This week I received RSVPs for the Homecoming 2000 party from former Encina staff members Laverne Gonzales, Vince Marelich, Tom Wilde and Rees Lee! HOMECOMING 2000 Date: Friday, October 20, 2000 Location: 707 Commons Dr, Sacramento, CA 95825 (corner of Commons and Campus Commons) Time: 5pm to 2am (game from 7-10pm at El Camino HS) The building has a lobby area, outdoor terraces and lawns to get out of crowds, bathrooms and a small kitchen, plus conference rooms and offices where we could set up tables for the potluck. The building is located in a nice wooded area. It can accomodate around 100 people indoors, with lots of room to overflow outside onto the terrace and lawn. There's lots of parking, we can stay late, alcohol is okay, there's a lawn for kids to run around, it's about 10 minutes from El Camino HS where the game will be played, we can control the sound, it's private, FREE, did I mention it's FREE, and we can set up tables for the potluck for those who wish to participate. Thanks again to Kathleen O'Neill Cabe 79 for hosting the homecoming party. Her husband's law offices are located on the first floor. HOMECOMING RSVPS We have over 120 RSVPs from Encina alumni and staff, not counting guests or family! The class of 1973 has 13 RSVPs, edging out the class of 1985 with 9, and the classes of 77, 78, 86 and 90 with 6 rsvps a piece. But the group with the most RSVPs is actually the Encina staff, with a total of 14 this week! We heard from the class of 68 and 69 this week, so all the classes are represented, except for 66, 67, 92, 93, and 95-99. I spoke with teacher Laverne Gonzales this week. When he heard that he could ride in the homecoming parade at halftime with Christine Kojima, he said to sign him up! I have Mr Gonzales' email address. Teacher Rees Lee is planning to come, although he said he would pass on riding in the homecoming parade . I have Mr Lee's email address. Teacher Vince Marelich is planning to attend and asked why no one told him about last year's party since he's listed in the phonebook. Vince is in contact with other Encina staff and will be attending teacher Eleanor Brown's retirement party tonight. I asked Vince to spread the word among any Encina staff he runs into. Mr Marelich also has email. Finally, teacher Tom Wilde is looking forward to attending the homecoming party. Mr Wilde has email. I won't be able to attend but know that I will be there in spirit tho my physical self will remain here in real Apache country. I'm glad to see names of friends from '71-'75 on the RSVP list as well as some favorite teachers. (An aside to this, Mr. Derderian was my driver ed teacher at Encina and my daughter's at El Camino. Coach Miles was one of my son's teachers at EC.My kids also attended summer school at Encina so while not exactly a two-generation Encina family, we're close). So-back to the subject-I'd love to be there but...maybe next year if it's held. All you alums who knew me when, feel free to "reunion" with me via e-mail or call or write, just check the '72 directory! Have fun! MOVIES Here's an interesting idea if it works: MovieTickets.com launches for Memorial Day MovieTickets.com on Thursday began offering online ticket purchasing at 5,500 movie theaters in the U.S. and Canada. The company's owners include Hollywood.com Inc.(HOLL: news, msgs), and theater chains AMC Entertainment (AEN: news, msgs), National Amusements and Canada's Famous Players. Users can purchase tickets using a credit card and pick them up at the theater's "Will Call" window. There is no charge for the service, although a company spokesperson indicated a fee may be added after six months. Coincidentally, America Online's (AOL: news, msgs) Moviefone service said it was relaunching its Web site and dropping transaction charges for online purchases. ""We've always been more a marketing tool for the studios. Ticket fees were never a meaningful source of revenue," Andrew Jarecki, CEO of AOL Moviefone told the Hollywood Reporter. The MovieTickets.com site also offers movie reviews, trailers, entertainment news, coverage of movie premieres and data on current movies. Listen to an interview with Mitchell Rubenstein, chairman and CEO of Hollywood.com. STORE eToys is offering $10 off purchases of $50 or more. When you check out, enter the coupon code C9930 on the checkout form. This offer expires 6/30/00 and is limited to one use per customer. Please link to eToys via the Encina store if you make use of this coupon. It is not a good idea to transport almost 600 people on a holiday. One of our flights was cancelled and over 100 people spent 7-8 hours at San Jose airport. Their flight didn't leave until 430pm and our ship's departure had to be delayed until they arrived. This was just a short cruise from LA to Ensenada, Mexico. Our ship, the Viking Serenade, is the smallest in the Royal Caribbean fleet, holding 1600-1800 passengers and 650 crew. Their newest ship, the Voyager, is the largest passenger ship and holds 5000 passengers, with a basketball court and ice rink! Never having cruised before, this was a new experience for my family and my two boys had fun, spending their days in the organized children's activities. We all ate a lot and spent a lot of time relaxing and socializing. Service was great and it's nice to be pampered. A pretty relaxing trip except for the time spent in airports. It's a brutal life to work on a cruise ship. Our dining room attendant works 6 months on and 6 weeks off so he rarely sees his family in India. He works from 6am to almost midnight with an hour off in the afternoon and two lunches off a week. The ship does back to back 3 and 4 day cruises so they get no days off during the week. Most of the crew are from third world countries and the ship pays well compared to what they could get at home. Next time you're on a cruise, leave a nice tip. They deserve it... Have a good weekend!
