Please forward this newsletter to your siblings and classmates and encourage them to check out the Encina website. GROUPS egroups.com, who host the Encina mailing lists, merged with onelist.com a while back. This past Sunday they combined their websites and are still recovering from the aftermath of such a major change. We lost the encina1962 mailing list and I'm unable to add members to the encinaupdate or encinahomecoming mailing lists at this time. I've had to create temporary lists to hold the new members for now. I've sent mail to egroups but they must be swapped trying to recover and haven't gotten back to me yet. HOMECOMNG 2000 Principal Myrtle Berry informed me last week that the date of the Homecoming game has changed again due to scheduling conflicts. The NEW DATE is Friday, October 20, vs San Juan, at El Camino HS. As much as I enjoyed the Homecoming 99 party last year at the Candlerock Lounge, I thought the bar area was noisy and crowded. Ever the optimist, I'm hoping for an even bigger turnout for this year's homecoming party and I thought it would be more conducive to mingling and mixing with other Encina alumni if we had a private room to ourselves where we could control the music and lighting. Now that we have a firm date for the Homecoming party, I asked Lorna Cline Gragg 72/73 to reserve a private room for the alumni party at Country Club Lanes. Unfortunately, there are no more private rooms available available for Friday, October 20th at Country Club Lanes. The downside of having a private, reserved room, is that it costs money. I'm going to pay the room cost from the commissions the Encina website has received from the Encina store. I'm not sure whether we'll have a cover charge at this time, but we'll certainly accept contributions from those who attend. Lorna has proposed that we have a potluck again this year, since last year this worked out well. This may depend on the location as not everyone will let you bring in food. So we could really use some help from our Sacramento alumni in locating and reserving a suitable location for the homecoming alumni party on October 20th. Many thanks to those of you who have already written with suggestions. Lorna Cline Gragg 72/73 has been checking on locations which have been suggested and I recently recruited Ridgely Sheldon 68 to help. What we are looking for is: 1. available Friday October 20, 2000 from 5pm to at least midnight. Pregame party from 5 to 7. Post game party after the game. Last year some folks never made it to the game! 2. private room large enough to accomodate at least 100 people, although I'm hoping we have 200 or more. It's hard to predict this far in advance. 3. reasonably close to El Camino High School where the homecoming game will be played. I think within 10 minutes driving is okay... 4. ability to set up no host bar for those so inclined 5. ability to bring in food for potluck if possible. 6. cost in the $200-300 range. Country Club was expected to be $250. Most of the criteria are the same as those for a normal class reunion, or maybe for the Friday night alumni only gatherings some reunions have. If you have any suggestions or contacts, please write ASAP. Some of you alumni must have connections with hotels or country clubs or restaurants. We could even use the backyard of a private home... If you could call and see if your suggestion is available before responding that would be great and save us some time. I had even thought of having the pre-game and post-game party at El Camino HS or Encina HS but there's no alcohol allowed and schools require you to provide a bond or insurance or something of that sort. Recent Homecoming 2000 RSVPs: Linda Weatherford Ballance 62 Lucia Churches 73 Michelle Hood 78 Viki Clift Beck 85 I'm surprised not to have heard from some of last year's crowd? Where are you guys? Please RSVP if you think you will be attending the homecoming alumni party this fall: http://www.encinahighschool.com/homecoming/homecoming_form.htm It would be helpful to get a reasonable headcount. I'll keep the RSVP list on the Homecoming 2000 page up to date so you can check and see who's going: http://www.encinahighschool.com/homecoming/homecoming2000.htm I look forward to seeing you at the Homecoming 2000 party this fall! CLOTHING The Encina clothing store is open again. Lorna Cline 72/73 is still taking care of the Encina clothing. Rather than charging sales tax separately, the prices have been revised to include sales tax. In the interests of full disclosure, the Encina website makes a small profit on clothing sales. Check out the alumni clothing: http://www.encinahighschool.com/homecoming/clothing_form.htm At this time we only have Encina Apache designs. This covers alumni up to 1990. Sorry Bulldogs. We could probably add Bulldog clothes if we could find someone to take responsibility... REUNIONS We have a lot of new alumni on the mailing list this week. Even if you don't have a reunion this year, please check and notify your siblings if their class is having a reunion! 1963 REUNION Contact Bonnie McFarland Kaplan at BJKAPL@AOL.COM if you are interested in helping or attending the next 63 reunion. 1965 REUNION Joyce Rogers Brand 65 called me last week and gave me details about their 35 year reunion. We had a very nice talk! Date: August 19, 2000 Place: Unitarian Church 2425 Sierra Blvd (between Howe and Fulton) Sacramento, CA Joyce said this reunion will be casual, probably a barbeque. The church has a nice stage and Timothy Schmit, Tom Phillips, George Hullin and Ron Floegel will probably provide musical entertainment. Those of you who have been receiving the update for a while may remember that Tom Phillips 65 is married to Jan Arai, my wife's cousin. Joyce Rogers has promised to invite me and my wife to their reunion this year. Sounds like fun! Then Chuck Long 65 sent me this update: "Just to update you and the class boomers regarding our 35 year reunion of Encina High School class of 65, we are schedule for Saturday, August 19, 2000, from about 5:00 PM to Midnight (I will confirm the exact times with the planning committee members at our next meeting this Thursday evening). The reunion will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Society, 2425 Sierra Blvd., 916-483-9283. Even though we have the facility until midnight, they want to see some genuine actions that indicate we are going home by 11:30 PM. For those who wanted other dates, we apologize, however we had to go with a date when both a facility and a band could be booked for the same night. The band? Oh yeah. This year we will enjoy the dulcet tones of Tim, Tom, Ron, and George. You remember, those old time Contender and New Breed Boys. It was tough to accommodate all these guys' schedules, as you know how you have to suck up to these guys to even get them to sign an autograph for you. We will have blocks of rooms reserved for the out-of-towners, and will have maps to the facility. We still are researching the food options, but I should be able to announce more information on the next update, including a price approximation. So be sure to mark your calendars and tell your classmates. I'll be looking out for you..." 1970 REUNION If you are interested in attending or helping with the 30 year reunion, please contact Pamela Deason Thomas at egishome@aol.com 1975 REUNION Where: Sutter Club When: Saturday, July 15, 2000 Contact Jenny Bender Bittner at jedb@pacbell.net 1980 REUNION Where: The Firehouse When: October 14, 2000 The reunion committee met on March 28 and Richard Stoffel sent out a long message to the class mailing list covering the agenda in detail. If you are not on the class mailing list and would like to be, let me know. The next reunion committee meeting will be on April 11th. 1981 REUNION The next reunion committee meeting is Tuesday, May 9th at Laura Storm's house. Contact Melissa Tovar at Melissatovar@aol.com 1985 REUNION We may have a lead on Melinda Cope 85. I'm trying to reach Melinda through Robin Hagy 85 via her brother Don Hagy 76. Keep your fingers crossed. 1990 REUNION If you are interested in helping or attending the 10 year reunion this year please contact Denyce at tiniegrrl@Aol.com 1995 REUNION Do we have anyone from the reunion committee on the mailing list? Please write encina1995@egroups.com if you're interesting in attending and/or helping to organize the 5 year reunion. Dan Christiansen 90 EBS Mark Oldfield 78 wrote: The EBS memoir in the recent update brought back some fond memories. In 1978, a few classmates and I -- Dan Will and Paul Knepprath come to mind, although I'm no doubt leaving out some important people -- picked up where the EBS founders left off. We put together some irreverent and flat-out fun broadcasts that I still look back on with pride. I distinctly remember Principal Bassett pulling me aside one day and saying, "Don't turn this into Saturday Night Live." That's when I knew we were hitting the mark. It would not have been possible without Laverne Gonzales, of course, but the person I most appreciated was Kirt Shearer, class of 1980, who must have been a kick-butt AV monitor in grade school because he knew how to work every piece of video equipment in the studio. Funny guy, too. Irreverent. I liked that about him. You out there, Kirt? I found it interesting that the recent memoir of EBS said it brought about the demise of the Tomahawk newspaper. I missed the earlier discussion on this, and I'm not sure where one paper ended and the other began, but in 1978 we still had the EncinAsylum. Aside from having a better name than the Tomahawk (oooh, class warfare!), it also was a good read. Maybe that's because I was never on staff... Susan Hobson 84 wrote: I may be wrong, but I seem to remember the newspaper and EBS coexisting for a period of time in the 80's. I remember EBS being around my freshman year in 1980 and I know we also had the paper. In my junior or senior year we also had an underground paper that was hilarious. I think Laura Pelfanio might be someone to contact about the underground paper--she may even have copies somewhere. It would be wonderful to see those again. I remember it causing a huge uproar in the school. The group responsible would raid the school in the middle of the night to leave the papers taped to lockers. There would be some wonderful gossip and some very healthy criticism of the staff. I still see Laverne Gonzales about once every couple months. He comes into my husband's business which is a rental darkroom. Another memory that the your update brought back to me is an incident with the camera equipment. I think it was my senior year when several students were caught taping a porn. At least one of the students was expelled, or at least asked to leave. Anyway, thank you for the updates and for all your hard work. I am now in contact weekly with four of my closest friends from high school. I never would have had that opportunity if you hadn't put so much effort into this.
