Sent: Thursday, August 03, 2000 12:45 PM Subject: Encina Update (fundraiser/homecoming party/siblings/classes/rodger ogren/sacramento valley sunroofs/auburn honda/whats new/vacation) ENCINA ALUMNI, This week I received RSVPs for the Homecoming 2000 party from Encina staff members Lou Huber, Ginny Privateer Corsi, John Knurr, Orlin Schuler and James Smith. FUNDRAISER Coach Durkee wrote: I am in the process of discussing the fundraiser now with Coach Hibbard. My initial thoughts are to 1) have a set due date for alums to mail their checks to the athletic dept. (no sizes are necessary), 2) we order the hats for everyone (we usually order about 15-20) like normal, and then 3) they come to school to pick them up, pick them up at the game, or send the check with envelope, address, and postage and we'll mail the hats to alums when they arrive. I'll e-mail you again after I'm done discussing the issue with Coach Hibbard. Several alumni asked about the availability of other Bulldog clothing so I asked Coach Durkee about this and also invited both Coach Durkee and Coach Hibbard to the homecoming party. Coach Durkee wrote: Coach Hibbard and I discussed the fundraiser. We'll need a date by which all orders must be completed, and the exact date is open for discussion. We will also be ordering shirts for the staff, so it may be possible to order those also. Any other Encina items are sold by the school through the front office. As far as the party, I will bring it up to Coach Hibbard. We normally meet with the staff and watch film. I could come by the party later if invited. Thanks Tom Durkee HOMECOMING 2000 PARTY **** UPDATE **** Over the past week we have been discussing the arrangements for the homecoming party on the encinareunion mailing list. Various issues are up in the air, but one change in the format is that instead of a potluck, we will most likely turn the pregame party into a picnic. In other words, people should bring their own food and drinks and clean up after themselves before leaving for the game. We will probably provide a table full of softgoods like plates, napkins, utensils, along with ice chests full of ice to add to drinks. The potential attendance makes a potluck impractical for various reasons. For those who don't want to picnic, I suggest you buy your dinner at the snack bar at El Camino HS, where the proceeds will benefit Encina! All Encina alumni and staff and their families are invited to the Homecoming 2000 party. Date: Friday, October 20, 2000 Location: 707 Commons Dr, Sacramento, CA 95825 (corner of Commons and Campus Commons) Time: 5pm to 2am (game from 7-10pm at El Camino HS) The venue is an office building located in Campus Commons at the corner of Commons and Campus Commons Dr. Many thanks to Kathleen O'Neill Cabe 79 for offering to host the homecoming party. Her husband's law offices are located are the first floor. We will have access to a small indoor lobby area, bathrooms, a small kitchen and conference rooms where we could set up tables for the potluck. There is a large terrace in front of the building along with a large lawn area between the building and Commons Dr. In back of the building is a partly covered walkway which runs the length of the building and ends in a gazebo. A large parking lot is located behind the building. The entrance to the lot is from University Ave. There is also lots of street parking available on Commons Dr and Campus Commons Dr. The building is located in a beautiful wooded area of Campus Commons. There does not appear to be much street traffic so the lawn area is reasonably safe for children. The lobby is small so I would guess we'll spend the pregame party outside on the terrace, the lawn and in the back walkway. Hope for good weather as we'd probably have trouble squeezing more than 100 people indoors... I anticipate poor attendance for a night football game if the weather is bad in any case. Last year the homecoming game was just before Halloween and the weather was very pleasant. Keep your fingers crossed. As far as the post game party goes, we can stay late but the outside areas are not lighted plus it may get cold. If we have too many people we will have problems squeezing all of us indoors. It's about 10 minutes from Campus Commons to El Camino HS where the game will be played. There are pictures of the bulding here: Note that this party is free and being organized by volunteers. We're going to need lots of help to make this a successful party. There are about 40 folks on the homecoming party mailing list who have volunteered to help. If you wish to help or participate in the discussion on the mailing list let me know. HOMECOMING RSVPS We have about 228 RSVPs from Encina alumni and staff, not counting guests or family! I also contacted factulty member Orlin Schuler(Industrial Arts) and he will be there too. Also almost sure that Ginny Privateer will attend also. Wow, Ginny lives in Boulder, CO and John Knurr will be coming all the way from Wisconsin! Cornelia Whitaker gave me the email address of James Smith, former Encina principal. James wrote: Thanks very much for the information and invitation. I will be there if it is possible. I'll let you know by the 11th. Congratulations on the fine web site and thanks for all the work you are putting in keeping it up-to-date. I'm sure the staff and graduates from the years I was at Encina are very pleased with the opportunity to read about their friends and share their own bios on the site and perhaps using your list of eM and postal addresses renew old friendships. I know I look forward to visiting with friends whose names I noted as intending to attend. Some I haven't seen in years. Thanks again, Jim James W. RODGER OGREN 65 Occupation: marine biologist Bio: I was a Russian interpreter in the Navy and got out in 1969. I became a professional student in Monterey for 4 years, transferred to CSUS and then Moss Landing Marine Lab back in Monterey Bay. I studied subtidal algae and showed everyone Craig Hunter's cheerleading picture; I think he is still working there. I dropped out of gradschool in 1980 to manage an oyster farm in Marin County for a couple years, then bought a oneway ticket to Hawaii and wound up on the equator monitoring the 1982-83 El Nino. Then while travelling up and down the westcoast selling dive charters, I became reacquainted with a lady I'd first met in Monterey. She was living in Seattle and was willing to store my surfboards behind her couch. After working for environmental consulting firms, I got a job at The Seattle Aquarium and have been here for 12 years. I am mainly the salmon biologist, but also take care of the many saltwater fish, algae and an octopus or two. We've got a cool 400,000 gallon tank with steelhead, chinook and coho salmon. Trivia: I spent 2 years working on Polish, Russian, Japanese and Korean fishing boats in the Bering Sea. It was great food, high adventure and kept me at sea. I also cooked on a research boat doing anti-submarine stuff out of Santa Barbara, a tugboat hauling fuel barges to Alaska and the Aleution Islands and a cool sailboat out of Oahu. Friends: Barbara McKee, Tom Egger, both Kerns, the swim team, Portia Burke, Dwight Heron, Tom Peters, Mike Hagen, Ken Gott, Janine Cerles, Nate Kotrlik and many more. Hobbies: Scuba, surfing, fishing and building tree houses. Kids: Finally married at 40, we have two boys. The first will be eleven in September and going into the 5th grade. The youngest was born on Saint Patrick's Day and is 8. They do karate, swim team, cub scouts and tree houses. Grade_school: Thomas Edison Grade_school_friends: Jim Thomas Junior_high: Jonas Salk Junior_high_friends: Lewis Reedy Memorable_teachers: John Psiahas because he made French exciting, Rees Lee & John Tracey because they made us question the Beatles, Jack Ogden because he played Bob Dylan and Coach Gallaway because he shot me with a starter's pistol. I slowed down so Paul Owens could catch up in a 100 IM; both of us swam many laps after that meet. Favorite_memory: Bill Kern and I in Dave Harshbarger's green Corvair. We cut class and broke into the Sacramento underground beneath the old Bruener's store. Story: Tom Egger and I saw Eric Clapton, the Beau Brummels and the Lovin' Spoonful in the Memorial Auditorium in 1965; that's also where the Rolling Stones got a shocking reception. Ed Valko and I joined the Navy a week before Bill Kern and Dave Harshbarger. SACRAMENTO VALLEY SUNROOFS This is just a little plug for a local Sacramento business whom I had a good experience with this week. I recently purchased a Honda Odyssey minivan from Auburn Honda. I had them install an ASC video system for my kids and the installation was performed by Sacramento Valley Sunroofs. I had an ASC MVS2 video system installed, which consisted of a display on the back of each front seat headrest and a VCR/TV under one of the middle seats. The audio is broadcast on three different FM frequencies, allowing you to listen to the audio on either your FM radio or the two wireless headphones. Other systems use either wired headphones or infrared headphones, each of which have their pros and cons. The system worked fine until I got home to the Bay Area, where all three FM frequencies are already used by radio stations. The stations are strong enough so that it is not possible to hear the audio broadcast by the VCR/TV unit. I talked with Bill Rich at Sacramento Valley Sunroofs, who have installed about 80 of these ASC video systems since they became available last October. In Sacramento, two of the three frequencies are unused so I was the first customer to report this problem. Bill talked with ASC and told me they had a fix for my problem. The fix involved running a wire from the FM antenna of the VCR/TV unit to the FM antenna of my radio in the dash. This past Tuesday I drove out to Sacramento from Mountain View. Bill Rich had their most experienced installer Gale Hill perform the installation in about an hour. When I asked how much it would be, Bill graciously waived the charge. He said I was the first customer of theirs to have this problem and since I was dissatisfied with the video system, he just wanted to make sure it worked right and asked me to report back after I returned to the Bay Area. Me being their guinea pig for the fix. It was difficult to verify the fix worked in Sacramento but I tested when I got home to the Bay Area and it works fine now. Needless to say, my kids are much happier with the video system now that the audio works! I recommended to Bill that they make the addition of the antenna wire a part of their normal installation for the ASC video system in the future. Although customers who live in the Sacramento area don't have a problem there, they are likely to experience the same problem when travelling through urban areas like the Bay Area or Los Angeles. Bill thought this was a good idea and was anxious to know how well the fix worked in the Bay Area. As I said, it works fine now. The direct antenna connection allows the TV/VCR unit to override the FM station on the same frequency. I would like to recommend Bill Rich and Sacramento Valley Sunroofs to any of you who are considering having a sunroof or video system installed. ASC is probably the largest sunroof manufacturer in the world and does most the the sunroofs for Hondas, many GM models, etc. It's refreshing to deal with a small business like theirs where they take pride in their work. AUBURN HONDA While I'm on the subject, I would also like to put in a plug for Auburn Honda. We first purchased a Honda Accord from Auburn Honda back in 1991. While trying to purchase a Honda Odyssey, first on the internet, and then in the Bay Area, I found the waiting list was 7-8 months and the dealers were charging $2-3k over MSRP. Steve Palmer 74 reminded me about Auburn Honda and I gave them a call. Although the Odysseys are in short supply, Auburn still sells them at MSRP and refuses to gouge their customers. They ordered the color I wanted and I picked up my new Odyssey a few weeks ago as promised. If you are in the market for a Honda, give Auburn Honda a call and talk with sales person Jeff Duncan at 800-576-7234. Tell him Harlan sent you...
