New highs were set all over the place. In Mountain View where I live, a new high of 108 was set Wednesday. This reminds me of Sacramento weather . This week I received RSVPs for the Homecoming 2000 party from Encina staff members Marilyn Carlson, Don Day, Terry Reed and JoAnne Smith. HOMECOMING PARTY Date: Friday, October 20, 2000 Location: 707 Commons Dr, Sacramento, CA 95825 (corner of Commons and Campus Commons) Time: 5pm to 2am (game from 7-10pm at El Camino HS) The venue is an office building located in Campus Commons at the corner of Commons and Campus Commons Dr. Many thanks to Kathleen O'Neill Cabe 79 for offering to host the homecoming party. Her husband's law offices are located are the first floor. We will have access to a small indoor lobby area, bathrooms, a small kitchen and conference rooms where we could set up tables for the potluck. There is a large terrace in front of the building along with a large lawn area between the building and Commons Dr. In back of the building is a partly covered walkway which runs the length of the building and ends in a gazebo. A large parking lot is located behind the building. The entrance to the lot is from University Ave. There is also lots of street parking available on Commons Dr and Campus Commons Dr. The building is located in a beautiful wooded area of Campus Commons. There does not appear to be much street traffic so the lawn area is reasonably safe for children. The lobby is small so I would guess we'll spend the pregame party outside on the terrace, the lawn and in the back walkway. Hope for good weather as we'd probably have trouble squeezing more than 100 people indoors... I anticipate poor attendance for a night football game if the weather is bad in any case. Last year the homecoming game was just before Halloween and the weather was very pleasant. Keep your fingers crossed. As far as the post game party goes, we can stay late but the outside areas are not lighted plus it may get cold. If we have too many people we will have problems squeezing all of us indoors. It's about 10 minutes from Campus Commons to El Camino HS where the game will be played. There are pictures of the bulding here: Note that this party is free and being organized by volunteers. We're going to need lots of help to make this a successful party. There are about 30 folks on the homecoming party mailing list who have volunteered to help. If you wish to help or participate in the discussion on the mailing list let me know. HOMECOMING RSVPS We have about 150 RSVPs from Encina alumni and staff, not counting guests or family! The class of 1973 has 18 RSVPs, edging out the class of 1985 with 10, and the class of 86 with 9. The classes of 75, 77, 78, and 90 have 6 rsvps a piece. All the classes are represented, except for 66, 92 and 95-99. This week I heard from Encina math teacher Marilyn Carlson Spartz, who taught math from 1962-1966 and also subbed during the 80s. Marilyn has been reading about the homecoming party and will try to attend. Marilyn has email. I also talked with Encina language teacher Don Day, who taught at Encina from 1958-1966. Don plans to attend the homecoming party. Don is good friends with Jack Dutton. Don has email. I also heard from Terry Reed, who plans to attend with JoAnne Smith. Terry was the Counseling Secretary from 1973 until October 1994. Terry is presently the Administrative Assistant for the Assistant Superintent of Curriculum & Instruction of Rocklin Unified School District. Terry has email. JoAnne Smith worked at Encina from before 1973 to the present. JoAnne is currently registrar at Encina and has been very helpful in tracking down lost alumni and staff. I saw JoAnne last year when I visited Encina for the homecoming rally. JoAnne has email. Encina teacher Sandy Hunt wrote that they have a trip to New York planned in October and she is not sure when they will be returning. Sandy will try and attend if they return in time. REMEMBERING Kathie Kloss Marynik 67 has been going through the social security death index and a new online index which covers California deaths between 1940-1997. These indices allow you to determine when and where a person died. If you check the 60s and 70s class directories, many of the deceased listings now have an accurate date of death. Kathie Kloss Marynik 67 wrote: "Some might think this is morbid, but I feel we should remember every classmate, whether they're here or not. The memorial sites where memories can be left will be especially comforting & interesting for children & grandchildren of the deceased to visit." Thanks for your research Kathie! If you would like to write a remembrance for a sibling or classmate, I would be glad to add your remembrance as a bio on the appropriate homepage. We already have a few of these remembrances scattered throughout the "living" bios. RICK VOGELSANG 81/PAUL VOGENSANG 84 Melissa Tovar 81 wrote: "I just wanted to let you all know something very exciting about one of our classmates. For those of you that live in the Sacramento area and who listen to the local radio station 100.5 the Zone, they have been playing a local group's song pretty regularly. Yesterday, the Zone had a big event at Discovery Park. This local band opened the show. The guitar player for this band is our own Rick Vogelsang. His group is called Zoppi. For those of you that like Alternative Rock, Zoppi is really awesome! After their set, they were signing autographs. I wanted to just double check to make sure it really was him. As I got closer I knew it was him. He recognized me as I got closer. I didn't get to really talk to him too much because there were quite a few people wanting autographs. Anyway, if you get a chance to hear them, I recommend it. The name of the song that has been playing on the radio is "One Sun." Zoppi has a website and a CD out. Way to go Rick!!" I tried www.zoppi.com and was linked to the MCA website which contained this blurb about Zoppi: 'Fronted by singer/songwriter Bob Zoppi, along with guitarist/co-writer Rick Vogelsang and bassist/co-writer Paul Vogelsang (they're brothers), Zoppi is the kind of band for which "everything unfolded naturally," as Bob puts it. The m.o. has always been first and foremost to write good songs. "If the songs are good, people will eventually hear them," he adds. That field-of-dreams mentality paid off on their debut album, on which Zoppi teamed with producer Matthew Wilder (No Doubt). A more fruitful collaboration would be hard to fathom. "Matt is such a musical guy," says Bob. "We were on the same page throughout." That spirit of harmony certainly comes across on Suspended, which kicks off with "Feel Love," a visceral tune with tight harmonies and a lead vocal that borrows from the rhythmic complexity of rap. The band chose to explore all musical avenues open to them, from the dry acoustic flavored wit of "Suspended" and the searing Beatle-esque "Ashamed," to the choral harmonies of "Distorted Views and "What You Get." If many of the songs seem to recount the highs and lows of struggling relationships, there's a good reason. "All my songs are derived from real-life situations," says Zoppi. "I cannot write fictional lyrics." That certainly applies to the premiere single, the moody, melodic "One Sun," which was written as an anguished look back on Bob's early struggles with his father.' The website (http://www.mcarecords.com/artists/artist.asp?artistid=140) has clips from their album you can listen to. CLAY WEST 80 Janet Russel 79 wrote that their was an article about Clay West 80 and his family in the Sacramento Bee's Family Album. "Family Album: The West-Greene family By Silvina Martinez Bee Staff Writer (Published June 11, 2000) The family: Clay West, 37, his wife Judy Greene, 37, and the children: Mackenize Grommet, 13, Trevor Grommet, 9, Tanner Grommet, 6, and Tayleigh Greene, 11 months old. They live in Fair Oaks. Background: Clay West and Judy Greene grew up in Sacramento and met when they were both beginning their teaching careers in North Highlands 12 years ago. The two of them work now at Oakdale Elementary School. He is a fifth-grade teacher, she teaches third grade. The three oldest children -- Mackenzie, Trevor and Tanner -- are Judy's from her previous marriage. She and Clay were married in Nevada City in December 1996. Their daughter Tayleigh, who uses her mother's maiden name, was born last year. She'll turn one this month. The boys adore their little sister, their mother says. "She's spoiled," she says. "If she cries, they all run to help her." Greene says that "having Tayleigh has made our family much closer. The boys take great delight in finding ways to make her laugh out loud. They are her greatest fans, and she adores her big brothers." Mackenzie is a seventh-grader and enjoys soccer and baseball. Trevor, who is in fourth grade, loves computer games, and first-grader Tanner likes baseball, Legos and Pokémon cards. "And all of us love to swim in our backyard pool," Greene says. Being organized: The parents are teachers, the kids are students, and they all have a lot going on after school. The schedule is hectic for the family at their Fair Oaks home. "You have to be organized," Greene says. She packs lunches every night and keeps a calendar with everyone's activities. The oldest and the youngest of the boys have baseball practice every week, but their mother and their father, Mike Grommet, who lives nearby, take turns to make sure they make it. Clay likes to garden and golf, and Judy likes to read historical novels in her spare time. "Family is sharing our life experiences, making happy memories and loving each other," Greene says. "We want to teach our children courtesy, responsibility and integrity. The most important thing we can give them is love, attention and respect." A tradition: The family has dinner together every night. And every year they take a camping trip together." If you know how to contact Clay West please write. DALENE WEYBRIGHT 75 Occupation: Alcohol and Drug Counselor Bio: After graduation I moved to San Jose to live and play with a Rock & Roll band for a few years. During that time I started working in a plating shop & became one of the Bay Areas top female platers. I married Reuben Ingraham, a fellow plater in Feb. of 78. We moved back to Sacramento and promptly gave birth to Reuben Guy in Nov of 78. I had my second son Timothy William Daniel seven years later. Reuben, my husband, was very violent and abusive, so I left him and became a single parent. I met my second husband, Michael McKay in 1992 and in early 93 we had a son, Marshall Ray, then Christine Dalene in late 94. Both of my children have multiples of freckles. Mike and I ran a lucrative Mom & Pop bicycle shop, specializing in custom low riders and restoring antique Schwinns. In Feb of 96 I became a friend of Bill W.(for those of you who don't know what that means, it's a good thing). Left husband #2 in 99 because he couldn't change his "habits". I'm asking because you've gotten the name incorrect both times you've written about Evelyn Fedler in connection with her antique business. Antique Plaza, at 85,000 square feet and with almost 300 dealers, is the largest antique mall in California, possibly even the largest west of the Mississippi. It is located at 11395 Folsom Blvd in Rancho Cordova, between Sunrise Blvd. and Hazel Ave., and is open daily 10AM - 6PM. June 9 - 18, 2000, is the biggest sale of the year, the Dealer Challenge Sale. Evelyn Fedler, former Encina Business teacher, and her husband, Larry, are Dealer # 188, located at B-1-left (Aisle B, space #1, on the left side). Diane Schoenborn Kelly '73 and her husband, Mike Kelly '73, are Dealer # 678, located at M-4-left. As dealers, they work on the sales floor 2 dealer-days per month per space, although Diane "banks" days during the summer due to her school-year committments (look for her and her daughter to be at Antique Plaza during most weekdays in July)." ANN LANDERS Harry Karnofsky 64 pointed out this piece by Ann Landers regarding reunion etiquette. DEAR ANN LANDERS: I recently attended my 25th high school class reunion. I had a wonderful time, but I noticed a few people seemed uncomfortable, and their discomfort made others uncomfortable as well. I have compiled a list of DOs and DON'Ts for such events. With reunion time just around the corner, I hope you will print my "Reunion Rules" for others who may be feeling awkward about attending the festivities: 1. No whining or moaning over what "might have been," or anything else depressing. No one wants a pall cast over this happy event. 2. Seek out people who have made a difference in your life, and thank them. They will appreciate it. 3. Check your midlife crisis at the door. No one needs to know you are having an affair or that your spouse just left you. 4. Do not brush off anyone who wants to talk to you. It doesn't matter whether or not you liked that person in high school. We have all changed. 5. Bring an extra hankie, and cry all you want when you are overwhelmed by nostalgia and old friends. Tears can be a great catharsis. 6. All responses to questions should be at least two full sentences. Don't be abrupt. It will make you appear snobbish. 7. Don't do too much bragging. It puts a spotlight on your insecurities. The best compliments are the ones you get without fishing. 8. Any remarks about your baldness, weight or wrinkles should be countered with something humorous or self-deprecating. No offense is intended. Sometimes, when people are surprised at the change in the appearance of an old friend, they don't know how to deal with it, so they try to mask their surprise with humor. 9. Be careful how you approach others. Be respectful. Remember that you are dealing with someone's wife, husband, mother or father. 10. Be yourself. We remember you from way back, and will accept you the way you are. -- See You in St. Louis DEAR ST. LOUIS: The high school reunion guidelines you have set forth also can be applied to weddings and other social events where friends of long-standing get together. They are sensible and sure to diminish tension and ease the tight spots. Thanks for sending them on. PICTURES Several of the classes have been sharing family pictures by sending them to their class mailing list. If you have a current picture of you and/or your family, please share it by mailing it to your class mailing list. And if you like, send it to me and I'll create a photo page under your class homepage. Just be sure that your image is not too big so it doesn't clog up your classmates' mailboxes. I recommend jpeg images at 100dpi so the images are a reasonable size. Personally, with Shaq fouled out, I would have gone for two and the tie and taken my chances in another OT, but what do I know. So instead of tying the series 2-2, the Pacers are down 3-1. Reggie Miller and Rik Smits had huge games and the Pacers still couldn't beat the Lakers due to heroics from Shaq and Kobe Bryant.
