked to our daughters about dressing up as Apache Mascots, during the basketball game. If it would earn money for Encina, they will both be happy to. Will Carol Markell '78 be willing to pay for child mascots? We also talked to them about possibly leading some cheers, and they are will to try. It would definitely help if there were some alumni cheerleaders leading them. We are able to borrow and Indian costume for our youngest daughter. However, we do not have one for our oldest. She is a size 12 to 14 children's or a size 2 or XS adult. Is their anyone who might have one we can use for her? Bob and I were talking about where the girls should be placed on the RSVP list. Since they will both graduate closest to the class of '81, we thought that our family should have three for the class of '81 and one for the class of '80. What do you think, Keith? We're looking forward to the event, Kim" Does anyone have a Apache costume their kids can borrow? I asked Terri Jurich 74 if she had located a costume yet: "No luck on the costumes/uniforms yet!! Terri" Come on folks, it's one thing to wear your cheerleader or songleader or mascot costume yourself, but I hope we can get some folks to lend their costumes for a good cause. It's worth another $100 to Encina if we can find costumes for Terri and Kathy Webber Gill 82. We still need a cheerleader volunteer from 78-80... HALFTIME Bob Goosmann 74 wrote: "During halftime, we need about eight minutes to "re-warmup" prior to the start of the second half, and you could probably have 15 more minutes to use as you like. Anything longer and us old guys will be in deep trouble." I don't know whether this is long enough to stage some sort of event for the audience. Gerry Coppock 78 suggested we have a halfcourt shot competition. Either we could give away a donated prize or someone could pledge some amount if someone made the shot. We're open to suggestions and pledges for fun activities to get the kids and crowd involved. ALUMNI CHALLENGE RSVPS If you have signed up, please check I didn't miss you below.
