Date: Fri Mar 9, 2001 12:27 pm Subject: Encina Update (nannini/reunions/greer/headlines/netminder/homecoming/siblings/search/whats new) ENCINA ALUMNI, No sponsor this week... BOB NANNINI 73 This week's Sacramento Magazine (www.sacmag.com) includes an article "Single in Sacramento" by Dawn Blunk and Lynne Marie Rominger. Bob Nannini 73, a fellow 73 classmate also known as "Top 5 Bob" for his weekly radio spot, was listed as one of the 25 local singles in Sacramento. Way to go Bob! Unfortunately, the online article did not include the entire text of the article and Bob's section was missing, although I'm hopeful that some kind soul will type or scan it for me for a future update. I've included an excerpt from the online article below: "SINGLES ORGANIZATIONS Sacramento boasts numerous social organizations oriented toward singles that regularly offer events for individuals of all ages, interests and backgrounds. For information on many of these organizations, such as the Professionals Guild, River City Adventures, Parents Without Partners, Sierra Club Singles and Sunday Singles Bridge, pick up a copy of Singles News Magazine or go to www.singlesnewssmagazine.com to view an online directory that lists dozens of club descriptions, phone numbers and hyperlinks. NEW MILLENNIUM PICKUP JOINTS Forget the bars and the nightclubs. According to area singles, here are the three top places to meet others: • Coffeehouses. There’s something about the sanctuary of a warm coffeehouse that breeds friendliness and companionship. And approaching someone you think looks promising in the amour department in a crowded espresso bar is as easy as, “Excuse me, is this seat taken?” • Supermarkets. Apparently, a whole lot of chick-watching by the chutney and dude-ogling by the oranges occurs at your local food store. So don’t fuss, ladies and gentlemen, develop a taste for grocery shopping and go get ’em! • Bookstores. Pick a bookstore, any bookstore. That brainy, bookish babe may await you in one of the aisles, which, by the way, can prove to be narrow, and thereby, perfect for passing and making eye contact with whomever you have set your sights on. TOP 5 TURN-ONS FOR MEN 1. “Hot body”—As much as women everywhere wish this item did not rank numero uno, it does. Guys—as visual beasts—rated “hot body” as the biggest turn-on. Think stereotypes here. Well-endowed mammary glands, long legs and firm tush. Need we say more? 2. Confidence and self-assurance—“If a woman walks into the room and she gives off a ‘confident’ air, I want her,” said one mid-30s male. Essentially, men find themselves attracted to a woman who really doesn’t need them and knows it. 3. Well-groomed and stylish—From head to toe, she’s put together. A perfectly manicured, coiffed and clad woman tips the red needle from cold to hot on the “turn-on-o-meter” with men. 4. Intelligence—Now here’s the rub. A hot body may rank as the No. 1 turn-on, but if the girl with the gams and glands doesn’t possess a brain, she’d better run off to Oz and get one. One guy even proposed that a smart woman who wears glasses is an even greater turn-on because, “You just imagine her taking off those glasses and then other things.” 5. Pretty smile—How sweet! A pretty smile invites guys to begin a conversation. Very sexy, many say. “If she’s got a pretty smile and it’s directed at me, I always go over,” said one guy. TOP 5 TURN-OFFS FOR MEN 1. Body odor/too much makeup (close tie)—If you smell ripe or you cake on the Max Factor, forget moonlit cruises and bouquets of roses. 2. Foul mouth/dirty words—They may swear like sailors around the guys, but men don’t want their princesses to spew vulgarities. “Way tacky” and “yuck” were the phrases used to describe women who swear. The only exception: in an “intimate” situation. (Blush!) 3. Bad breath—Get out the floss, the toothpaste, the mouthwash and the mints. Although the majority of men who gave this answer reeked of beer or French roast, apparently a sour mouth won’t earn a woman any lip locks with them. 4. Desperation—Like a wolf smells weakness, men seem to smell (or think they can) a woman who desperately wants a relationship—whether for the night or life. Don’t want him too much, and he’ll find you more attractive. 5. Shallow, stuck-up or too full of herself—They want you pretty; they want you well-kept; they want you sexy. But they don’t want you to know how pretty, well-kept and sexy you are. Big egos earn women zeros with men. TOP 5 TURN-ONS FOR WOMEN 1. Sense of humor—Tickle her funny bone, guys, and win her heart. We can’t stress this enough. The response was truly overwhelming. Virtually every woman asked gave this answer as the No. 1 turn-on. “A guy can even be unattractive, but if he makes me laugh he gets better looking,” advises one 35-year-old single woman. 2. Warm smile; kind, pretty eyes (virtual tie)—The men like a great smile, and so do the women. Smiles are invitations for something more. But eyes also ranked high as a turn-on factor. “In combination, it’s deadly sexy,” proclaims one woman. 3. Great, masculine voice—Could women swoon more deeply for a deep voice? No. 4. Confident, “take-charge” attitude (warning: not abrasive or aggressive)— Well, well. Women like a man who is confident but not cocky, who plans the date and follows through, who comes right up to a woman he sees and doesn’t beat around the bush but asks her out. Wishy-washy men with trepidation need not apply. 5. Good dancer—Hellooooooooo? Women love to dance. TOP 5 TURN-OFFS FOR WOMEN 1. No job/no car—Ladies agree that a lack of employment shows a lack of character, ambition and strength. And duh! You need a car to take a lady out on a date. 2. Too flirty/checking out all the women in the room—How rude! say many women. Don’t scan the room while you should be paying attention to the babe in front of you. You come off as a player—something women hate. 3. Spitting on the ground/using chewing tobacco and spitting—Don’t dredge up a big phlegm ball and hack it to the curb. According to one 50-something woman, “I’d rather have some guy look around at the other women in the room than suck a wad of chewing tobacco, spit it out, and then try to slap a kiss on me.” 4. Superficial/obsessed by looks/egotistical—“Oh, I can’t stand when he looks at himself in the rear-view mirror over and over. He may think he looks good with each peek, but to me he gets uglier and uglier each time!” offers a giggling, middle-aged woman. We guess that some things transcend gender: Just like men don’t like a big ego, neither do women. 5. Into pornography and strip bars—Surprise! Hang back from the strip club and cancel that subscription to Penthouse; women find a man who delves into the world of pornography a total turn-off. “It’s about respect for women; a guy says a lot about how he’ll treat you and his morals if he frequents topless bars. You don’t want him!” confirms one 20-something woman. CHEESY PICKUP LINES “Both your parents must be scientists, because baby, you’re the bomb!” “Your father must be a thief because he stole the stars from the sky and put them into your eyes.” Check the tag on his/her shirt and say, “I am just looking for the ‘made in heaven’ label because you look like an angel.” “Are you tired? Why? Because you’ve been running around in my mind all night long.” “Didn’t we go to different high schools together?” “Has anyone ever told you that you look like (insert name of celebrity here)?” “If I had a rose for every time I thought of you, I would walk through a garden forever.”" REUNIONS If any of the classes have finalized more details, please let me know.
