CHRISTINE KOJIMA Janet Mason 79 is interested in organizing a retirement party for Christine Kojima. I've contacted Christine and she wrote: "What a great honor to think that some of you would take the time out of your busy lives to give me a retirement party. That is such a thoughtful gesture and it actually brought tears to my eyes. To be remembered for something you really like to do is a great way to "go out". I think that is what every teachers lives for, to see the fruits of her labors." Please contact Janet at ideasbydesign@home.com if you are interested in attending or helping with Ms Kojima's retirement party. Please "cc" me (harlan@rambus.com ) on your mail to Janet. I'll keep everyone informed of the details. As an aside, I should have noted last week that Christine is a FORMER Encina teacher. Christine taught at Encina from 1969, when she started as Christine Okumura (how many of you knew her maiden name?), to 1989, when she moved to Del Campo. LAVERNE GONZALES Diane Schoenborn Kelly 73 wrote that former Encina teacher Laverne Gonzales is also retiring. SJUSD is giving the golden handshake this year and about 200 middle and high school teachers are expected to retire. Laverne is another very popular former Encina teacher. I had Spanish from Laverne and he also coached the tennis team I was on. Then there were the famous Mexico trips Laverne organized! And I think he had a lot to do with EBS, although that was after my time. Laverne came to our '73 reunion and you can see a picture of him here: http://www.encinahighschool.com/class73/reunion25/dinner/photos1.htm I also saw Laverne last year at the homecoming party, although he seems to have escaped unphotographed. If you would like to write Laverne, I would be glad to forward your message to him. When you include Joe Lawrence, that makes three former Encina teachers who are retiring this year. Anyone else? Laverne and Joe are both retiring from Rio Americano. FIRST ANNUAL ENCINA HIGH SCHOOL ALUMNI CHALLENGE The class of 74 has a growing contingent supporting the organizers. I would like to hear from the reunion committees from other classes. Is it too much to hope that each class can sponsor one table??? They have asked my help in promoting the event. Bob wrote: "In order to raise desperately needed funds for the school, the first ever “Encina Alumni Challenge” will be held the evening of Friday, May 11. This will be a fun and interesting event for all Encina alumni—held at the school—featuring tours of the campus, a fabulous catered dinner, and a basketball game pitting an alumni team against this year’s league-winning team. Here are the details: 4:30 p.m.—6 p.m. Campus Tours: Current students will provide guided tours of the campus for alumni. Visit the Encina Art Gallery, check out your old classrooms, and marvel at the fact that all of the lockers are gone. 5 p.m.—7:30 p.m. Dinner: Dannie’s Catering will provide a delicious barbecue dinner featuring tri-tip, chicken breast, and all the fixings. Tables will be set up for each class year to facilitate socializing. 7:30 p.m.—9 p.m. Basketball Game: A team of former varsity players will take on this year’s team, which won the league title. 9 p.m.—10:30 p.m. Post-Game Party: Coffee and socializing with background music from the 60s, 70s and 80s. Cost for the entire event is $20 per person, and all proceeds will go directly to the school. Dannie’s Catering has generously agreed to provide the dinner at cost, so this will be a great fund-raising opportunity." This is a fabulous opportunity to see the newly modernized Encina, have dinner with old classmates, make new friends and watch an entertaining basketball game between an alumni and students. Bob Goosmann 74 intends to be player/coach and Steve assures me the game will be competitive! I've created a webpage for the alumni challenge here: http://www.encinahighschool.com/homecoming/challenge01.htm I will maintain a list of the RSVPs here. There will be a form soon which you can use for RSVPing. The goal is to have at least 200 paying participants! I would like to encourage each class to buy one table (not sure how many people that would be, 8-10?). If anyone would like to buy a table for their class please contact me. I would like to encourage alumni to bring their spouses and families to the event. Kids under nine are half-price. RSVPs so far: 1971 Nancy Cooper Manly 1973 Harlan Lau 1974 Julie Eissinger Meador Bob Goosmann Terri Jurich Howard Steve Palmer Donna McManus John Nunez Randi Sanford Cunningham Suzanne McGee Anderson 1981 Jo Tierney (donation, can't attend) If you are interested in attending or helping, please write. The earlier the better, so we can build some momentum and get the bandwagon effect we enjoyed with the homecoming party last fall. We need your support to make this event a success and raise money for Encina and have fun at the same time. ERIC DAHLIN Vice Principal Stephen Gatewood wrote this profile for Eric Dahlin for the March 2001 issue of the Encina Bulldog Barks... "Who is this? Clue 1. Tall, Handsome, quick witted always smiling Clue 2. Famous throughout Northern California Clue 3. Santa Clause Clue 4. Who is a walking ceramic piece of art because he always has clay on him from his head to his toes? Will the real Eric Dahlin please stand up. Eric Dahlin was born December 25, 1945 in Vancouver, Washington, sometimes pronounced Warshington. His parents are Arthur and Laura Dahlin who met each other during WWII and moved to Sacramento in 1950 during the Korean War to work in his grandfather's bakery in Town and Country Village. His father had been in the business for over 25 years and eventually opened his own "Fruitridge Pastries" on Fruitridge Avenue. Eric went to Dyer Kelley Elementary and then to Mira Loma High School; there were no junior high schools. He remembers when this area was mostly farm land, hops fields and fishing ponds. American River was his fishing playground where he spent many a pleasant day. Howe Avenue was a two lane road with huge ditches 6' to 8' deep. Also on Howe Avenue there was a large pheasant farm. His sister Disa is now 53 and married to Wally and they live literally within a few steps of the Smith River. Wally is a Contractor who works with machinery and back hoe equipment for developers. Disa works for Cal Trans. They were both gifted and attended gifted programs but did not like the cities and what college was teaching them and chose an alternative life stytle. "I guess you could say they were on the smart end of the Hippie Movement". They had a do your own thing attitude. Eric went to Mira Loma the class of '64, the first class to go the whole four years and graduate. He liked his Art and Math classes. He tried out for football but failed to make the team because he could not make it through practice. Finally, he got in shape in the late 70s and early 80s; he ran and finished several marathons. His motivation for running was to loose weight. Eric had three motorcycles and sold them because he thought he would kill himself. He was in the Art club and was involved in making floats and other school items. He received the most outstanding art student award of his senior class. For fun he and his friend would stay overnight at someone's home, play cards, and eat Cooper's donuts and drink coffee for 10 cents. They would listen to Hank Snow country music. He admits being a wallflower at school dances until he met Sue Hansen, a girl who went to Encina and became his girlfriend. Now, he went to all the dances at both schools. He had a lot of friends at Encina and Mira Loma because hsi sister was only a year younger and she attended Encina. Sue is a teacher in the San Juan Unified School District. Eric went to American River College where he got his general education requirement out of the way and then to Sacramento State where he majored in Art and Ceramics. Eric gained an appreciation for art because he thinks it comes from your inner being. Love of Ceramics started by spending many hours on the creek just playing and making mud figures. Throughout his college year, Viet Nam weighed in his mind and he thought some day he was going to be drafted. While at Sacramento State he met his future wife Cheryl. Cheryl grew up in Tahoe Park. Her father owned a hardware store in Rancho Cordova called "Walker's Hardware". She went to Hiram Johnson High School and they were introduced by her friend Vicky Wallace. They have been married a cool 32 years. Cheryl works at Bank of America at Campus Commons; she is a Teller Supervisor. They like to travel and have been all over Europe and the United States. Eric's favorite hobbies are fishing and gardening. In fact every year immediately after school is out, off he goes for a week long fly fishing trip to Montana. He played Santa Claus for Encina's students for many years. He has given it up, but still plays Santa for the neighborhood on Christmas Eve. Art though is his love. He has four kilns at home where he always has pieces backed up. Last year during the KVIE Art auction his work was highlighted and he was called "Sacramento Icon" for hsi work in Ceramics. He likes comic themes. One of his retirement goals is to have ten tons of clay and go through it completely, eliminate his teaching career and move on to another phase of his life. He wants to complete commissioned work for many clients around California. Soem advice he would give to Encina students is to go as far as they can in education. Also, take care of themselves first and prepare for the future. Be independent first and then get married; it makes for a better relationship. And most of all BUY REAL-ESTATE. His favorite thing about Encina is that it is always changing and challenging. It has been most rewarding. While doing this interview, I found out how sincere and humorous, Eric Dahlin truly is. While you are with him, you always feel good. The students of Encina are very lucky to have him as one of their educators." AMANDA KELLY Diane Schoenborn Kelly 73 and Mike Kelly 73 wrote: "My daughter, the writer.... Joe Lawrence could enter one student's writing in each category (Poetry, Fiction, and Essay) of the American River College High School Writing Contest. He chose only Amanda's essay describing a conflict with a teacher. Amanda tied for first place with a student from Davis High who was also the Poetry winner. The Fiction winner attends Sacramento Waldorf. Each winner will receive a $50 cash prize and publication in and a copy of the Spring 2001 issue of The American River Review. Cool, this will look good on a college application!" REUNIONS If any of the classes have finalized more details, please let me know. The time has come for our 10 year reunion. It's hard to believe that it's here already! It seems like it was yesterday when we were signing yearbooks with tearful goodbyes. Many of us have kept in touch. But as the years go by, people marry, have children, careers and go on with their own lives. Sometimes you lose touch with your dearest friends. Our reunion will be for reuniting with old friends, remembering all the fun times we had and having a great party! As some of you know, I started my own business as an Event Coordinator, Bridal Consultant and Caterer. So when Scott Bennett approached me with the idea of him and I doing the reunion , I happily agreed. Since I plan parties and weddings for a living now, I'm so pleased to be able to do this for our class. Encina High School was so much fun. With great teachers, fun events and great friends. I would have to say that the Class Of 1991 was the most spirited and crazy at Encina and our reunion will reflect that. Our date has finally been set and the location is being finalized right now. I have already hired a friend fo mine who is a DJ and he is great. The rest we are working on. I'm planning on doing a picture video with pictures from high school and pictures of you today. So keep that in mind. Go through your old photo albums and your pictures of you and your families. You will send them straight to me, with your name, phone number and address on the back and they will be returned to you either at the reunion or by mail. I don't have a price per person yet. That will be determined by the response from our class. The location I found is reasonably priced and very elegant. It has a dance floor, full bar, a kitchen just for that banquet room, excellent food and a great staff. To keep our costs down, I talked to the owner and we will have a full bar, not included in the price so people will have to buy their own drinks. Everyone who is still in contact with anyone from our class that is not on the Encina website, please call or e-mail me with their name, phone number and e-mail address if they have one. Even people who did not graduate with us. Some people moved, or went to different schools to graduate. They are still the class of 1991 and we would love to have everyone there. A lot of people have expressed interest in helping out with the reunion. Since I won't be using my staff, (since I am doing this free of charge of course), all the help would be greatly appreciated. So in conclusion, here is the important information. Our reunion date is set for Saturday evening, August 18th, 2001. Please mark this on your calendar and clear your schedule. Your 10 year reunion happens once in a lifetime so we hope to see you all there!!!!! We will be updating you with information via e-mail and by mail. Please e-mail me back with your phone numbers and addresses. This information will just be for my personal use. If there is someone who wants to get a hold of you, I will call or e-mail YOU with THEIR information. I will not give any information out to anyone. Don't forget to start looking for pictures! We will need them early to do the video. We will also have a photographer there to take pictures. So anyone who wants to help decorate the backdrop for this, let me know. It's going to be the same style photos as our homecoming and prom pictures. You will have the option to buy packages from them just like our dances from school. Here is how to reach Scott Bennett or myself: My e-mail address is ginabsmith@hotmail.com or eventsbygeorgina@hotmail.com My phone number is (916) 635-7958 If you are calling out of the area, you can call my 800 number at 1-800-496-2935 PIN# 17 Scott Bennett's e-mail is cjbennett@jps.net Scott's phone number is (916) 480-0732 I'll look forward to hearing from you soon! ROBERTA FAHN 70 Kathie Kloss 67 came across this article in the Bee... Family fears street crime, not terrorists By Gary Delsohn, Bee Staff Writer (Published Dec. 2, 1996) JERUSALEM — When Roberta Fahn leaves Israel, her home of 20 years, for a visit to Sacramento, the home she left behind, her anxiety level goes way up. She worries far less about the well-being of her two small children in Jerusalem, a city with 3,000 years of political violence seared into its streets, than in Sacramento's suburbs. "At my parents' house in Sacramento, I say, 'You can't play in the front yard.' They don't get it," she said of Rafaela, 5, and Daniell, 6-1/2. "If I told them, "Don't talk to strangers,' they'd think I was nuts. Any person in (Israel) will walk up to a child and begin to talk with them. We don't worry about that here." That's because violent crime in Israel is just a fraction of what it is in the United States. Rapes are rare. Child kidnappings and carjackings are almost unheard-of. Women, young children and the elderly think nothing of walking the streets alone late at night. Fahn, 44, a public relations consultant intimately familiar with life both in Israel and in the United States, where she was born and raised, said it's only when she and her husband take the kids back to California that she really feels anxious about her family's safety. "On a daily basis, we are about 1,000 times more loose and lax with them here than when we are in America," she said of the kids. "When we get into the airport or Europe on a trip back, I completely forget I have to hold their hands and keep my eyes constantly on them." She's steadfast in her assessment despite a series of recent terrorist attacks. Scores died earlier this year when suicide bombers, young Palestinian men on a holy crusade to derail ongoing peace talks, blew up two crowded Jerusalem buses. Similar incidents also occurred in Tel Aviv, a city Israelis like to say is relatively immune from such violence. In September, more violence erupted when Israel opened the entrance to a historic tunnel near the Arabs' holy Al Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. More than 75 people were killed. For more than a week, it seemed as if Israel was again at war. "If things are tense, I'm apt not to take the kids to public gatherings," she said over lunch in a trendy Jerusalem cafe three blocks from her office. "I won't let them go downtown. I won't let them ride the bus." Most days, however, the only mayhem in the streets comes from the notoriously aggressive Israeli drivers. "It's really a very safe country," said Lichai Orquin, a 16-year-old high school student from Bat Yam, a small city on the Mediterranean Sea shore just south of Tel Aviv. "Israelis don't shoot and kill each other for no reason. You see people out all hours of the night, until morning. Occasionally there is terrorism and some mothers won't let their kids go to the malls, but it is safe." Much of that sense of safety comes from the high visibility of armed soldiers, police and private security guards. It's common in Jerusalem to see dozens of uniformed soldiers, with M-16s or Uzis strapped across their backs, on the streets, in the malls, at the city's holy sites. The uniforms have become even more common since the recent violence. "Let's face it," said Fahn's husband, Stuart Schoffman, "if you go to a Wells Fargo bank in Sacramento and a guy walks in with an Uzi machine gun, you're likely to do a double take and run out of there. Here if it happens, you don't even do a double take. It's nothing." Fahn's father, Alex, a retired Sacramento businessman who spends three or four months a year in Jerusalem along with his wife, said he, too, feels much safer in Israel than back home. "I wouldn't walk in downtown Sacramento after dark or on the K Street Mall for anything," he said. "Here, I walk around at three in the morning without a second thought. Everybody does." A 1970 graduate of Sacramento's Encina High School, Fahn visited Israel during her junior year in college. Captivated by the country, she moved there 20 years ago. She eventually went to work for AIPAC, the American-Israeli Political Action Committee, and now runs a small public relations and political strategy firm. Schoffman, a native of the San Francisco Bay Area, moved to Israel about eight years ago. He is a journalist and writes a column for the bimonthly Jerusalem Report, a political magazine. What do their kids make of all this? "It (terrorism) happens on buses and we went on a trip from school around that time and we were somewhat scared," Dani said. "We didn't know if it was the same number bus that was blown up. "And when we go to a place outside the city or far from the city, they will ask for lots of parents to come and the parents will have a weapon. I feel safe." When he and his sister visit their grandparents in the Sierra Oaks section of Sacramento, Dani and Rafi know Mom and Dad won't dream of letting them stray from the block to visit a pal. In Jerusalem, they do that nearly every day. BIOS ROGER NIELLO 66 Courtesy of Kathie Kloss 67... TECHNOLOGY At long last, a new use for California's useless wall outlets. Powerline, a new technology that connects high-speed telecommunications networks with electrical transformers on the power grid, and ultimately to the home, may make high-speed Internet access via electricity cables a reality as soon as this year. In fact, a number of ventures at the CeBIT technology fair in Germany say Powerline will be available by summer, and a Florida company claims it plans to bring its technology to market by June. This is encouraging news for a technology that has been waylaid at the development stage for decades, largely thanks to daunting technical problems. While skeptics warn that the technology -- which isn't yet capable of seamlessly offering the transmission speeds it claims to -- is not quite ready for commercial deployment, Powerline has found many proponents. Indeed, an industry umbrella group in called HomePlug has received strong backing from a number of larger technology concerns, among them Cisco, 3Com, and Intel, and for good reason. As Amit Yudan, director of Main.net Communication, a company developing Powerline technology, notes, "everybody has electric wiring already all over their house. This turns every socket in the house into a communication point." ZERO TOLERANCE Zero-Tolerance Watch A Maryland elementary school has banned the game of tag. Joan Briscoe, principal of West Annapolis Elementary, tells the Capital newspaper that the game violates the school's "no touching" policy. But the paper reports that "although the county's sexual harassment policy does prohibit 'unwanted' touching," there is no blanket ban on touching. Huntley Cross, an Anne Arundel County school administrator, tells the Capital: "There are good touches and bad touches that children are taught."
