Date: Fri Apr 6, 2001 12:28 pm Subject: Encina Update (pearson/kojima/esparcia/alumni challenge/reunons/siblings/search/crowder/bios/obituaries/homecoming/whats new) ENCINA ALUMNI, Yeah! This week's update is sponsored by Andrea Mandell Kraus 76. Long dry spell there . MIKE PEARSON 91 I received this note from Mike's mother, Caroline Pearson: "Hi, Harlan. My daughter Maryann Pearson, class of 1995, told me that Mike Pearson, who is my son, is a "missing person." Mike isn't missing, but when I tell you why you haven't heard from him, you'll understand better why NOBODY has heard from him. Mike was in a pretty bad accident in May, 1993, and he spent the remainder of that year in a coma. After emerging from the coma, he could neither speak nor walk. He spent six years in a skilled nursing facility in South Sac, but I have moved him to a convalescent hospital closer to home. He resides at Arden Rehab at 3400 Alta Arden in case anyone cares to go see him. He would love to see anyone because believe me, being in a rest home where everyone is either ancient or confused can be depressing. Mike's spirits are pretty good. You might have to remind him who you are because he had extensive brain damage and some parts of his memory may need a little jogging. Please keep him posted about the 10 year reunion through this e-mail address or at 1078 Clinton Rd, Sacto, 95825, because Mike has expressed an interest in going. Thank you, Harlan. Caroline Pearson" If you know any of Mike's friends, please forward this to them or give them a call. You can write Mike care of Caroline Pearson at Jdpdds@aol.com CHRISTINE KOJIMA Janet Russel Mason 79 is organizing a retirement party for Christine Kojima, who is retiring this year. The tentative date is Saturday, July 14th. Please write Janet at ideasbydesign@home.com if you are interesting in helping or attending. I've seen a lot of rsvps fly by this past week. I think someone is even coming from out of state! Renee Welch Wojnowski 72 wrote: "I am sure you are aware that many of Christine's students no longer live in the area. Perhaps we could arrange to have an "online" party. By an online party I mean make use of a chatroom ( Teacher.Net has several rooms that are not ususally used nor are they high traffic) Just a thought. I have kept in contact with Christine since I graduated & she in one of the reasons I became a teacher. It was just a thought. Renee Welch Wojnowski "72" If you are interested in the online party Renee suggested, please contact Renee at Wojo2201@pnx.com so Renee can arrange a time with Christine. Great idea Renee! SUSAN ESPARCIA Janice Gerrity 79 wrote that Susan Esparcia is also retiring this year. FIRST ANNUAL ENCINA HIGH SCHOOL ALUMNI CHALLENGE I have to admit I'm a bit disappointed in the number of RSVPs so far. This really seems like such a fun event, I can only imagine that it's the money which is discouraging folks from RSVPing. That and waiting to see that other folks they know are going too. We need some brave souls to step up and sign up and be first. Give your buds a call and sign up for the alumni challenge. Drum up interest on your class mailing list! The class of 74 has 13 RSVPs for the alumni challenge. What a great show of support! I'm embarassed that I'm the only member of the class of 73 to rvsp. The class which has had the highest attendance at the previous homecoming parties. Sad, very sad. Chris Dahlberg 80 will also be playing for the alumni basketball team and Kim Tierney 78 will play if the Sacramento Kings aren't in a playoff game that night. I hope the classes of 78 and 80 will come out and support their classmates! Come on people, where's your Encina spirit! You can make donations by either check or PayPal. Please note that your contribution is a donation in the comment field. Bob Goosman 74 and Steve Palmer 74 are organizing this event. They have asked my help in promoting the event. Bob wrote: "In order to raise desperately needed funds for the school, the first ever “Encina Alumni Challenge” will be held the evening of Friday, May 11. This will be a fun and interesting event for all Encina alumni—held at the school—featuring tours of the campus, a fabulous catered dinner, and a basketball game pitting an alumni team against this year’s league-winning team. Here are the details: 4:30 p.m.—6 p.m. Campus Tours: Current students will provide guided tours of the campus for alumni. Visit the Encina Art Gallery, check out your old classrooms, and marvel at the fact that all of the lockers are gone. 5 p.m.—7:30 p.m. Dinner: Dannie’s Catering will provide a delicious barbecue dinner featuring tri-tip, chicken breast, and all the fixings. Tables will be set up for each class year to facilitate socializing. 7:30 p.m.—9 p.m. Basketball Game: A team of former varsity players will take on this year’s team, which won the league title. 9 p.m.—10:30 p.m. Post-Game Party: Coffee and socializing with background music from the 60s, 70s and 80s. Cost for the entire event is $20 per person, and all proceeds will go directly to the school. Dannie’s Catering has generously agreed to provide the dinner at cost, so this will be a great fund-raising opportunity." This is a fabulous opportunity to see the newly modernized Encina, have dinner with old classmates, make new friends and watch an entertaining basketball game between an alumni and students. I've created a webpage for the alumni challenge here: http://www.encinahighschool.com/homecoming/challenge01.htm I will maintain an up to date list of the RSVPs here. The goal is to have at least 200 paying participants! RSVPs so far: 1971 Nancy Cooper Manly(2) 1973 Harlan Lau 1974 Toni Blas Moots(2) Sande Byerley Jaeke Lisa Davis Zellar Julie Eissinger Meador Bob Goosmann (playing on team) Terrea Harlan Sherman Terri Jurich Howard Steve Palmer Donna McManus John Nunez Randi Sanford Cunningham Dennis Schwartz Mador Suzanne McGee Anderson 1976 Pamela Rizzo (2,donation,out of town) 1978 Kim Tierney (playing on team) 1980 Chris Dahlberg (playing on team) 1981 Jo Tierney (donation, can't attend) If you are interested in attending or helping, please write. The earlier the better, so we can build some momentum and get the bandwagon effect we enjoyed with the homecoming party last fall. We need your support to make this event a success and raise money for Encina and have fun at the same time. REUNIONS If any of the classes have finalized more details, please let me know. If you have siblings or friends from these classes, please let them know their class is having a reunion so they don't miss it. This especially applies to those who aren't online. Heddy is the one you talk with when you inquire about reunions and has been responsible for referring many of you to the Encina website! I've been corresponding with Heddy since the incarnation of the Encina website and she's the most helpful person you can imagine! Vice Principal Stephen Gatewood wrote this profile, which appeared in the February issue of the Bulldog Barks newsletter. "There are many things in life that make a person feel good. Money, cars, family, travels, good health, religion, love, but according to Confucius, the greatest positive feeling comes from volunteering and helping others. Heddy Crowder continues this legacy of helping others, modeled from her mother. Heddy Crowder grew up in Chico, California. Her mother, Penny, was a nurse and her father, Marvin, was an Orthopedic Surgeon. She lived one year in Iowa and Utah where her dad worked at Shriners Children's Hospital to become an orthopedic surgeon. He is retired now at the age of 87. He was particularly concerned about children who had clubfeet. He wanted the word to get out that if you cast the babies early it could be corrected. Marvin also has a claim to fame because he was the doctor on the set of the famous movie starring Errol Flynn and director John Huston. In fact she got to sit on John Houston's lap. It was no big deal at that time; however, it was fun to move about the set. Her mother was highly active as a volunteer in Hooker Oak Elementary School. Penny would volunteer as a Girl Scout leader in lower economic areas because she wanted to give back to society. She was so active that she received a life membership award in the PTA for her philanthropic works. Her mother died when Heddy was 19. She was egalitarian, involved, and sensitive. According to Heddy, Chico was a great place to grow up. There are two distinct Chicos: one the indigenous population; second the University. She has always liked going to school. She remembers in the 3rd grade loving to learn to write cursive. Heddy even remembers the first word she learned to write cursive. "Music" has a lot of undulations that made it fun to write. She has two brothers and one sister. Chuck, her brother, died at 58 because of a heart attack, and has one son. Sister Penny, 56, lives in the Bay Area and has two children. The youngest, Rocky, 50, lives in Maryland, and is married with 3 children. Chico High School was a kick. She had so much fun. She was active in Student Government and many clubs and on the honor rolls all four years. She was a Cheerleader and played field hockey. Heddy remembers even fencing in PE. Asked what was one difference between dances of her time and today and she said, "Boys were on one side of the room and girls were on the other. Also, girls could not wear pants at school." She attended University of Pacific for her freshmen year as a Spanish major. She returned to Chico for the completion of her college years, because her mother was dying of cancer. She wanted to join the Peace Corps. She really liked Chico State. She remembers cutting one time and going to Sacramento to shop at the fabulous Malls and driving back she burned up her mother's auto engine by not putting in oil or water. Of course, this did not go well with her parents. She liked the Pioneer Days events that no longer exist. Chico State used to have village towns in the quad. She was not much of a joiner in activities at Chico. She did meet her husband there is a very precarious way. Heddy was delirious about getting an "A" in her Sociology class and came into the student center, telling her friends about it, and he was there. He asked her out and she told him that she already had a boyfriend but every time she saw him he would ask again and persistance won out. Finally she agreed to go out. It was a thrilling date; they went to the drive-in to see "Dracula" and she took her Bible with her to ward off all demons. Dating was easy because both of their parents knew each other and approved. After Chico they moved to Sacramento where Wayne finished his law degree at McGeorge School of Law. He worded for CSEA doing research for the mentally ill and the closing of state mental hospitals. Being a lawyer was not his calling. So, he quit to become a salesman. They have three children: Amber 27 has Down syndrome and goes to Orange Grove Adult School; Erik 26 graduated from Davis with a degree in Human Development and Chico State with a masters in Public Administration. He wants to work for the Secret Service. Marla, 24, graduated from Sac State with a Liberal Studies degree and multi subject and special education credentials. Marla also has a masters in Special Education. She is getting married this summer to a nice young man, Jeff, an accountant who lives in the Bay Area. She is so proud of her wonderful family. She loves to travel. They have been to Europe and have visited Oklahoma, Oregon, the East Coast, and Mexico. They plan to travel to Alaska and do the Inland Passage this summer. One of her favorite hobbies is she and six ladies have had season tickets for the Sacramento Light Opera for 5 years. She loves decorating her home with knick knacks for all seasons and holidays. She has a doorbell which plays 24 songs. She loves to read and is currently reading "Tuesdays with Morrie". It is a little depressing. Gardening rounds out her interests. Tomatoes are her favorites to grow. She really likes Encina. The staff and students are very special. Her dedication to Encina goes beyond the monetary rewards. She wants to help and see all students achieve to their highest potential. A word of advice she would give to the students of Encina. "Involve yourself in your community, make it a lifelong commitment. It gives you a great feeling of satisfaction. It makes you feel good."
