Date: Tue Apr 24, 2001 8:00 pm Subject: Alumni Challenge update ENCINA ALUMNI, This is a special update about the Alumni Challenge. As most of you know, last weekend I sent out appeals to the individual class mailing lists, primarily to reach those who are not on the Encina Update mailing list. Perhaps I leaned too heavily on the guilt side in my appeal. If so, I'm sorry. I'm an engineer, not a marketing and sales type, and my promotional efforts are lacking in finesse. I know some of you are undoubtedly tired of receiving what seems to be a constant stream of requests for support and money... But I digress. Anyway, the results were actually very positive. With the clock ticking down, I thought I would send out a special alumni challenge update addressed to those of you on the fence who might be persuaded to commit yourselves. Read on, I think you will find some surprises in store... FACULTY Teacher John Knurr, band director from 1966-1974, wrote: "Hey Kurt and Harlan - Am coming out for the game - will arrive Thurs My 10 - hopefully stay at Orlin Schulers - and return Tues - May 15. Kurt - get me a horn for the game - either tuba or trombone. Looking forward to seeing you guys and everyone else again. John" I spoke with Jack Carey, chairman of Encina's music department from 1961-1984. Jack will be coming too. Language teacher Christine Kojima, who taught at Encina from 1969-89 and who is retiring from Del Campo this June, will be at the party until 7. Del Campo is giving Christine a retirement party which starts the same night at 730! RSVPS We are hovering around 75 RSVPs tonight, including the alumni basketball team and alumni band. This is about double the total last Friday so we are getting some traction here. Remember, the cost is $20 before May 1st and $25 after May 1st. DONATIONS Lots of donations have been pouring in from those who cannot attend or live too far away. Many thanks! PLEDGES Pledge activity has been very heavy and this unanticipated segment of the alumni challenge promises to raise the more money for Encina than the admission. Of course, the amount depends on the points scored by the alumni... I think Rocky Niederberger 77 was the first, pledging $5 for each point Chuck Armstrong 77 scored during the game. The class of 77 is up to $30 for each point Chuck scores now. Things escalated when Dan Mayes 78 pledged a $1 for each point scored by any alumni. He has been matched by Tom Dugally 78, Joe Niederberger 79, Linda (Barber-Zollinger) Hammock 74, Christine Cooper 80 and James Bui 90 for a total of $6 per alumni point. Keith DeLuca Paulsen 81 pledged $2 for each shot the varsity team block, but was persuaded to change this to $2 for all shots blocked by either team. Then Gerry Coppock 78 wrote: "I pledge $50.00 (Fifty-Dollars) per point... And... I challenge Tom Dugally, or any other Encina Alumni, to match or increase my pledge... Bona Fide... (Does anyone else hear dice rollin?) -- I won't be at the game. But, Good Luck 78!! Gerry Coppock" Later Gerry wrote: "Gentlemen, Holy smokes! Good response !! Did I say $50.00??? I must have been nuts! Let's make it, say, $75.00 per point. Rocky... please... you can do better than $30.00... Max... Tom... where are you??? Gerry" After I picked myself up off the floor, I thanked Gerry for his unbelievably generous pledge! There is going to be some serious pressure on this alumni squad to score some points on May 11th. Adding Gerry's $75 to the $6 per point pledged by other alumni adds up to $81 per point. I will add $1 per point myself to make it $82. And we challenge you to make it $100 per point by gametime! Can we do it? ALUMNI CHEERLEADERS Keith DeLuca Paulsen 81 wrote: "If you think this is appropriate I will donate $50.00 to the pledges for an alumni cheerleader from any class 1981-1983 to show up in her cheerleading outfit and cheer for the alumni team. If others join on this pledge for other years maybe we(alumni side) will have a cheerleading squad. Keith (DeLuca) Paulsen" This is not without precedent. Amy Francis 88 wore her cheerleader outfit to the Homecoming 99 game and Irene Birchfield Campbell 68 wore her mascot costume to the Homecoming 2000 party last October. Do we have any takers? ALUMNI BASKETBALL TEAM The alumni basketball team roster is: Bob Goosman 74 Chuck Armstrong 77 Kim Tierney 78 Chris Dahlberg 80 Henry Meier 80 Scott Simon 80 Geoff Shumway 89 Jason Talanian 90 I hope that alumni will come out and support their classmates at the game. No rsvps from the class of 80, although we do have two pledges. ALUMNI BAND The alumni band is taking shape. Kurt Pearsall 74 wrote: "So far the musician line up is: Kurt Pearsall 74 on Trumpet Mike Pittsley 71 on Trombone Ralph Davies 76 on Trombone Bill Bua 81 on Saxophone" If you are interested in participating or would like Kurt to consider/contact another alumni you think should be in the band, please contact Kurt Pearsall 74 at bixstix@aol.com and copy me at harlan@rambus.com ALUMNI CHALLENGE RSVPS If you have RSVPed, please pay in advance and not at door. The earlier the better, so we can build some momentum and get the bandwagon effect we enjoyed with the homecoming party last fall. We need your support to make this event a success and raise money for Encina and have fun at the same time. CLOSING In closing, I hope some of you are persuaded to rsvp. We need a big crowd of alumni at the game to cheer on the team. Or if not, to make a donation or a pledge to support Encina. This is promising to be an exciting and memorable evening that will be talked for years. Will you be there? Pledges stand at $82 for each point scored by the alumni team. We challenge you increase this pledge to $100 per point. Do we have any takers? You CAN make a difference... Harlan Lau '73 Encina webmaster www.encinahighschool.com harlan@rambus.com
