Sent: Friday, September 15, 2000 2:22 PM Subject: [Encina Update] Encina Update (fundraiser/homecoming/float/nametags/rally/rsvps/alumni association/walk/siblings/classes/trailer/deaths/whats new) ENCINA ALUMNI, This week's update is sponsored by Lou DeCosta 66. I'm trying to get the update back on schedule so here's the second one this week. FUNDRAISER I received this email from Coach Durkee on Wednesday: "Harlan- We have had two orders for hats and one very generous donation. I would like to extend the date for hat orders until the 25th of September. Due to the talent on our squad this year (and beating Mira Loma 44-7), many athletes who have never played football are trying out. Also, I have had the opportunity to recruit many freshman from my geography courses for the JV team. Thus, we have had to spend additional money on equipment and helmets to meet our needs. I would like to give the fundraiser additional time to try and sell more hats. The rallies begin at 11 am at Encina and end at 11:30. I look forward to seeing you there. The party sounds great and the players are VERY EXCITED to have so many alumni coming to the game. It will be by far the largest crowd any of these boys will have ever played in front of in football. Thank you! Coach Durkee" I have to admit, I was embarassed to hear that Coach Durkee had only received TWO orders for hats as of Wednesday! With over 250 alumni and staff plus their families RSVPed for the homecoming party and homecoming game, I hope that more of you will dip into your pocket and order an Encina alumni hat to wear at the game! My hope is that you were all procastinating and Coach Durkee received a lot of checks this week... Here are the particulars should you wish to order: "Dear Alumni- We would like to inform you of our 2000 football fundraiser. I have made arrangements with a sporting goods vendor to order the necessary hats. They will be white with a cardinal bill and eyelet's, with Encina Alumni in gold block letters, surrounding a football. The hats will be adjustable, so one size will fit all. The price of the hats will be $20, with $10 paying for the hat and $10 going to the football program. Any additional donations would be highly appreciated, and if you do not desire a hat, any donation would be welcome. We have many costs during the season which include safety checks of all equipment, doctors at games, bus rides to away games, new equipment, ect. Unfortunately in many cases, the parents of our players and students are not in a financial position to donate funds. As in many years past, Coach Hibbard has generously spent countless dollars of his own money on many of the things our program has needed. I would like to stress how much the coaching staff at Encina would appreciate any hat orders or donations to our program. Thank You! Now for the facts- please mail your checks to Encina High School, c/o Varsity Football, 1400 Bell St., Sacramento, CA 95825. I will place the order on the 15th of September for as many hats as are needed. When they arrive I will put a note on the website. You may get the hats in three ways; 1) pick it up from Encina yourself, 2) send a self-addressed envelope with postage and we will mail it to you when the hats arrive, or 3) they will be available to alumni at the party before the homecoming game. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to call 971-7557 and ask for Coach Durkee or Coach Hibbard. Once again, thank you for your support of the Encina Football Program. Coach Durkee" HOMECOMING PARTY Date: Friday, October 20, 2000 Event: Pregame party Time: 5pm to 730pm Place: El Camino HS cafeteria Event: Homecoming game/parade Time: 730pm to 10pm? Place: El Camino HS stadium Event: Postgame party Time: 10pm to midnight Place: El Camino HS cafeteria I think the the El Camino cafeteria will be a very good location for the homecoming party as you can easily walk back and forth between the homecoming party and the homecoming game in the stadium. In addition, the cafeteria can accomodate up to 700 people (standing) so we should have plenty of room for alumni, staff and their families. Food: Bring your own food (like a picnic or tailgate), along with a sixpack of NONALCOHOLIC drinks and bag of chips to share. Or wait and buy food at the snack bar at the game. Drinks/Snacks: We will have ice chests, ice, snack bowls along with a few drinks and snacks to get started, but not enough for everyone. Please bring a sixpack of drinks and a bag of chips or the like to share. Remember, this is a free event and the only supplies we have are those DONATED by the folks on the reunion committee. Tables: We will have tables set up in about 1/3 of the cafeteria for those who bring food to eat before the game. The rest of the space will be open to encourage mixing/visiting. For those who don't want to bring food, I encourage you to maximize visiting time by buying something at the snackbar at the game for dinner. Family: Spouses and significant others are welcome. Those of you who are taking your family to the homecoming game are welcome to bring your children to the pregame party but we are not planning any entertainment for children and you should bring something to entertain them. This is first and foremost an alumni event and I neither encourage or discourage children. I felt holding the pregame party at the Candlestick last year discouraged those with children so El Camino is sort of a neutral location. Clothing: Encina clothing is encouraged. Wear your old letter jackets, sweaters, PE shirts or gym shorts (Lucia Churches 73 did this last year). If you can fit into your cheerleader or songleader or mascot costumes even better! Amy Francis 88 wore her songleader costume last year at the game. Security: We will have public safety officers patrolling the event and locking up. No alcohol please. I am still waiting for quotes on liability insurance for the homecoming party but it appears it will cost about $500. When the costs for security and custodian are added, the cost of the homecoming party will be about $1000. I also asked if alumni would be willing to donate funds to cover the homecoming costs so that we could avoid charging admission. I would like to keep the event free if possible, especially for the teachers and staff. In the past week I have received additional donations from Encina alumni from Heather Kendall 73, Paul Bonderson 70 and Debi Connell Wurdack 71. Many thanks for your support! HOMECOMING FLOAT Paul Stewart 76 and a few other Encina alumni would like to put together a float for this year's homecoming parade. In order to implement their idea, they need to borrow a flat bed which is available the weekend before the homecoming party (October 13th). Paul said he talked with an alumni at last year's party who had a flat bed but couldn't remember his name. If you can help with the flat bed or would just like to help Paul work on the float, let me know. NAMETAGS As an additional incentive to RSVP, those who RSVP will receive nice pre-printed souvenir nametags at the cafeteria, showing that they attended the Homecoming 2000 party. I will use big letters this year, since many of you complained about the small print last year and having to stare indiscreetly at people's chests. Those who don't RSVP will have to make their own nametags... HOMECOMING RALLY Date: Friday, October 20, 2000 Time: 1100 to 1130am Place: Encina HS gym Here are the RSVPs so far: Rett Smart 73 Sande Byerley Jaeke 74 Steve Palmer 74 Terri Jurich Howard 74 Marla Byerley 76 Kathy Cooper Luken 66 Janna Snedden Curtis 83 Angela Kern Mueller 90 Last year the alumni were invited to attend the homecoming rally Friday morning before the game. I attended the rally with Steve Palmer 74, Kathleen Ketcherside 73, John Nunez 74 and Delfino Baeuerlen 96. You can see the pictures here: http://www.encinahighschool.com/homecoming/homecoming99/rally.htm of the school, the rally, the classes, students working on floats, the art gallery and even the senior lawn. We were invited to judge the rally and decide the winning class by Stafford Boyd 88, an Encina teacher, alumni and the activities directory last year. If you are able to attend the rally, I think it would be a great opportunity for alumni visit the campus. The gym was modernized last year and looked great! The students were loud and spirited and the gym was rocking. In the future I hope we are able to hold the homecoming party at Encina. But for now, this is an outstanding opportunity for alumni to visit the campus and see for themselves what Encina and it's students are like today. Please let me know if you plan to attend the homecoming rally. Last year it was about 1130am. If you attend you need to check in at the front office and I need to provide Encina with the names of the alumni who will be attending the rally. HOMECOMING RSVPS We have about 265 RSVPs from Encina alumni and staff, not counting guests or family! Note that all current Encina teachers and staff are invited to the homecoming party! The class of 70 with 12 rsvps has passed the class of 81 with 11 rsvps and is now in fourth place. Several classes have 9 or 10 rsvps. The class of 73 is way out in front just like last year . I think we could do a lot to help the kids. On the subject of a stadium, there has been some district investigation and I think they figured it would take about $250k for a decent one. There is some interest and we should talk with district and site people about it. There are probably additional less expensive efforts we could make that would have a positive impact. I am interested in getting together (online or in person) to discuss this. I live in the Sacto area and consult to San Juan USD on technology issues so I'm around the schools often. I was thinking that if we could pull together a core team to get things started, we could pass out a flyer (or something) at the pregame to spread the word. Before that happens, we'll need a vision and outline of a plan (the reason for a meeting or online). Please feel free to email or call with your thoughts. Please contact Steve Palmer 74 at spalmer@innotek.com or 530-672-2366 if you are interesting in alumni association. AVON BREAST CANCER WALK Encina English teacher Eleanor Brown, retired as assistant superintendent of San Juan this past June. I was talking with her last week and she mentioned that she was participating in the Avon Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk from Santa Barbara to Malibu. Here is the letter Eleanor sent me: Greetings- After 36 years in education, I will be retiring from the San Juan Unified School District and looking to new adventures. One of the opportunities that will be more available to me is the chance to volunteer my efforts to situations that will help others. I wanted to do something physically challenging and worthwhile. I decided on the Avon Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk from Santa Barbara to Malibu, a 60 mile walk held on October 27-29, 2000, and I will be walking with 2000 other people to raise money for breast cancer and other diseases which affect women. As I became involved in the training and support, I realized what an impact this could have. Avon Products Foundation, Inc, is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization operating exclusively for charitable and educational purposes. The Foundation grants to non-profit breast health programs and cutting-edge medical research on breast cancer. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death for all women, and the leading cause of death in women between the ages of 40 and 55. Currently, one million women in the United States have the disease and don't know it. They probably won't know about their potential fatal illness for another five to eight years. That's why I am walking so far - to do something big - something that would challenge me as much as breast cancer challenges millions of women in the United States. Each participant has agreed to raise $1800 in pledges before September 22nd. Would you join me in this effort and consider making a fully tax-deductible pledge to help me meet my goal? I have enclosed a pledge form. Please look it over and if interested, designate the amount that's right for you. You may either return the form to Avon or to me. The pledges are for a dollar amount, not a per mile basis. And please feel free to copy the form and share it with any friend you feel might be interested. I chose to spend some of my retirement walking for the cure. Can you imagine what a gift it would be to give other women the chance to look forward to retirement, too? Thanks very much for your support. Eleanor Brown If you are interested in supporting Eleanor, please write and I will fax or email you the pledge form. Don't delay, the deadline is September 22nd, next Friday. SIBLINGS Ken Lambert 70 wrote: Chip Lambert 62 Bonnie Lambert 63 Ken Lambert 70 Joe Lambert 72 Jane Bassett 79 is Jack Bassett's daughter. Don't you want to have a reunion next year??? The class of 91 needs a chairperson for the reunion committee for next years 10 year reunion. Beki Keeler has been acting as informal reunion contact for the class of 91. However, Beki wrote: "I have made a few contacts, but due to the fact that I only attended Encina my junior and senior year, I do not know a lot of people and I only lived in Sac for a total of 3 years. I currently live in Washington state and I am finding it difficult to make the conections that I need to proceed with the class of 1991 10 year reunion. If there is anyone in Sacramento area that would be willing to head this thing up that would be great. I would love to help in whatever way possible, but because of the distance I feel that I would not be able to do this thing justice." Please write if you would be interesting in chairing the reunion committee or are just interesting in helping plan the reunion. FLATBED TRAILER Debbie Richmond Meyer 73 wrote: My daughter, Lauren, is on the leadership team for Oakridge High School in El Dorado Hills. Her soph class is looking for a flat bed trailer for the homecoming float. They are having a hard time locating one and I thought that I might as well send out a message. If anyone has one that they would like to donate to the "cause" please email me at debnrollin@aol.com. The homecoming parade is Oct.13th.
