Date: Fri Jan 26, 2001 1:23 pm Subject: Encina Update (directories/mailing lists/66/77/ziliotto/cortopassi/begg/homecoming/bee/siblings/bios/obituaries/macromedia/whats new) ENCINA ALUMNI, This update is sponsored by Dan Mayes 78. I've known Dan for many years, although I had lost track of him until starting the Encina website back in 1998. I was pleased to find out that Dan is a doctor in Colorado, married with kids, and doing very well. Thanks Dan! Rosemary Paiva 90 was the 1500th subscriber to the Encina Update mailing list. CLASS DIRECTORIES If you haven't done so recently, please check that your entry in your class directory is up to date. If you have a "care of" listing, I would ask you to let me list your email address so that friends can contact you directly. I get an amazing amount of "care of" mail which I must MANUALLY forward. This has turned out to be one of the most time consuming "chores" of being Encina webmaster. I would greatly appreciate it if those of you with "care of" listings would give me permission to list your email address. And while you are at it, please check that your siblings are also listed in their respective directory and that their information is also up to date. I am constantly amazed to hear from alumni who "discover" the Encina website, when their siblings have been aware of the website for months or years. Please, please, let me know if you have siblings who attended Encina so I can list them in the class directories. I will refer any inquiries to you. This is the best way we have of finding folks and expanding the universe of known Encina alumni. You can access the class directories here: http://www.encinahighschool.com/classwebs.htm Thanks! MAILING LISTS I would like to ask folks to please refrain from sending virus warnings to the class mailing lists. Almost all of them turn out to be false. If you feel you MUST pass on a virus warning, please confirm that it is not a false warning at any of the numerous virus hoax websites. In addition, please refrain from mailing chain letters and humor to your class mailing list. Try and keep your email at least somewhat Encina related. Thanks! CLASSES REUNIONS Time to start thinking about your reunions, those of you in the classes of 61, 66, 71, 76, 81, 86, 91 and 96. Please write if your class is planning a reunion this year. So far I know that 61, 66 and 81 are planning reunions this year... CLASS OF 66 Kathy Cooper Luken 66 wrote: "We have a date and location for the 35th reunion of the Class of 1966! The reunion will be on Saturday, September 15, 2001, in Sacramento. We will need help in the planning of registration, food, decorations, memorabilia, and the usual areas. I am interested in hearing from volunteers!" CLASS OF 77 My sister Laurie Lau 77 sent me her Greer Elementary pictures: The captions are incomplete so please write if you can identify some of the unknown students. Besides Laurie, I recognized James Collentine, Richard Kendall, Cheryl Giguere, Derek Reade and Paul Knepprath from the old neighborhood. We have a reasonably complete set of Greer pictures spanning the years from 1960-1975 now as my brother Bert Lau 81 and my 73 classmates have also sent in their Greer pictures: NANCY ZILIOTTO 74 As I wrote last week, Nancy passed away January 16th. This obituary is courtesy of Kathie Kloss 67. Variety.com, January 24, 2001 NANCY ZILIOTTO Nancy Ziliotto, a longtime Warner Bros. employee, died Jan. 16 of adrenal cancer in West Hills, Calif. She was 45. During her 14 years at Warners, she worked as an administrator for numerous executives at the studio, and last year a screenplay co-written by Ziliotto, "Gabriel's Gift," was sold to Marcarelli Prods. Before joining Warner Bros., she was a singer and songwriter in the band Circa in the 1980s. She is survived by her daughter and parents. Contributions in her name can be made to the Starlight Foundation. Nancy's memorial service was Thursday, January 25th. Close friend Lucia Churches 73 flew to LA to attend and sent me this note: "I’d like to share a few memories of my dear friend, Nancy Ziliotto, who sadly passed away on January 16, 2001. My life was touched by her and I will miss her everyday. Lucia Churches, Class of 1973 To describe Nancy’s personality to any one who didn’t know her, would be almost impossible. She was amazing. Nancy had energy, humor and creativity that were electric. You wanted to be near her. You wanted to listen to her every word as she told a funny story or created a living screenplay from even the most mundane situation. She found humor in everything. Her wit and intelligence were uncanny. She could make you laugh as no one else could. But there was also another side of Nancy, a side rich with love, compassion and warmth. She was the first to check on you if you were down. Even after she got sick, she was always there, ready and available with empathy and conversation. She was loyal and consistent, never forgetting to keep in touch and to stay close. After high school Nancy moved from Sacramento to Southern California. I stayed here. Normally that would have been a deficit to a friendship, but instead, ours grew deeper. For over 30 years our close bond was sustained by long distance calls, letters and visits when she came home. I think about how unique and marvelous that kind of friendship was…sharing intimate feelings about life, love and loss…from teenagers, to women in our mid forties. Nancy and I covered it all. And we laughed a lot too. It seems so strange to me, now, that some of us will grow older, while Nancy’s image will forever be frozen in time. Nancy and I also shared a deep love for animals. We’d talk about our cherished pets as if they were our children. She loved her dogs. Then, four years ago, Nancy was ecstatic when she was able to adopt a precious little girl named Julianna. This was the pinnacle of her life! Her world revolved around her new baby. She brought Julianna to Sacramento as often as she could and sent pictures every few months. It was wonderful to see the incredible love those two had for each other. I’ve never lost a friend before. Nancy was the first. I can still hear her voice and her great laugh. I will remember them always. Nancy’s four year old daughter, Julianna, will come back to Sacramento and live with her grandparents, Emily and Gino Ziliotto, who love her dearly. I look forward to being part of Julianna’s life, and to keeping the memory of her mother, my friend, Nancy Ziliotto, always alive." Vicki Flint 74 wrote: The last time I saw Nancy was in the hospital on New Years. She had been in the hospital several times over the last year on the Oncology Unit I work on Pasadena. I tell you she fought to the end and kept her cheerful diposition even when she was having horrible pain. In spite of her pain she insisted on getting up and going to the kitchen herself to fill her water pitcher. All the nurses who cared for her agreed that she was a wonderful person. It saddens me that she's gone but now she isn't suffering anymore. It is really a small world and we never know when our paths will meet again. JOE CORTOPASSI 76 I've been corresponding with Joe since he signed up. Besides co-founding Forte Software, which was acquired by Sun Microsystems in October 1999, his wife Denise was part of the seven member American Coaster Enthusiast team which annihilated the old world record of 29 roller coasters ridden in a single day. As part of the GRP (Guiness Roller-coaster Project), she rode 39 roller coasters in 24 hours. They were followed around by a Discovery Channel television crew which captured the entire 24 hour odyssey for an hour long program scheduled to air this spring. They started their journey on a Saturday at 5pm at the Giant Dipper on the Santa Cruz Boardwalk and ended at the Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia, CA at 5pm Sunday. Please check out: www.cortalau.com for details. The Discovery Channel coverage is here: LYNN BEGG Vice Principal Stephen Gatewood wrote this article about Encina teacher Lynn Begg in the Bulldog Talks newsletter. "Who knows a parent who would give this sound advice to their children? 'You don't tell people your age or your dress size. They don't need to know'. Lynn's eccentric mother gave her this quirky message and others on a daily basis and they have become part of her life. Her mother, Florence, is a watercolor artist who continues to paint and sell her nature paintings in Oregon. Lynn's stepfather, Harry, was the high school principal and then the founding president of Umpqua Community College. She has one sister, Judith. Lynn went to Roseburg High School, where she was very active in student activities. She was student body treasurer, president of the French Club, member of the honor society, and took ballet lessons on the side. One of her fond memories was when she was selected Senior Class Carnival princess. Her favorite class was Mr Bodine's English, because he was lively and taught lots of poetry. Literature was her passion, especially Herman Hesse, John Steinbeck, and Emily Dickinson. You would think that the reason Lynn went into teaching was to emulate her dad, but in fact she resisted that profession, wanting to have her own identity, but eventually realized teaching English was her destiny. After high school, Lynn went to Willamette University in Salem, Oregon, for one year. She found the university's rules too stifling regarding such things as no girls wearing jeans or pants on campus, no staying out past 10pm, and no missing chapel each week. So she transferred to Oregon State University in Corvallis and loved it. There, in Psychology 101, she met her first husband, Jay, a pharmacy student. They got married and had two children, Cindy and Cara, while Lynn was completing her degree in English education. After graduation, they moved to Santa Barbara, and Lynn taught at Bishop Garcia Diego High School. Nuns and priests were in charge and Lynn enjoyed the school's high standards, except for the uniforms and mandatory measuring of the girls' skirt lengths to verify the maximum inches above the knees. Of course, the girls simply waited till after the measuring and rolled up their waistbands! Lynn felt Santa Barbara was heaven on Earth, with beaches and mountains in close proximity and the destinations for many fun outings. She and her family had a small ranch outside of town with horses, dogs, chickens, and rabbits. But eventually the Santa Barbara no-growth policy skyrocketed property taxes and her life in Santa Barbara ended. She gathered her daughters and moved to Sacramento. In Sacramento she became an account executive at an advertising agency where she worked for six years before opening her own agency. She and her staff had clients, such as banks and the brick industry of California, for which they created billboard, TV, radio, magazine, and newspaper campaigns. Bank annual reports were a specialty. After eight years in her agency, she grew tired of the constant demands of clients and the terrifying flights in private jets. About this time, she met Jim Begg at a fitness club and during some racquet ball matches they fell in love and threw their two families, five kids in all, together and got married. Jim inspired Lynn to return to her first love, teaching. In 1990 she closed the agency, applied at Encina on a Friday and began teaching on a Monday. She soon fell in loe with the students and community at Encina. She loves the diversity and the multicultural aspect here. She is now English Department chairperson and Academic Decathlon advisor. Asked what advice she would give her students, she said, 'Believe in yourself, eat oranges, and get all the education you can'. Lynn's hobbies include walking with her husband on the bike trail, where they walk four miles several times a week. She and her husband also enjoy travelling. One exciting adventure was hiking in the jungle on the Yucatan Peninsula to ancient remote Mayan ruins. Another trip, with her daughter and son-in-law, was across Canada, seeing 3000 miles of exquisite scenery. Lynn also enjoys snorkeling, biking, and numerous pets. Above all, she loves reading. I found this interview to be a totally wonderful event. We laughed and laughed about things that have happened in our lives. Lynn Begg has a wonderful, gregarious, wholesome personality that radiates enthusiasm and charm. Encina is blessed to have her. HEATHER SMITH 91 Occupation: Director of Health Information Management Bio: After our sophmore year, I moved and finished school at Mira Loma High. I was not happy about this move and did not like going there. After graduating, I then moved to Austin, Texas for 7 years and went to college out there. I went to Austin Community College for a few years and worked at a 485 bed hospital in the medical records department. After a few years of school, I needed to pick a career. I then got accepted at Southwest Texas State University in the Health Information Management Program. I graduated in 1997 and received my Bachelor of Science Degree in Health Information Management. I then went on to pass the National Exam to become a Registered Health Information Management Administrator. I worked at St. David's Hospital for 6 years in the Medical Records Deparment . After graduating, I was promoted to evening shift supervisor. I gained a lot of management experience and after a year decided that I needed a change. I then moved back home to be near my family. I love being back. I now am the Director of Medical Records at a Psychiatric Hospital in Sacramento. I enjoy my job a lot. I have also met a wonderful guy, who I am engaged to marry on August 4th, 2001. Justin and I have been together for 2 years now. He is truly wonderful and I knew he was the one I was going to spend the rest of my life with after our second date. Unfortunately, he was in a horrible jet-skiing accident last July and compound fractured both bones in both legs. We went through some really tough times, but I believe that it has brought us closer together. He is doing much better and is finally starting to be able to walk again. He and I are wonderful together and I couldn't ask for anything better. Trivia: I have traveled all over. JOHN ZUPAN The Sacramento Bee, July 7, 1995 ZUPAN IS DEAD AT 51 AFTER BATTLE WITH MS John Zupan, a popular fixture on the Sacramento-area high school football coaching scene for more than 20 years, died late Tuesday night (July 5) at his east Sacramento home. He was 51. Known as "Coach Zupe" by his players and peers, Zupan was stricken with multiple sclerosis, an incurable disease that attacks the nervous system. "It's a big loss," said Dick Sperbeck, who coached Zupan at Bishop Armstrong High School and later worked with him at Christian Brothers. "We were all so impressed with his fortitude, the way he handled the disease. No one ever saw him get down, and that was his character." Zupan was a Bee All-Metro linebacker/running back at Bishop Armstrong, graduating in 1962. He played at Sacramento City College, where he experienced his first setback from the disease, before coaching at CBS, Encina, and Del Campo from 1965 to 1985. His legs failing him, Zupan would lean against the press box to coach his Del Campo teams before electing to use a golf cart on the sideline. That sort of determination touched those around him. Even though the Sacramento County Sheriff's football team he coached lost to the Police in the 1983 Pig Bowl charity game, Zupan was voted the Most Inspirational Player. In an interview two years ago, Zupan said the necessity of the car especially bothered him because it served as a reminder of how the disease had denied him use of his legs. "And I hated riding it because I didn't want the players to think I was better than they were or that I was taking the easy way, but the sad truth was, I needed the thing," Zupan said. "Coaching finally got to be too much, so I had to stop." Mel Fontes, an assistant at Valley High School who coached with Zupan at CBS, remembers one poignant story. "One time he fell off his cart and Dick (Sperbeck) and Dave (Hoskins) and I rushed to help him," he said. "'No, I can do it!'" he told us. He worked his way back onto that cart, offered us a beer and laughed about the whole thing. That's the kind of proud man he was." MACROMEDIA The Encina website is so large that I'm having problems managing it with Microsoft Frontpage. I'm thinking of switching to Macromedia's Dreamweaver/Fireworks package, which seems to be the software of choice for serious website development. Frontpage really bogs down once you have several hundred pages to manage. I've had to divide the Encina website into numerous subwebs to keep it manageable. I've located one alumni who works at Macromedia thanks to CJ Dow 87. But I was wondering whether anyone else works at Macromedia or has friends at Macromedia who can get employee discounts on Macromedia software. Thanks to those of you who wrote last week with advice or suggestions regarding Frontpage and/or Dreamweaver.
