In the process of upgrading my systems to newest version of Internet Explorer and Outlook Express (version 5.01), supposedly because this version is more stable, my address book with all my Encina contacts got trashed. Fortunately, the Encina Update mailing list is distributed via egroups and was not affected. If you changed your email address in the past six months or so, please send me your new email address. New alumni and addresses should be okay. It's just the changes that appear to have gotten lost. I love computers! Congratulations to Donna Ting 94, who was the 800th Encina alumni on the Encina Update mailing list. Be sure to watch Encina's Lou DeCosta 66 on TV tonight. Not only did he write this episode of "The Love Chronicles", but he appears on tonight's show at 10pm on the A&E channel! More details later in the Update for those who are interested. SHARKS Congratulations to the San Jose Sharks, who defeated the St Louis Blues on Tuesday night in game seven, advancing to the next round against the Dallas Stars! The Blues were the first seed and had the league's best record, while the Sharks were the 14th seed in the playoffs. The Sharks led the series 3-1 but the Blues fought back to even it 3-3, blowing the Sharks out 6-2 on Easter Sunday. Things looked grim, but the Sharks dominated the Blues Tuesday night with gritty defense and outstanding goaltending. HOMECOMING 2000 Date: October 20, 2000 Place: TBD I believe we have located a new location for the Homecoming party this year. Just awaiting confirmation. Jill Hood 84 wrote that Emily Marchant 85 might be in contact with Melinda. I contacted Emily Marchant through her listing on the alumni.net website and she passed the word to Melinda. Melinda wrote that Michele Graves planned the 5 year reunion and she planned the 10 year reunion. Melinda would be happy to help but does not want to chair the 15 year reunion. Melinda has the mailing list used for the 10 year reunion. Pam Sparks is also willing to help but not chair. Some of you expressed interest on the 85 mailing list in having some sort of informal get together. Having an informal reunion and making use of the Encina website and mailing list, you may be able to greatly reduce the amount of work and expense. If you are still interested in having a 15 year reunion, please write the class mailing list at encina1985@egroups.com and get things going before it's too late. Now that you have the mailing list you can reach lots of your classmates in a mailing and get them on the mailing list and into the class directory. 1990 REUNION If you are interested in helping or attending the 10 year reunion this year please contact Denyce at tiniegrrl@Aol.com 1995 REUNION Do we have anyone from the reunion committee on the mailing list? Ben wrote: "He grew up three houses down the street from me. Both of our families are LDS (Mormon). He was young enough that I remember when he was born, and I usually just thought of him Steve's little brother. When he was old enough, long after I left Sacramento, he tended my mother's yard and took care of her yard equipment. John married Mary Margaret Smith, one of Denisa's younger sisters. They have 5 kids, ages 1 to 10. John, his wife and two oldest daughters had gone to the Fresno LDS Temple dedication ceremony. Then the four of them went to Disney Land. They were returning from there when there was a one car accident. John was driving. There is some speculation that he dozed off, or had a moment of inattention, drifted, overcorrected, and rolled the vehicle 3 times. Although he was belted in, enough of his body was out the side window that he was crushed and died instantly. His wife found him. The funeral was Wednesday in Elk Grove. Mom says that the families seemed to accept that it was John's time to go. There were many happy and warm memories of his life shared at the funeral. She said that 60 employees of Walgreen's were in attendance. John's mother, Ruth, is one of my mom's dearest and oldest friends, so mom was one of the people that Ruth called. Mom called me on Saturday. Mom calls me a several times a year to report the deaths of friends, but usually they are the adults that I knew as a child. Mom attended three funerals this week. Mom and Ruth used to always think it was cute that John Adams and Ben Franklin lived on the same block... " Diane Schoenborn Kelly 73 tracked down this bio for me. John's wife Mary Margaret was the younger sister of Denisa Smith 73. We are not sure whether Mary Margaret attended Encina or not, as her parents moved to Wilton in the early 1980s. "John Scott Adams in Stockton, accidently, April 12, 2000. Loving husband of Mary-Margaret Adams of Stockton. They had 5 children. A resident of Stockton 8 years, John graduated from C.S.U.S. in 1991, majoring in Business Administration and Accounting. He was store manager for Walgreen's for 5 years. He attained the level of Eagle Scout in 1982 and loved to play the saxophone and clarinet. He served a mission for his church in Sydney, Australia, from 1985 until 1986 and is described by his older daughter as enthusiastic, bubbly, bouncy, and determined. A native of Sacramento, aged 34 years. Funeral Wednesday, April 19 at 2:00 P.M. in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 8697 Elk Grove Blvd. in Elk Grove. Interment Thursday in Fair Oaks District Cemetery will be private." John was survived by: Carley Adams Saxton ?? (write if you know what year Carley was) Karen Adams Macera ?? MCKINLEY Paul Hamby 74 writes that he plans to climb Mt McKinley in June and will try and get a summit photo with the class of 74 banner! After reading "Into Thin Air" and seeing the Imax Everest film, I think I prefer to remain at sea level. Good luck Paul! EBS Whit Poindexter 76 wrote: Hey Alumni! I remember the EBS. We started it around 74 or 75. Auble, Miller, Poindexter, McCurdy, and a few others went out and did video on things. We made the movie "The Blob", did the end of the year sports film and ran many an errand for Pancho Gonzales. We really had a blast but then we were changed to a weekly news format.I don't remember the underground dirt or what ever it was called..Later, Poin LOU DECOSTA 66 Lou DeCosta 66 wrote: "Love Chronicles" has moved to a new night. Thursday night's at 10 p.m. on A & E. It's repeated at some ungodly hour later that night, then again on Saturdays at 7 p.m. Next week's (April 27) is "Love in the 60's" (actually, I think the network has changed the title to "A Groovy Kind of Love" -- shudder). It's another one that I wrote and, this time, actually appear in, reminiscing about Berkeley in the 60's much the way my grandfather used to reminisce about the Depression ("I had to walk two miles through the snow -- barefoot! -- just to get a tab of acid." Well, not quite that bad). Hope you can catch it. Here's Lou's press release: "Lou DeCosta, Inc.™, a leisure-time subsidiary of Pulmonary Psychotic Plastics (an offshore subsidiary of Mormons For Mohammed), is pleased to announce the airing of “Love Chronicles: A Groovy Kind of Love,” Mr. DeCosta’s pathetic attempt to glorify the 60’s generation’s inglorious past. Mr. DeCosta, Story Editor of “Love Chronicles,” not only wrote the show but also appears in it as an interview subject in a fawning attempt to justify his misspent youth. “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times,” Mr. DeCosta suggested plagiaristically in a meandering pre-show press conference, whose aimlessness seemed to illustrate the clinical short-term memory loss typical of, of… Mr. DeCosta, who once aspired to the throne of Tonga, is a well-known hack writer whose credits include “When News Anchors Attack,” “The World’s Most Dangerous Wheelchair Chases,” “A History Of Dirt,” and the Emmy Award near-miss “Moose On The Loose: The Untold Bullwinkle Scandals.” Through a rather undistinguished career, Mr. DeCosta has won a number of not particularly prestigious awards, including, most-famously, the Gold Star For Spelling Award in Miss Wible’s first grade class at Cottage School (an award since discontinued after it was revealed years later that Mr. DeCosta utilized a crib sheet scribbled on the inside of his eyelids). Mr. DeCosta claims the 60’s were not at all as carefree as popular culture holds, and likens his experience to that of his father’s tales of the Great Depression. “I sometimes had to walk two or three miles through the snow, barefoot,” he claims, “just to get a tab of acid.” “A Groovy Kind Of Love” airs on A & E Thursday, April 27, at 10 PM and is repeated Saturday, April 29, at 7 PM. Mr. DeCosta requests that rather than floral displays, contributions be made to the You’re On My List Foundation (a tax shelter subsidiary of Lou DeCosta, Inc.™), a charitable endowment for obsessive-compulsive revenge seekers." KEVIN ANDERSON 82 I thought I would share this bio from Kevin Anderson 82, who teaches with Christine Kojima at Del Campo HS. Our second child is a boy, Kellen Patrick, arriving Aug. 25, 00. Love her death but I now know what my parents and teachers had to deal with when I was young. It's true that "what comes around goes around." Maddie is definitely getting me back (and rightfully so). Memorable_teachers: Dan Ash, Joe Lawrence(currently at Rio), Laverne Gonzales (at Rio), Andy Braio, Barbara Bunner Favorite_memory: Camping on senior lawn our last night, Sweetheart Swing 1982, sneaking into the gym on saturday nights to play slaughterball at midnight, Johnny Reitter's slaughterball headshot on Chris Tribble, PE with Susan Darkenwald, EBS. Story: I have the great pleasure of teaching side by side with Christine Kojima at Del Campo. I only wish I had taken her class at Encina. She really does an excellent job and every kid loves her death. Gail Pierce(english/yearbook)is our principal and she is an outstanding boss and administrator PAMELA PRYOR 69 Pamela is another accomplished Encina alumni. Occupation: self employed artist, organic farmer Bio: I graduated from UC Irvine with a double BA (art and Psychology) in 1973. It was here I met my husband, in the UC ceramic lab. I spent one year working on a double masters(also art/psychology), but halfway into it decided I could not handle one more day of school nor one more day of southern California. I spent the next 8 months traveling through the Rockies with the goal of skiing every ski mountain in Colorado, Wyoming and Idaho. Having done this, I applied to the Peace Corps, but was not accepted for lack of any practical skills to offer. Then I applied to work (volunteer) for Greenpeace in Seattle, hoping for a place on one of the boats. At that time they did not allow women on the boats. So I moved to Davis and aquired a degree in Veterinary nursing, and became a mother. My son's father remained in So. Cal to finish his graduate degree, so I raised my son as a single parent his first 5 years. I moved to Santa Cruz in 1978 to live and study Midwifery at a femine arts school here. Soon afterI began apprenticing, I became the mother of my second child, Kona, in 1980. Bing, the father of all 6 of my children and my husband of 20 years, moved to Santa Cruz before her birth. We bought our first home and set up our own art studio. We have been making our living at painting, sculpture, and ceramics ever sense. We bought a 75 acre ranch in the Santa Cruz mountains in 1984. My son and I have just completed planting 500 new apple trees to replenish the orchards already existing. I also have about 100 specialty trees to supply local organic markets. I spent some time in the 80's raising Arabian horses and my daughter is still an avid horsewoman. At the age of 12 she trained her own Arabian, and used this horse in endurance rides as well as horse shows. I was a cub scout den leader in the early 80's, a 4-h dairy goat project leader for 7 years, an art teacher at the local elementary school, on the school board and a soccer mom for many years. Trivia: I think I covered a lot of trivia in previos statement. Some of our famous clients are, Jesse Jackson, Bill Walsh, Merve Griffon, Sen. Frank Cooper, and the Queen of Arabia. Hobbies: My whole family and I are into water sports and skiing, travel and mountain biking. We spend one month every December in southern or central Mexico surfing and skin diving and canoeing. We have canoed the everglades extensively, and camped and traveled to every state several times. Horses and gardening and building houses. Replanting the forest (my husband and I have planted 9,000 redwood trees on our property) My six kids and one grandchild keep me so busy with their hobbies, I have little time for my own. But I have fun with them. Kids: Caleb born in 1975, attended UCSC on a full academic scholarship,is now a writer and organic farmer with one son, Jimi. Kona, born 1980, is now a sophmore at UC Berkely, also on an academic scholorship, and made High Honors her first year. She leaves for Ghana, Africa this summer for a full years study abroad at the University of Ghana. She hopes to become a photo journalist, she is currently a religious studies/English major with a focus on how religions have, and do, affect womens position and treatment in their cultures. She is the girl who grew up on the back of a horse, who would ride bareback through the mountains, sometimes up to 50 miles in a day, bareback, chasing wild boar, coyote, fox and even cougars. She was and still is a wild woman. Kyla was born in 1982, is graduating from high school this year(2000) and has at this date not decided between the Academy of Art in San Francisco, Otis Art institute or Cal State Long Beach Art Dept. She is beautiful and talented and the complete opposite of her wild sister. Forrest, born 1985, is an athlete. He plays high school water polo, High school soccer, high school swim team, surfs almost every day, and was chosen for the olympic developement team for northern california(soccer). He plays class one soccer for Santa Cruz County and thinks he might like to pursue a career as a forester. Jade, born 1989, is currently being homeschooled by me and we love it. I will keep her in home school at least until junior high. Rousseau, born 1994 is close friends with his nephew, my grandson,Jimi, who was born in 1997. The last 5 children were born at home. Memorable_teachers: Joe Pattituci was a positive and encouraging art teacher, Gary Pruner and Mr. Foster were independent characters who were memorable, but not for being good teachers. Mr. Coke was everybodies pal, I adored him. Mr. Tracey and his teaching partner Mr. Lee? were great! I still use them as examples of great team teaching in our district. Mr. Huber was the worst teacher of my entire school career and is the inspiration for all the work I have put on hiring committees and school boards here to protect our kids from this kind of person. Favorite_memory: Many great memories from Encina: first love, Tom Morrissey, second love Jerry Glazebrook. Wonderful freindships and adventures . Camping trip with Linda Shepherd, Chris Harrold, and Jerry. Santa Cruz Beach trips with Holly, Faye, Judy and dances, pies in the face at lunch and cutting school to go skiing.
