Sent: Wednesday, October 11, 2000 7:01 PM Subject: [Encina Update] Encina Update (clothing/rally/preparty/homecoming/parade/float/rally/rsvps/committee/caleb greenwood/siblings/missing/classes/bios/deaths/wireless/whats new) ENCINA ALUMNI, I will be sending out two updates a week until after the homecoming party next week. This week's update is sponsored by Andrea Howard Bickham 83. Encina teacher Joe Lawrence is the 1200th subscriber to the Encina Update mailing list! It only took a month to add the last 100 subscribers. This week I received an rsvp from Encina teacher Cheryl Chambers, Encina vice principal Cornelia Whitaker and Encina teacher Stafford Boyd! For those of you who don't know Stafford Boyd 88, he was the student activities advisor before he left Encina and moved to Colorado. We worked closely together on last year's homecoming party and the students loved him. Stafford has only been in Colorado a few months but got "permission" to come back for the homecoming party this year. He was going to keep it a secret but I talked him out of it. Although it would have been a great surprise to keep it a secret, it would have only surprised those who were already committed. Whereas by spreading the word, I hope that some of Stafford's ex-students and maybe some of the current staff would be persuaded to attend in order to see Stafford on his visit "home". This especially applies to recent Encina alumni, as we have NO rsvps from the classes of 1995 to 2000. Stafford will be at the rally, the party and the game! Be there! Joe Lawrence sent me this email: "I am in my last year of teaching--the district is offering an attractive "retirement incentive" and I'm going to take it. I plan to work on the house and garden we purchased for my daughter, her husband, and their daughter to try to make it a showplace. Also want to do some traveling: Italy, Greece, England, China, Turlock--you know, places that are really foreign. I don't plan to attend the reunion. I do best when groups are divided into units of about 30 and I'm giving em a writing assignment." You can write Joe at jnjlawrence@earthlink.net . Your writing assignment is to convince Joe to attend the homecoming party. You get an A if he comes, otherwise you flunk. Get writing! If you are coming to the pregame party, please write me at harlan@rambus.com and tell me how many people you are bringing. I'd like to get an headcount. I am especially interested in the number of you who are bringing your kids to the pregame party to get a rough estimate. The homecoming party will cost around $1000 for insurance, custodians and security. Any contributions towards the costs would be much appreciated. Many thanks to those of you who have contributed towards the homecoming party expenses! If you plan to contribute, please do so sooner rather than later, as the amount we collect will affect our plans... ALUMNI CLOTHING The deadline was 5pm today. No more orders will be accepted. Cynthia Connell 73 gets the last minute award for placing her order at 4:52PM. Carolyn Teel Rand 73 wrote: "I also told a member of the class of 63 about the website and our reunion. I was down at Disneyland in September and I had on my Encina T-shirt and she came up to me and asked me if I was from Sacramento... It is a great way to advertise for our cause." If you have questions about the alumni clothing, contact Lorna at lgragg@CIWMB.ca.gov or 916-255-2886. This is a tremendous amount of work so please be nice to Lorna, who is doing this voluntarily. HOMECOMING RALLY *** NEW *** We're getting a good size crowd for the rally! Teachers Stafford Boyd 88, John Knurr and Orlin Schuler will also be at the rally. Linh Smith 94 wrote: Doralynn Co c/o '94 and I will be attending the homecoming rally. We are interseted in being rally judges. During high school we were both cheerleaders so this would give us great pleasure. The alumni will have their own section of the stands between the juniors and the seniors (who have smaller classes than freshman and sophomores). Encina will need 3 or so alumni for judging the classes. Let me know if you would like to be a judge so I can see whether we have too many or not enough. We have three volunteers so far. Steve and I were thinking about having lunch at Applebee's near Encina after the rally. This is the Applebee's which has the Encina memorabilia on display. Let me know if you want to join us so we can make a reservation. The students would like us to dress in clothes from the era we attended Encina if possible. Date: Friday, October 20, 2000 Time: 1100 to 1130am Place: Encina HS gym Here are the RSVPs for the homecoming rally: Teachers - John Knurr Orlin Schuler Stafford Boyd 88 Alumni - Bonnie McFarland Kaplan 63 (Applebee's) Kathy Cooper Luken 66 James Barbeau 70 Nancy Cooper Manly 71 Randy Owens 71 (judge) Gail Haynes Veri 73 Harlan Lau 73 (Applebee's) Rett Smart 73 Mike Berry 74 Sande Byerley Jaeke 74 Julie Eissinger Meador 74 Terri Jurich Howard 74 Steve Palmer 74 (Applebee's) Jan Heintz Hammon 75 Scott Palmer 75 Susanne Pierson Currie 75 Marla Byerley 76 Karen Dellinger Nissen 76 Laura Vasquez Lavallee 77 Kim Tierney 78 Kathleen O'Neill Cabe 79 Janet Russel Mason 79 John McManus 81 Jolanne Tierney 81 Janna Snedden Curtis 83 Jeff Howser 86 Marci Sanschagrin Howser 86 Jinne Horger Webb 90 Angela Kern Mueller 90 Doralynn Co 94 (judge) Linh Smith 94 (judge) Last year the alumni were invited to attend the homecoming rally Friday morning before the game. I attended the rally with Steve Palmer 74, Kathleen Ketcherside 73, John Nunez 74 and Delfino Baeuerlen 96. You can see the pictures here: http://www.encinahighschool.com/homecoming/homecoming99/rally.htm of the school, the rally, the classes, students working on floats, the art gallery and even the senior lawn. We were invited to judge the rally and decide the winning class by Stafford Boyd 88, an Encina teacher, alumni and the activities directory last year. If you are able to attend the rally, I think it would be a great opportunity for alumni visit the campus. The gym was modernized last year and looked great! The students were loud and spirited and the gym was rocking. In the future I hope we are able to hold the homecoming party at Encina. But for now, this is an outstanding opportunity for alumni to visit the campus and see for themselves what Encina and it's students are like today. Please let me know if you plan to attend the homecoming rally. If you attend you need to check in at the front office and I need to provide Encina with the names of the alumni who will be attending the rally. HOMECOMING PREPARTY *** NEW *** Encina staff John Knurr, Orlin Schuler and Ginny Privateer will be at the Rock. Ginny invites other Encina staff and alumni to join them at the Candlerock before the pregame party at El Camino. "The Class of '73 is having a pre party Friday, October 20th from 4pm to 6pm at the Candlerock Lounge next to country club lanes! Anyone from the classes of 70,71,72,and 73 are strongly encouraged to attend. (smaller venue with drinks and food before facing the masses at El Camino). Please, no name tags or food.....we will survive on what we find at the Rock. Call me if you have questions @ (916) 362-5592 Rett Smart '73" For those of you who don't remember, Rett Smart organized the original homecoming party back in 98. HOMECOMING PARTY *** NEW *** I talked with student activities advisor Becky Hurley this week. The students will be making burgers at the concession stand inside the stadium and selling them for about $4. The students are not allowed in the cafeteria, so they will have adults shuttling the burgers over to the cafeteria. We'll have condiments for the burgers in the cafeteria. So if you don't have food plans, please support the students and buy burgers at the pregame party. You can also support them by buying burgers at the stadium during the homecoming game. Jolanne Tierney 81 has volunteered to DJ for the homecoming party! If you have any song requests, please send them to Jolanne at jamminjo@email.msn.com . Maybe Jolanne could play the theme song for the homecoming dance for each class year? Thanks Jolanne! It will be nice to have some appropriate music from the past. Steve Palmer 74 and Randy Palmer 71 have finagled a box of 500 green and pink lightsticks from Omniglow (some of you may remember Steve and Randy do research in things that glow). The lightsticks are 3 inches long, a bit shorter than those which they brought to last year's game and were such a big hit. This year, we will be letting the students sell them to raise money for Encina. So save a couple dollars to buy a few lightsticks at the game! Especially those of you with kids. This section has been getting longer and longer. I've moved most of the relevant information to the homecoming 2000 page. Date: Friday, October 20, 2000 Event: Preparty Time: 4pm to 6pm Place: Candlerock Lounge (near Country Club Lanes) Event: Pregame party Time: 5pm to 730pm Place: El Camino HS cafeteria Event: Homecoming game/parade Time: 730pm to 930pm Place: El Camino HS stadium Event: Postgame party Time: 930pm to midnight Place: El Camino HS cafeteria WARNING: No ALCOHOL or SMOKING is permitted on campus! I think the the El Camino cafeteria will be a very good location for the homecoming party as you can easily walk back and forth between the homecoming party and the homecoming game in the stadium. In addition, the cafeteria can accomodate up to 700 people (standing) so we should have plenty of room for alumni, staff and their families. Food: Bring your own food (like a picnic or tailgate), along with a sixpack of NONALCOHOLIC drinks and bag of chips to share. Or buy burgers from the students or at the game and support Encina. Drinks/Snacks: We will have ice chests, ice, snack bowls along with a few drinks and snacks to get started, but not enough for everyone. Please bring a sixpack of drinks and a bag of chips or the like to share. Classes: We will have class year posters in 5 year increments (1961-65 ... 1995-2000) around the perimeter of the cafeteria. There will be space to print your name and class year on the poster so folks can see who is at the party. This also provides a unofficial record of attendance of sorts. Family: Spouses and significant others are welcome. Those of you who are taking your family to the homecoming game are welcome to bring your children to the pregame party but we are not planning any entertainment for children and you should bring something to entertain them. This is first and foremost an alumni event and I neither encourage or discourage children. I felt holding the pregame party at the Candlestick last year discouraged those with children so El Camino is sort of a neutral location. Security: We will have off duty sheriffs patrolling the event and locking up. No alcohol please. We need to be on our best behaviour if we are to use school facilities for future homecoming parties. HOMECOMING PARADE We will have four alumni cars in the homecoming parade plus a jeep to pull the float. The drivers in parade for alumni: Eleanor Brown: Red 87 Porsche Targa Cynthia Connell 73: Light green 68 Mustang convertible Chris Wicks 67: Light green 68 Mustang convertible Linda Weatherford Ballance 62: Dark Green 96 Chryler Sebring Greg Grant 75 (pulling float): Open Jeep The teachers and staff are inviting to ride in the alumni cars in the homecoming parade. The students need NINE convertibles for the homecoming parade. There was a student working at a car dealer who was going to provide cars but he no longer works there. If you would be willing to drive your convertible in the parade please let me know! I know we have a lot of convertibles out there. I've only lined up two cars so far. If we get at least five we'll probably be okay as the cars can make more than one pass around the track. Drivers in parade for students: Lorna Cline Gragg 72/73 Heide Mathews Boullt 78 Last year Heide also drove in the parade. Her father Tom Mathews 61 called her on his cell phone from the game and told her the students needed help. HOMECOMING FLOAT Paul Stewart 76 wrote that they have plenty of 70s costumes but need an Apache costume! Do we have any mascots out there who still have an Apache costume we can borrow? Paul is already painting panels to be added to the trailer. They will be working on the float this weekend. Please contact Paul if you wish to help work on the float. Paul has too many volunteers wanting to ride on the float. Folks who work on the float will have a better chance of riding on the float . Contact Paul Stewart at pstewart@internow.com if you have costumes or would like to participate in the float in the homecoming parade. Principal Myrtle Berry wrote that the theme of the student floats is "Thru the Ages" and the classes will be as follows: 9th - 60's 10th- 80's 11th- 70's 12th- Renassiance So our 70s theme alumni float will fit right in! Myrtle also wrote: "If anyone has garb/music from any of the above areas, student government would appreciate borrowing it." HOMECOMING RSVPS We have about 359 RSVPs from Encina alumni and staff, not counting guests or family! Note that all current Encina teachers and staff are invited to the homecoming party! Unfortunately, we can not accomodate current students due to our agreement with the administrators. I am contacting the teachers and staff to confirm the still plan to attend the homecoming party. I've marked those who have confirmed so far. We've had some inevitable fallout so check to see the teachers you wanted to see are still able to come. Cornelia Whitaker wrote that she will be able to attend after all: "Hi Harlan. I am sure you read about the Greek ship that on Oct.1 sank in the Aegean Sea. Zeus III was its name and it was to sail me around the Cyclades Islands so I could learn about Peloponeses art, archeology and history. Now there will be a gap in my knowledge of the world. Do I still qualify for attendance at the reunion? Please get my name tag ready. I know that you must have incurred some big time expenses getting all this reunion stuff together. I would like to contribute but how. If I could read your handwriting on the flyer you sent I could send a check to your home. I know you are not a doctor you just write like one." Interestingly enough, Bette Sanford had a similar opinion of my handwriting back in fourth grade at Greer, where she gave me a C in handwriting. Boy, she was tough. Joetta Nevis Conners 72, my old next door neighbor from Gannon Drive, would like to attend but isn't able to drive at night. Joetta lives in East Sacramento near CSUS. If you could possibly give Joetta a ride back and forth to the party she would appreciate it very much. You can reach Joetta at 916-455-0620 or richjoec@pacbell.net . Thanks! Carolyn Teel Rand 73 wrote: "Thanks again for all the hard work you have put into this effort. See you on the 20th. It is my husband's birthday but I told him I was taking him to a game for his birthday dinner (nice wife, don't you think?)..." I talked with Don Golden and he won't be able to make it this year. He forgot the date and scheduled a hunting trip and is sorry he'll miss seeing everyone. I talked with Joe Patitucci's wife and Joe probably won't make it because he is recovering from a serious operation and isn't ambulatory yet. Joe is very sorry as both he and his wife were looking forward to attending. Jack Dutton's daughter Lynne wrote: "Hi Harlan, Dad definitely plans on coming to the Homecoming Events. Thanks for checking!" Jack's wife is an invalid and it took some convincing by his daughters to convince Jack it was okay for him to attend. Jennifer Kimmel 86 will be coming from San Diego, CA. Sally Enos 73 will be coming from Watsonville, CA. Sheila Ennes 93 will be coming from Chico, CA. Robert Dieterle 79 will be coming from San Ramon, CA. Rees Lee wrote that he will not be able to attend this year. I spoke with Elise Wolz and she is not sure if she'll come after all. She has macular degeneration and would need a ride. I told her we could provide a ride but she wasn't sure. She told me a story about how she used to work on the floats with the students and how much fun it was. But she thought it was a bad idea to have the party the same day as the homecoming game as she didn't think there would be enough time to visit. If some of her old students would like to call her and ask her to come I'm sure that would help her decide. You can reach Elise at 916-482-7370. I spoke with Bob Trathen and he and his wife will be out of town babysitting for their son or daughter's anniversary cruise. Bob is sorry he won't be able to make it this year. I spoke with John Sander and in addition to teaching at AR, he has a second job and has to work the evening of the party! John is sorry he'll miss seeing everyone. Stephanie Woo wrote that Bob Kirrene is in Ireland visiting relatives and isn't sure whether he'll be back in time. This explains why Bob didn't return my calls... John Knurr asked if anyone knows the whereabouts of Encina staff member Karen Brinkman, who he would like to invite to the party. We are receiving more checks for the reunion each day. We are also being contacted by alumni we previously couldn't reach, like Shannon Radford and Lisa De Leon. Thanks to the people who contacted them for us. We have already sent out our last mailing and out of more than 120 letters and postcards we've sent , only 2 have been returned for one reason or another. We were able to negotiate the menu we wanted thanks to all the people who sent their checks in prior to the original October 1st due date. We have extended the last date for checks to October 17th, but can't make any exceptions after that. The cost is $45.00 per person. Bellinger and Jinne Horger(Webb) BIOS KATHLEEN LUTZ 64 homepage: http://sites.netscape.net/katrinarae/ Occupation: I am a Christian music recording artist and evangelist....meaning I have albums out and I travel nationally and internationally giving concerts and/or directing retreats. Bio: After graduation, I attended Sacramento State. From 1967-1970 I was a flight attendant for Trans International Airlines which allowed me to travel all over the world. In 1970 I married John Daughenbaugh who was a Naval aviator and we began our family. In late 1979 I began singing professionally in the Monterey and San Francisco areas and in 1984 we moved to Nashville TN to secure a record contract in country music. Within months of arriving in Nashville I felt called to Gospel music. So in early 1985 I left my country music career behind and began a full time Christain music and evangelistic ministry. Three years ago my husband left his regular job as a geophysicist /environmental engineer and joined the ministry full time as my manager. I will release my fifth album, a Country Christian CD, on January 2, 2001. My stage name is Katrina Rae. Trivia: I recently was invited by the Pope to sing in Rome for the Jubilee Celebration of World Youth Day (August 2000) which was attended by 2 million teens and young adults from around the world. Definitely my largest audience ever! Friends: Margorie Seimears and Lesley Sadugor..I have lost track of both of them. Hobbies: Our family is our first interest and our faith community is our second interest. After that, John and I enjoy boating and we are fortunate to live on a beautiful lake in Tennessee. We both enjoy flying which we do in a small private plane whenever we can. Kids: We were blessed with five children: Jason who is 29 years old is married and lives in Apex NC. He is the purchasing manager for a large fiber optic company. Dana who is 28 years old was adopted when she was 8 years old. She lives in Modesto CA and is an accountant. She is single. Celeste who is 26 years old lives in Kansas City MO and is a food scientist for a major food ingredients company. She is single. Steven was adopted when he was 5 months old He would be 25 years old but died June 7, 1993 in a freak accident on the 4th fairway of the golf course. We all miss him tremendously. Candace who is 24 years old is still in college and majoring in Tourism and Hospitality. She is single and lives in Nashville. Grade_school: St. Ignatius Catholic School Grade_school_friends: The Park twins (Janice and Janine), Jane DiBuono, Grace Pfardresher, and Tony Egan. Memorable_teachers: Mr. Day..Latin: He expected the best from his students and was always supportive and encouraging. Mr. Carey..Music: Even though I was never in choir or music, he took time to teach me the correct breathing method that has helped me be the singer that I became. Mrs. Saladen..English: She had no patience for shyness. Her "speaking out, project your voice" forced me to overcome fright in public speaking. That has helped me immensely on stage. Actually, I have fond memories of all my teachers. I look back on all the ones I had and I feel they really cared and encouraged their students. Favorite_memory: There are just too many fond memories to find one favorite. I entered as a shy frosh and left as a confident young woman. High School was a great experience for me and I always felt proud to be an Encinian. PETER BOAM 63 Occupation: Marketing Services Training Manager for Discover Card (Utah) Bio: Graduated from Sac. Friends: David Helmich, Richard Hacken. Leo Lutchansky. I recently was re-connected with them thanks to the Internet. Hobbies: I love tennis, movies, and mystery novels. I especially enjoy going to bookstores with coffee shops so I can browse and enjoy a latte. Kids: None, darn it. Memorable_teachers: Mr. Lee, Sociology. He was fun and intelligent. Miss Kornmayer, Mathmatics. She was young and pretty and all guys loved her. Don McCormack and Jerry Kundert, football coaches. They were decent, caring men who encouraged me to keep trying. Favorite_memory: I actually started one football game my Senior year, against Luther Burbank! Also, the 1961 loss to El Camino for the league championship was unforgetable. Even though I spent the game on the bench, being there in front of an overflow crowd was incredible. Story: I remember one evening after football practice, a bunch of us picked up a coach's VW bug and put it inside the gym lobby! Alumni_in_contact: Dave Helmich, Leo Lutchansky, Dick Hacken 1963 Heard_about_website_from: Dave Helmich 1963 ANN SCHIRLE 68 Occupation: Chiropractic Physician Bio: So much has happened in the last 30+ years. My husband, Steve and daughter, Adrianna and I have pursued a life anchored in education, living in many parts of the country where Steve taught and did research at the university level. We ended up in Philadelphia where I pursued graduate studies at the Tyler School of Art of Temple University and Steve completed his psychology clinical internship. We lived in the "Green Country Town" of Bryn Mawr, PA where I taught fine arts and eventually theater arts at the Shipley School, a very fine prep school. I was in a head on collision in '85 which pretty much sidelined my life--6 months of excruciating pain going to hospital based PT 5 days a week. Out of desperation, I went to a friend's Chiropractor and had a 50% reduction in pain after the first treatment. A year and a half later I began pre-med studies at West Chester University, studying calculus, chemistry, physics, anatomy and physiology, etc., as prereq's for pursuing Chiropractic studies. Yes, I can imagine it may be hard for some of you to believe, but I completed all the necessary classes at the top of my class. After completing my studies, we picked up and left behind a very fine life, heading with my family to Portland, OR to attend Western States Chiropractic College for a 4-year course of study. I have my own clinic--Alameda Family Chiropractic--a successful practice and much joy restoring health and balance to the lives of my patients. My husband continues his work as a senior psychologist working with adolescents. He continues to be the love of my life after all these many years and is one of my greatest friends and supporters. My daughter had her 31st birthday this August and is not only beautiful, but smart and accomplished. She's taking some time after working with at-risk adolescent girls to figure out what her next step will be. We are all healthy and enjoying our lives together. Last summer we moved to Lake Oswego, the jewel of Oregon, where we live 1/2 hour from the city, but! have the blessing of living near the Tualatin River with all it's diverse wild life. We go to sleep serenaded by tree frogs and wake to the morning trills of song birds. A resident coyote family keeps us on our toes and we are right smack in the flight plane of migrating Canadian geese. All is well in our world, thank God. Trivia: Rumor has it that I ran off with a university professor after highschool. Not too far from the truth--he was a graduate student and went on to teach at several universities in the US. Back in the days of the war in Vietnam, I spent some time at Travis Air Force Base entertaining the troups with my songs and acoustic guitar. Haven't done any performance work for years. Still like to sing in the shower... Friends: We were the gruesome threesome--Nicki James and Gail Carstenson. Also Sheryl West and Susan Sevall. I am sure there are others--the mind is not as sharp as it used to be... Barbara Gundy was another... Hobbies: I like fishing for BIG fish. My garden is my sanity. Still doing artwork, but not professionally any longer. Kids: We have one daugher, Adrianna, who is 31 and absolutely delightful. A college graduate with a split degree in sociology and womens studies, she is living in Lake Oswego while she figures out what her next step will be. Grade_school: St. Ignatius School Grade_school_friends: Most of them went to El Camino Junior_high: Jonas Salk Memorable_teachers: Joe Patitucci for nurturing my love of the arts as well as my spirit. Joe Lawrence for encouraging my expression through writing, song and music and, in doing so, giving me a reason for my existence at that point in my life. Favorite_memory: The day all of the female students showed up wearing pants/slacks, some even brave enough to show up bra-less. We were all supposed to dress in skirts and dresses. I think Alan Dreifus (SP?) got some civil liberty-types involved in the scuffle. My, but we thought we were so cutting edge back then. How the world has changed... Story: I must not pass up the opportunity to remember Miss Carstenson, our high school guidance counselor, who met with me one day and advised me to take typing and shorthand classes, since I was clearly not "College Material". Never tell Ann that she can't do something. I hope the rest of you who might have heard the same thing went on to do wonderful things with your life, whether it involved university studies or other routes to greatness. EVELYN KOSSNER 69 Occupation: Retired/ now homemaker Bio: For any of you who might remember me, I was the girl with the wet hair and blood-shot chlorinated eyes from all my hundreds of hours looking at the bottom of the swimming pool, while a member of the Arden Hills swim team. After competing in the Los Angeles Olympic Trials in swimming in 1968 (and not making the team), I went on to compete in the World Student Games, held in Torino, Italy in 1969, and I won a gold medal in the 400M freestyle for the U.S. After that, I earned my Secondary Teaching credential at Sac State and substituted in the San Juan and Elk Grove school districts for about four years. I married and then divorced during that time. Finding that teaching was not exactly a promising career for me, I struck out in finding something different. After a number of part time jobs, I wound up with a job at Sutter General Hospital (the old building) in the admissions department and worked my way up to manager of Business Services (with an interim period of Director of Business Services in 1998). OK,everyone. I have to say, I married a "computer nerd" in 1982. We have no children and live in Granite Bay, close to Folsom Lake. Life is wonderful. I retired last January after 20 years of service with that organization and now am really enjoying life. Hey, guys, I'm RETIRED! How, many of you can say that? Hobbies: I love jogging and biking around Folsom Lake. My husband and I have an extensive collection of fine red wines, that we have gathered over the years. We have two wine cellars. Between the two, we can store over 2,000 bottles of wine! Now, that's alot of wine.... the fun part is drinking it! Kids: We love not having any. Grade_school_friends: Carol Brereton Junior_high: Carol Brereton Junior_high_friends: Carol Brereton Memorable_teachers: John Figenshu: He was considered a "hard" teacher, but brought out the best in only the best of the students. It was a pleasure being in his class. He gained our respect and we worked hard for our grades in his class of physiology. He was one of the reasons I went in to teaching. He showed compassion for his subject and passed it on to his students. He took the time to consol me when my mother died. He will remain in my memory forever. Elise Wolz: She was the greatest German teacher anyone could have. She loved her students so much and it was quite evident. I remember her bringing special Kleenex's (extra large) to class for Mr. Jenkins, because whenever he would sneeze, the volume would blow the classroom away! She made German fun and everyone loved her. It was somewhat of a pain to get working, not what I would call a consumer product. Basically, there's a WavePOINT-II ethernet bridge which attaches to your network and broadcasts on 2.4Ghz. You plug a WaveLAN PC card into your laptop and it appears to be part of the network. So now I can take our laptop anywhere within 100 feet or so of the base and surf the net or check email or transfer files between systems. They also have wireless ISA and PCI cards so you can network desktop systems as well. No need to run ethernet cable. I considered a phoneline ethernet network but I wanted a true wireless system. Very cool but not quite ready for primetime, with 270 page manual and assembly required. Bleeding edge technology as they say. WHAT'S NEW I went through the new classmates.com listings for the 80s and 90s this week and found a lot of new alumni. Please look carefully for old classmates. I only send out announcements to the class mailing lists for people who send in contact forms, which does not include these new folks from classmates.com. 10/9/00: Anne Yallalee 63, Timothy Wheelis
