ALUMNI WEBSITES Thanks for Carol Markell 78 for telling me about the planetalumni.com website. I located a few more Encina alumni there. For all of you who have joined classmates.com, beware that folks who find your listing cannot send you a message unless they pay money to join classmates.com. I have joined just so that I can email alumni about the Encina website. Even so, classmates.com has by far the most Encina alumni listings, even though alternatives like planetalumni.com or alumni.net offer free memberships. SIBLINGS Lots of activity. BIOS LINDA POHTO 67 homepage: http://communities.msn.com/OntheLooseUKStyle/homepage Occupation: Registered Nurse Bio: Attended American River and then Chico State. Graduated with a BSN in Nursing and Public Health. Married Eldon Allen and moved to Sonoma. Worked at Sonoma Valley Hospital in the Emergency Room and ICU. Loved living in the Valley of the Moon. Bought my horse, Sir Merlyn, who was 4 months old. He is now 28 y.o. Moved to land between Auburn and Grassvalley. Commuted to work at American River Hospital. I worked in ICU and CCU. Eldon and I divorced. Later met Rich Radan. We lived together for 4 years here in Sacramento and then decided to get married. Have 2 children, Trevor, who is now 22 years old, and Courtney, 19 y.o. They are both attending college. I continued to work for American River Hospital, but when I had Courtney, I changed to a mid-management position in Infection Control. Neither math or public speaking were areas that I thought I would ever work in but both were required in this job. When I took this job I thought it would be quiet, but my first year was the beginning of the AIDS epidemic. I held this position for 15 years and then changed to Employee Health. AR was bought by Mercy. I quit my job on Feb, 15, 2001. My husband is managing a project for Deloitte Consulting in Newcastle England. He left on 2-12 and I will be leaving in 4 to 5 weeks. Hope you are all well and happy. Friends: Janet DeBacco, Nina Paladino, Charlene Jenkins, Kathy Wehr, and Janie Moran. I have lost contact with Kathy Wehr. Hobbies: Horseback riding swimming, walking with my dogs. Kids: Trevor and Courtney are as different as night and day. Trevor is quiet, a little shy. Very motivated and hard working. Has a few very good friends. Went to Europe for a month when he was 16, loves to travel. He is very excited about coming to Europe to visit and travel. Courtney is outgoing. She has a passion for horseback riding. She started English lessons when she was 7 y.o. She has shown in Hunt Seat over fencesand flat and Jumpers. She now works for her trainer giving lessons and training horses. Doesn't like to travel unless it is for a horse show. Does not want to be away from her horse. She will probably only come to Europe to see a horse show and or look for warmbloods in Ireland. March 1, 2001 Search No Further: Google Is the Best Search Engine By WALTER S. MOSSBERG WHAT IS THE MOST useful site on the Web? Well, the answer might vary widely, depending on whom you ask. But I'd like to propose a candidate: Google, which is simply the best search site I've ever used. Google (www.google.com) is an invaluable asset in navigating through the vast ocean of material on the Web. If this praise sounds unusually enthusiastic coming from a normally skeptical columnist, that's because Google is everything a search engine should be: thorough, smart, speedy and honest. There are other good ways to look things up on the Web. Yahoo!, which is really a directory created by human editors and not an automated search engine, is still very useful, partly because humans sometimes see things computers can't and organize them in a superior way. LookSmart, another edited directory, is also very good. And the AltaVista, AOL and MSN search engines all have their fans. In my opinion, however, Google tops them all. Like all search engines, it's powered by computer programs, not people. But it manages to combine the advantages of automated searching -- speed and scope -- with an uncanny ability to zero in on what you meant. Unlike some other search sites, Google doesn't rig the order or content of search results to favor paid advertisers. It doesn't try to be a portal, loaded with news headlines, graphics and other detritus. Its looks are clean and simple, even though it's packed with special features that make searches even more powerful. TO TEST MY OWN positive impressions of Google, I asked my research assistant, Danielle Belopotosky, to conduct five searches of her choice using Google and six competitors: AltaVista, AOL, MSN, Yahoo, LookSmart and Excite. I asked her only to count results which appeared in the first couple of screens. In every case, Google found what she wanted, and usually among the first few results returned. Some of the other search sites also did well on certain of her queries, but none came close to Google's performance across the board. For instance, in a search for the Civil War general Joseph Hooker, eight of the first 10 hits on Google were relevant, including the first two. On AltaVista, only four of the first 10 results were accurate, and none of the first six. In a search for "first college jump shot," a basketball trivia question Danielle had recently encountered, Google provided a site that offered the answer (Kenny Sailors, Wyoming, 1946) in its second listing. On MSN, the 14th site found was relevant. None of the other search sites, except Yahoo, came up with anything useful in the first couple of screens. And Yahoo only succeeded because it uses Google to supplement its own results. When you go to Google's site, you're greeted by a mostly white screen, bearing a large colorful Google logo and little else. There's a box for entering your search term, and then two buttons. One, called Google Search, returns a list of possible results. The other, called "I'm Feeling Lucky," instantly takes you to the first site Google finds for your search, without displaying the list of results. Google ranks its search results using a proprietary page-ranking system that's partly based on how often a site is linked to from other sites. The results are very intelligent, usually placing the stuff you want higher in the listings than other search sites do. Each result is also a wealth of information. It contains a short summary of the page and a link to a snapshot of the page, called a cached version, that Google saved when it first indexed the site. This cached version can be very handy if the page has since been altered or removed, and the material you're seeking was deleted. There's also a link to a list of sites Google considers similar, even though they're not exactly on point. For instance, a search result for Ford has a link to similar pages about GM, Chrysler and Toyota. IF YOU ENTER a company's stock symbol, Google will usually generate a link to its stock quote. If you enter a street address, with city and state, it will provide links to maps of the address. You can turn on a filter that will block pornographic results. You can also search within a specific Web site, and do much more. Google doesn't cover the whole Web. No search engine does. But it claims more pages than any other search site -- more than 600 million pages fully indexed, and another 600 million or so pages on which partial information has been gleaned because they are mentioned on other sites. And it's wicked fast. Results seem to appear almost instantly. Finally, Google is honest. It doesn't sell companies the right to have their Web sites listed higher in its results than its normal ranking system would allow. Google does sell two-line text ads that appear at the top of the screen and are based on the search term entered. But these can't be confused with the real search results, as they are shaded in color, carry the label "sponsored link," and are separated from the list of results by white space. Google also sells another type of ad that is linked to search terms, but it's even more distinct from search results, appearing as a colored text box off to the side of the page. I know that people have other favorite search sites, and whatever works for them is fine. But Google is a beacon in a sea of confusion. A POLICE OFFICER SPEAKS Bruce Hunt 73 sent me this thought provoking article... Subject: A POLICE OFFICER SPEAKS Well, Mr. Citizen, it seems you've figured me out. I seem to fit neatly into the category where you've placed me. I'm stereotyped, standardized, characterized, classified, grouped, and always typical. Unfortunately, the reverse is true. I can never figure you out. From birth you teach your children that I'm the bogeyman, then you're shocked when they identify with my traditional enemy...the criminal! You accuse me of coddling criminals...until I catch your kids doing wrong. You may take an hour for lunch and several coffee breaks each day, but point me out as a loafer for having one cup. You pride yourself on your manners, but think nothing of disrupting my meals with your troubles. You raise hell with the guy who cuts you off in traffic, but let me catch you doing the same thing and I'm picking on you. You know all the traffic laws...but you've never gotten a single ticket you deserve. You shout "foul" if you observe me driving fast to a call, but raise the roof if I take more than ten seconds to respond to your complaint. You call it part of my job if someone strikes me, but call it Police brutality if I strike back. You wouldn't think of telling your dentist how to pull a tooth or your doctor how to take out an appendix, yet you are always willing to give me pointers on the law. You talk to me in a manner that would get you a bloody nose from anyone else, but expect me to take it without batting an eye.You yell something's got to be done to fight crime, but you can't be bothered to get involved. You have no use for me at all, but of course it's OK if I change a flat for your wife, deliver your child in the back of the Patrol car, or perhaps save your son's life with mouth to mouth breathing, or work many hours overtime looking for your lost Daughter. So, Mr. Citizen, you can stand there on your soapbox and rant and rave about the way I do my work, calling me every name in the book, but never stop to think that your property, family, or maybe even your life depends on me or one of my buddies. Yes, Mr. Citizen, it's me...the cop! The author of this article was Trooper Mitchell Brown of the Virginia State Police. He was killed in the line of duty two months after writing the article. As a salute to the millions police officers who put their lives on the line for us everyday, please pass this on.
