Thursday, January 06, 2000 12:32 PM Encina Update (homecoming/egroups/reunions/alumni reunion/siblings/booster club/basketball/store/whats new) ENCINA ALUMNI, Happy New Year everyone! HOMECOMING 2000 Several folks pointed out that August 29th was a very unlikely date for homecoming, since school has just started and it's not even a Friday or Saturday. I blame this on the Y2K transition. Myrtle wrote me 9/29/00 or 9/30/00 and I mentally converted this to August because the 00's distracted me! Homecoming 2000 will be September 29 (Friday) or 30 (Saturday). The date has not been set yet. Myrtle Berry will let me know when it's finalized. REUNIONS So far only the classes of 75 and 80 have made any noises about a reunion this year. What about the classes of 65, 70, 85, 90 and 95? Don't wait too long to get organized. The clock is ticking. If you are interested in helping on your reunion committee, let me know or send an email to your class mailing list and get things rolling. Just send an email to encinaxxxx@egroups.com, where xxxx is your class year. This will reach everyone on your class mailing list. The class of 80 has been making good use of the class mailing list. ALUMNI REUNION Speaking of reunions, Lorna Cline Gragg 72/73 and Lucia Churches 73 of the illustrious class of 73, were so enthused by the Homecoming 99 alumni party back in October, that they propose another alumni reunion to celebrate the new millenium. Sounds like any excuse for a party to me... The proposed date is Saturday, February 26th at Country Club Lanes. Lorna has already reserved the "Hickory Room", which is a banquet room on the first floor by the "east" door to the bowling alley. Lorna has it reserved from noon until 2am. Unlike the free homecoming party which was held in the common area, the banquet room required a $250 deposit. Spread among the same number of alumni we had at the homecoming party, this would run to a cover charge of maybe $2/person. We will likely do the same sort of thing for the Homecoming 2000 party in September, so that we will have a private room to ourselves. It got quite crowded in the bar area last year. So if you enjoyed the homecoming 99 party. Or if you missed it and don't want to wait until the Homecoming 2000 party in September, please make your feelings known. Rather than writing me or Lorna or Lucia, I suggest we use the Homecoming mailing list to discuss this alumni party, since the subscribers are those folks who have expressed interest in the homecoming alumni party and this is very much the same type of thing. Also, this will allow folks to easily share their thoughts about the proposed alumni reunion party with others who are interested. If you are interested, please send an email to encinahomecoming@egroups.com so Lorna and Lucia can see if there is enough interest to pull this off. What they need to know is: 1. Will you be there? 2. Will you contribute a nominal amount to cover the room deposit? Along with any other thoughts or suggestions you might have. Not everyone is on the homecoming mailing list. So if you are interested in getting together a group from your class, use your class mailing list to spread the word among your classmates. EGROUPS egroups sent me this message regarding "registration versus subscribing". Since I've added most of you manually to the mailing lists for the Encina Update, Homecoming or your class, it is very likely you are not registered at egroups. This is okay. You are not required to register. However, you need to register to use some of the egroup features. "Registration versus Subscription: Educating Your Members on the Difference Did you know that your group members need to be officially registered with the eGroups service to be able to access our features? For example, if any of your group members are subscribed to your group, but are not registered with eGroups, they will not be able to access the many valuable features such as the vault, calendar, chat room, and database. As you know, these features enhance and enrich the group communications experience, so we want to make sure all of your members have full access to them. You may want to send a message to your group(s) asking members if they have registered at the eGroups site. They might think that because they are subscribed to your group, they are also automatically registered with eGroups. You'll want to clarify that these two processes are separate - they can be subscribed to a group without being registered at eGroups. For those members who are not registered, just let them know that they can quickly and easily register at www.egroups.com. They will need to enter their email addresses and choose a password. This will enable them to utilize the many useful features at eGroups. IN SUMMARY: 1) Registration at eGroups and subscription to a group are two different things. 2) Your members must be officially registered at eGroups to have access to features and benefits. 3) When your members register at eGroups they will have acces to features such as the calendar, the vault for file sharing and much more located at the web site. 4) Check with your members today to find out if they have officially registered at eGroups and let them know the benefits they gain when they do register!"
